ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — An outbreak of a rare type of Ebola virus has plagued Congo and Uganda, as cases outpace the response.

The World Health Organization said on May 29 authorities have reported 134 confirmed cases in Congo, including 17 confirmed deaths. Neighboring Uganda has confirmed nine cases and one death, the Ugandan ministry of health said.

WHO has declared the Ebola disease outbreak in Congo and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern.

Health authorities say the outbreak is caused by Bundibugyo virus, a rare type of Ebola that has no approved medicines or vaccines. The outbreak is occurring in a part of Congo facing conflict caused by armed rebel groups and the displacement of large numbers of people fleeing the violence.

“This is a context that is incredibly complicated to try to manage,” said Lina Moses, an epidemiologist and disease ecologist at Tulane University who worked as a first responder coordinating contact tracing during the 2014 West Africa Ebola outbreak.

Despite new aid arrivals, medical personnel continue to struggle with a lack of equipment and a distrustful population.

Here’s what to know:

How Ebola can spread

Ebola disease is highly contagious and can be transmitted to people from wild animals. It spreads in the human population through contact with bodily fluids such as vomit, blood or semen, and with contaminated surfaces and materials such as bedding and clothing.

The disease is rare but severe and often fatal in people. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain and at times internal and external bleeding.

The first Ebola virus to be identified was in 1976 near the Ebola River in what is now Congo. The first outbreaks occurred in remote villages in Central Africa, near tropical rainforests.

What the WHO’s emergency declaration means

The WHO says the latest Ebola outbreak does not meet the criteria for a pandemic emergency, such as COVID-19, and advises against closing international borders.

Its emergency declaration is meant to spur donors into action. However, the global response to previous declarations has been mixed.

When the WHO declared mpox outbreaks in Congo and elsewhere in Africa as a global emergency in 2024, experts at the time said it did little to get supplies like diagnostic tests, medicines and vaccines to affected countries quickly.

An array of aid agencies are trying to help. WHO representatives in Congo said organizations on the ground included UNICEF, the International Organization for Migration, Médecins Sans Frontières, the World Food Program and the Red Cross.

Where the outbreak started

The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the first cases were reported in late April in Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, and the nearby Mongbwalu health zone, a high-traffic mining area. However, officials say they are not certain of the source and the outbreak may have started weeks earlier and gone unnoticed.

Ituri is in remote eastern Congo, with poor road networks and health facilities, and is more than 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) from the capital, Kinshasa.

Attacks in Ituri by the Allied Democratic Force, a rebel group allied with the Islamic State group, and a coalition of ethnic militias have also hindered the response.

The illness also has been reported in the Congolese provinces of North Kivu and South Kivu, south of Ituri, where the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group controls many key cities, including Goma and Bukavu. The rebels have reported two cases.

Outbreak linked to rare virus

The WHO says Ebola is caused by a group of viruses, and three kinds are known to cause large outbreaks: Ebola virus, Sudan virus and Bundibugyo virus.

The Bundibugyo type of Ebola is rare and different from the Ebola virus, sometimes known as the Zaire virus, that has been dominant in Congo's previous outbreaks.

It was first detected in Uganda’s Bundibugyo district during a 2007-2008 outbreak that killed 37 people. The second time was in 2012 in an outbreak in Isiro, Congo, where 29 deaths were reported. The current outbreak is the worst known one linked to the Bundibugyo virus.

The average fatality rate of Bundibugyo virus is around 30%-50%, Anaïs Legand, a researcher in the WHO emergencies program said on May 29.

Dr. Gabriel Nsakala, a professor of public health who has been involved in past Ebola responses in Congo, said the country has extensive experience managing Ebola outbreaks, but response efforts could be complicated by the unusual type.

The initial response was delayed because health authorities first tested for the more common Ebola virus.

International response

When the outbreak was confirmed, the Africa CDC convened an urgent high-level meeting with health authorities from Congo, Uganda and South Sudan, together with key partners including U.N. agencies.

A WHO technical advisory group is looking at candidate vaccines that could be prioritized for clinical trial, though experts caution this will take time, likely months.

Funding is also a challenge following recent aid cuts to Africa by the United States and other rich nations.

