- *People We Meet on Vacation *premiered on Netflix on Friday, Jan. 9.

- The romantic comedy centers on best friends Poppy Wright and Alex Nilsen, who make it a tradition to go on a trip together every summer.

- The film is adapted from Emily Henry's best-selling book.

It might be the middle of winter, but Netflix's *People We Meet on Vacation *brings the warmth of endless summer fun.

Based on Emily Henry's 2021 bestseller of the same name, the romantic comedy follows college best friends Poppy Wright (Emily Bader) and Alex Nilsen (Tom Blyth) as their annual summer trips carry them through years of change, mistakes, and lots of surprises. Their evolving friendship makes viewers wonder if some connections are meant to stay the same… or turn into something more.

So, are Poppy and Alex the ultimate friends-to-lovers duo, or do they keep each other in the friend zone? Here's how the movie breaks down.

What is *People We Meet on Vacation *about?

Emily Bader as Poppy and Tom Blyth as Alex in 'People We Meet on Vacation'

Poppy, a travel writer living in New York, is pretty miserable with her job and routine. One day, she gets a call from her friend David (Miles Heizer), who reminds her that his destination wedding in Barcelona is happening this weekend.

On a total whim, Poppy says she'll come (even though she's supposed to be in Greece for a work trip), mostly because it gives her an excuse to see David's brother Alex, who used to be her best friend.

Nine years earlier, Poppy and Alex met after their first year at Boston College and end up carpooling back to their hometown of Linfield, Ohio. The drive is tense, especially since they clash over everything and spend most of the trip bickering over the traffic. Things get worse when they lock themselves out of the car at a gas station and end up having to share a motel room for the night.

How the 'People We Meet on Vacation' movie differs from the book: All the key changes

'People We Meet on Vacation' stars break down Poppy's big romantic gesture: 'It's so simple'

People We Meet on Vacation. (L-R) Emily Bader as Poppy and Tom Blyth as Alex in People We Meet on Vacation

Once the fighting dies down, Poppy and Alex realize they are more alike than they thought, and that unexpected road trip turns into the start of a real friendship. From there, the two make it a tradition of taking a big trip together every summer.

Back in the present, Poppy and Alex haven't spoken in years (more on that in a bit), but she calls him anyway to test the waters about attending the wedding. When she tells him she's going, she conveniently leaves out the truth and claims her job is actually sending her to Barcelona for work.

Why did Poppy and Alex stop talking?

Tom Blyth as Alex and Emily Bader as Poppy in 'People We Meet on Vacation'

Tom Blyth as Alex and Emily Bader as Poppy in 'People We Meet on Vacation'.

In another flashback, Poppy and Alex's friendship starts to crack after a *very *uncomfortable couples trip in Tuscany, Italy, with their lovers: Poppy's boyfriend and coworker Trey (Lucien Laviscount), and Alex's on-and-off high school girlfriend Sarah (Sarah Catherine Hook).

The whole trip is already awkward, but things spiral further when Poppy panics that she might be pregnant. She tells Alex, and the two of them sneak off to get a test. It comes back negative, which is a huge relief for both of them.

Caught up in the moment, they hug, and Poppy suddenly leans in to kiss him. Alex stops her and asks her what he actually means to her. Embarrassed, Poppy retreats, insisting she's very confused and doesn't want to ruin their close friendship. Alex says that's "fine," but clearly, it's not.

Things get worse the following morning, when Poppy wakes up to find out that Alex and Sarah are engaged. When they talk about it, Poppy lashes out, accusing Alex of "settling" and giving up on his old dreams of getting a PhD and teaching in New York. Alex fires back that he is choosing stability and someone who actually wants to build a life with him.

Their conversation explodes into a full-blown argument. Alex tells Poppy she lives in a fantasy world before saying that this is probably their last vacation together. Poppy is absolutely crushed but says nothing in response.

What happened to Alex and Sarah?

Even though Alex and Sarah look perfect on the surface, it slowly becomes clear they are not meant to be. Their relationship is stuck in a cycle of breaking up and getting back together, and while they always manage to patch things up, it's barely enough to reach the point of getting engaged.

Back in the present, right before David's wedding, Poppy finds out that the cycle finally ended for good, and Alex and Sarah have split. After the rehearsal dinner, Alex comes clean and tells Poppy the truth: she's the