Medical aid donated by the European Union arrived in Ituri province on May 28, with more shipments expected. The U.S. announced $80 million in additional aid on the same day, bringing its total commitment to more than $112 million.

The response has not kept pace with one of the fastest-spreading outbreaks on record, Doctors Without Borders, or MSF, warned on May 30, calling for an immediate expansion of testing, faster deployment of aid workers and sustained access for medical supplies.

Dangers faced by health workers have been heightened by anger among residents over the stringent medical protocols for handling the victims’ bodies, which clash with local burial rites. Residents have launched at least three attacks against health centers.

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israeli forces are making their deepest incursion inside Lebanon since they withdrew from the country over a quarter-century ago, despite a nominal U.S.-brokered ceasefire and the first direct Israel-Lebanon talks in decades. It's a challenge in the emerging deal to extend the Iran war ceasefire as Tehran wants it to end fighting in Lebanon, too.

On Sunday, Israeli forces seized a symbolic fort in southern Lebanon, Beaufort castle, perched at over 700 meters (3,000 feet) above sea level. It offers commanding views across Lebanon and into northern Israel. The site has been a military asset for close to a millennium.

Israel says it is targeting the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group, which has a strong political presence in southern Lebanon and has launched thousands of missiles and drones at Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon and at northern Israel.

Israel has warned Lebanese civilians across the south to evacuate or risk being in the line of fire. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam on Saturday accused Israel of “implementing a policy of total destruction of cities and towns.”

Over 3,300 people including dozens of children have been killed in Lebanon since the fighting began on March 2, two days after the Iran war started. About 1 million people have been displaced. At least 25 Israeli soldiers and a defense contractor have been killed in Lebanon or northern Israel, along with two civilians in northern Israel.

Here’s what to know:

For nearly 1,000 years, a strategic military asset

Beaufort, also called Al-Shaqif, was built as a Crusader castle around the 12th century and also has been used by Saladin’s Jerusalem army, Mamluks, Ottomans, the French mandate, the Palestinian Liberation Organization and the Israeli military until 2000, when it was partially restored and opened to visitors.

On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu noted that Beaufort is “a symbol of a heroic battle for our fighters, but was also a symbol of deep division between us.”

The military's return feels like Israel is going in circles, said Orna Mizrahi, a former deputy director in the government’s National Security Council. “There’s a feeling of, ‘For what?’” she said.

The word “Beaufort” summons a sense of victory for the Israeli military that captured it in 1982, but also symbolizes the high price to defend the site before it was handed over in 2000, said Mizrahi, now a senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies.

Israel likely eventually will relinquish control of the fortress, she said, even as Defense Minister Israel Katz vows to make it part of Israel’s permanent security zone in southern Lebanon.

The military’s presence there will not solve the issue with Hezbollah, Mizrahi said: “Yes, we are damaging them in the operations, but in parallel we need to pursue a political and diplomatic solution."

Israel sees a threat to its northern communities

Israel has long considered Hezbollah a threat. The Shiite Muslim armed group emerged in 1982 in response to an Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon. Hezbollah has targeted communities in northern Israel, and joined the war in Gaza in 2023 in solidarity with the Palestinians.

Israel badly weakened Hezbollah during months of war. Fighting ended with a U.S.-brokered ceasefire in late 2024 after indirect talks, and Israeli forces withdrew except from five strategic hilltops along the border.

The new Lebanese government came to power with promises to disarm groups like Hezbollah, but the militants resisted. Israel meanwhile claimed that Hezbollah was rearming and rebuilding.

On March 2, Hezbollah again fired at Israel, prompting Israel to invade southern Lebanon. Lately, Israel has said it is trying to keep Hezbollah from hurting its forces and civilians with a new kind of fiber-optic drone that has been widely used in the war in Ukraine.

Lebanon says Israel has gone too far

The United States brokered a ceasefire that began in mid-April. Unlike the one in the Iran war, it has not held.

Hundreds of thousands of people have fled southern Lebanon as Israeli forces carried out airstrikes and ground troops pushed into the country. Many people now shelter in the capital, Beirut, where hundreds have been killed, including in an intense, minutes-long bombardment in April.

Israeli forces now control large areas in southern Lebanon and have demolished homes and historical sites. Israel is trying to “uproot Lebanon’s memory and erase the people’s history,” Lebanon’s prime minister, Salam, said Saturday.

Hezbollah has refused to accept results of talks

Historic talks between senior officials from Israel and Lebanon began in April in Washington, the first in more than three decades between the countries that have no formal diplomatic relations.

On Friday, the first direct military talks occurred in decades.

Issues to work out include an Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, deployment of Lebanese forces there and the disarming of Hezbollah, which has refused to give up weapons while Israeli forces remain in the country.

The talks will continue this week. Hezbollah is not taking part and has said it would not accept any results. The group prefers that negotiations benefit from Iran’s leverage and sees the Lebanese government as weak, a position shared by some others in the country.

Lebanon’s people have been divided over the talks, whose announcement was met with protests. Many Lebanese are angry with Hezbollah for the destruction it has caused in the country, but also wary of Israel.

Lebanon's prime minister on Saturday called the direct negotiations “currently the least costly option,” adding that they don’t mean a surrender and acknowledging they are not guaranteed to produce results.

An American popstar found herself moved to tears upon discovering that Meghan Markle had selected her iconic 1989 track Forever Your Girl for her eighth wedding anniversary with Prince Harry.

Paula Abdul, 63, revealed her emotional response while attending the American Music Awards at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Monday, May 25.

Meghan had used the song as the soundtrack to an Instagram post marking her eighth wedding anniversary with Prince Harry on May 19.

The post featured previouslyunseen photographs from the couple's 2018 nuptials, including an intimate black-and-white image captured in the cloisters of St George's Chapel, Windsor.

Speaking to People magazine, Mrs Abdul described her reaction upon seeing the Duchess's tribute.

"I pinched myself and I was like, 'This is awesome.' Well, it's like I said, you never know. Little gems and moments can come in and just bless your life," she said.

The singer, who rose to fame as an American Idol judge, admitted she was "tearful" when she spotted the post.

Mrs Abdul subsequently shared Meghan's content on her own Instagram Stories, writing: "So sweet to hear 'Forever Your Girl' over these beautiful memories. Wishing you both continued love, laughter and a very Happy Anniversary! XoP."

The former choreographer also reached out to Meghan personally following the anniversary tribute.

In a separate interview with E! News, Abdul explained: "I was in shock and I was so touched."

She emphasised her enduring gratitude for such moments throughout her career.

"I never take anything for granted with my career, I never have. And so, I'm always humbled to have little gems like that appear in my life. It's very touching," Mrs Abdul said.

The singer confirmed she had sent a direct message to the Duchess, telling the outlet: "I just texted her back, saying, 'What beautiful pictures and thank you so much for using my song.'"

Forever Your Girl originally appeared as the title track on Mrs Abdul's 1988 debut album before being released as a single the following year.

The track has experienced something of a renaissance in recent months, gaining renewed attention through TikTok and its inclusion in the film People We Meet on Vacation.

Mrs Abdul reflected on this unexpected revival, telling People: "I always say I never take anything in my career for granted, and the amount of pinch me moments and tears that come from my eyes, it still exists every day.

"And it started from the movie People We Meet on Vacation, and then everyone started doing TikToks."

Harry and Meghan's anniversary celebrations were kept more low-key this year, with the couple sharing a lemon and elderflower cake with their children, Archie, seven, and Lilibet, four, in their Montecito property.

Lucille Ball didn’t receive her engagement ring from husband Desi Arnaz until after they were married.

Just six months after meeting on the set of the musical comedy Too Many Girls in 1940, the couple eloped on Nov. 30, 1940, in Connecticut. When they said “I do,” Arnaz gave his wife a brass ring from Woolworth’s, per InStyle.

"Eloping with Desi was the most daring thing I ever did in my life. I knew I shouldn't have married him, but that was one of the biggest attractions," Ball said, according to Warren G. Harris' biography, Lucy & Desi: The Legendary Love Story of Television's Most Famous Couple.

The actress later received an upgraded piece of jewlery: a cushion-cut diamond and platinum ring. Her husband and I Love Lucy costar also gave her a second ring which she was frequently seen wearing on her left ring finger: an 40-carat, emerald-cut aquamarine stone.

Here’s everything to know about Lucille Ball’s engagement rings.

In her posthumously published 1996 memoir, Love, Lucy, Ball explained that her husband’s “business manager” purchased her wedding band at a five-and-dime store on the day of their 1940 elopement.

"Desi had planned to marry me at the office of Justice of the Peace John J.O'Brien. He had forgotten only one thing, a wedding ring," she wrote. "Desi's business manager ran into Woolworth's and bought me a brass one."

"Although Desi later gave me a platinum ring, that little discolored brass ring rested among the diamonds and emeralds in my jewel case for years," she added.

It is not clear when exactly Arnaz gave the 40-carat aquamarine to Ball, but she often wore it on her left ring finger.

Aquamarine is Arnaz's birthstone, as he was born on March 2, 1917.

Ball’s aquamarine ring, along with other pieces from her collection, were allegedly stolen from a Chicago hotel room in June 1950.

According to a newspaper story from the time, quoted in Michael Karol's Lucy A to Z: The Lucille Ball Encyclopedia, over $6,000 of jewelry (equivalent to approximately $82,000 today) was taken in the reported burglary.

A second aquamarine piece, a 62-carat pendant necklace, was taken, along with a gold chain choker and a pair of gold earrings.

"Detective Martin Barrett said the theft last night was a professional job," the report read. "Evidently a pass key was used to enter the rooms at the Ambassador East hotel, the detective said, and only light, valuable articles were taken.”

In her memoir Ball recalled: “All my jewelry was gone, including the 40-carat aquamarine engagement ring Desi had given me. Within a few minutes our bedroom was swarming with police checking and taking fingerprints.” The robbery was reportedly never solved.

Sometime after Ball and Arnaz eloped, he gifted her a cushion-cut diamond engagement ring. After the reported burglary of Ball’s hotel room in 1950, she was photographed wearing the original cushion-cut ring.

Ball was captured wearing it in 1943 and the photo caption read, “the ring chosen by herself as a Hollywood bride to be.”

For her role as Ball in the 2021 biopic Being the Ricardos, Nicole Kidman wore a similar aquamarine sparkler.

Costume designer Susan Lyall detailed to PEOPLE some of the research that went into preparing looks for Kidman and Javier Bardem, who starred opposite the actress as Arnaz.

"I read her autobiography [Love, Lucy] which is now covered with Post-its, because every time there was a mention of something that was related to her clothing or her hair, or her preference in interior design or anything like that, I would flag," Lyall explained.

She also focused on Ball and Arnaz “not just their characters, but who they were as people and as a couple and as a marriage and as professionals and business people and artists, and all of those things that makes for this very, very complex duo."

Peter Gabriel has shared another new song from his oialbum, this one called “A Hard Lesson.”

According to Gabriel, the song is the oldest of the entire project having been started back “in the late 80s or early 90s” when he was visiting Senegal, West Africa.

“I was falling in love with the music I heard there,” he said in a statement to his email subscribers. “I loved the tension created by the use of polyrhythms, particularly the threes and fours, so that was the start of this song. It’s a quirky, strange and long track but it’s a journey. It’s about trying to find a place, your place, how you fit in. I’ve enjoyed playing with old R&B and folk references as well.”

As for why Gabriel hadn’t completed the song until recently, he explained: “Sometimes things take time — most people do stuff a lot faster — but I have no problem with understanding my own process. Some things will mature and evolve spontaneously and some will just stay hidden-away in a box until their moment in the light appears.”

Like all the other oi songs Gabriel has released, “A Hard Lesson” will eventually have two mixes, a bright-side mix by Mark “Spike” Stent and a dark-side mix by Tchad Blake. Today, the bright-side is available for listening below.

The Artwork for ‘A Hard Lesson’

As with Gabriel’s otheroi songs, “A Hard Lesson” comes with its own unique artwork. This time it features still images from a film called Cuentos Patrioticos by Francis Alys.

Cuentos Patrioticos sees the filmmaker reenacting a historical moment in Mexico’s political history. Back in 1968, civil servants were forced to congregate in the main square of central Mexico City to welcome the new government, but instead they bleated like sheep to signify their protest.

“I saw this image of the pole, the man and the sheep and it leapt out at me,” Gabriel said. “In the film, Francis Alys is seen walking in that same square in Mexico City, followed by one sheep and then other sheep come and join in and they continue around in a circle. It’s quirky and strange and I love it. I think it is a very cool art film, I hope you check out more of his work.”

**Warning: This article contains spoilers for *Fast X*.**

As* The Fast Saga* speeds into its final lap, the franchise is pulling out all of its biggest tricks and most emotional moments on the way to the finish line. *Fast X* packs in a double-crossing twist, multiple cliffhangers, two huge returns, and even a death in the Toretto family.

"It's been 20 years, almost a quarter of a century with these characters, this family," director Louis Leterrier says on EW's *BINGE: The Fast Saga* podcast. "They have done so much for so many people, and also have fought so many enemies that now people are coming back after them. They are going to have to pay the heaviest price, you know, just the heftiest price. Tears are going to be shed."

The first major cost to Dominic Toretto's (Vin Diesel) crew comes in the form of an epic sacrifice. After gleeful villain Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa) swipes Little Brian (Leo Abelo Perry) right off of a moving vehicle, his brother Jakob (John Cena) turns his custom cannon car into a bomb to prevent an attack on Dom and give him a chance to rescue his son. The heroic Hail Mary sees Jakob go out in a literal blaze of glory.

Jakob's death helps complete the character's arc for Leterrier. "[I thought], what if we really leaned into this relationship with Little B and this uncle who never experienced love or hasn't experienced love in a long time?" he tells EW. "And then that comes through via his nephew and just the awkwardness that turns into love, and [there's] just that moment where he feels he really accepts the responsibility of being a part of this family."

When approaching Cena, Leterrier admits he wasn't sure at first how the actor would respond to the idea. Cena could tell. "I remember [Louis] being extremely nervous because what that signifies is something that could elicit a reaction from me," he says. "But what he failed to realize is my perspective of every opportunity is to allow me to do the best I can with this opportunity. And that's it. And his idea was the best. And I'm a big believer in best idea wins."

Still, as the newest member of the family exits, an old favorite gets to make a surprise return to the land of the living: Gisele.

Fast & Furious 6 (2013) GAL GADOT as Gisele

A decade earlier, Gisele (Gal Gadot) made her own sacrifice to save Han (Sung Kang) in 2013's *Fast & Furious 6*. Han would eventually meet his death in 2006's *The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift —* in a bit of timeline trickery that's now become central to *The Fast Saga*'s lore — only for fans to learn in *F9* that Han's death had been faked by Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell), bringing his character back into the fold. Now it seems that both halves of the franchise's most tragic love story have been alive the whole time.

Kang is excited about all the possibilities it creates for the future, including potentially showcasing more intimacy in Han and Gisele's scenes together. "What are those quiet moments when two people are missing each other? How do they change? How do you engage in conversation, and where do you find that shorthand again in a relationship? Is it distant? Is it intimate right away? Is it like becoming friends again, earning that friendship? So, there's so much."

It was important to Leterrier, though, to make sure Gisele was returning for a purpose. "There was no bringing back Gisele without knowing where we were taking her and what was going to happen in the next one and how involved was she going to be," he says. "Gal was very clear with us, which was like, 'Yeah, you know, I love it, and this is my family, but what's the plan?' So obviously we had to think hard, but luckily we had."

Fast Five

The reveal that Dante Reyes has his sights set on Dwayne Johnson's Luke Hobbs is arguably an even bigger surprise. Johnson previously said he wouldn't return for the franchise's ninth and tenth installments after reports of conflict between him and Diesel, but his mid-credits scene in *Fast X* suggests he's had a change of heart about *The Fast Saga*'s grand finale.

"It's a great kind of reflection on life and how movies can maybe be a teaching moment, give you opportunities to learn from your heroes," says Kang. "Like, oh, they squashed that. What was that about? Like, I don't even remember that. Like, what was the problem?"

Despite the return of both Gisele and Hobbs, Leterrier makes one thing clear: "Not everyone is going to come back though."

Remember, *Fast X* is still just part one of the franchise's long goodbye, and the stakes will only get higher. "At one point, this model is not going to be able to continue," says Leterrier. "And that point is very soon."
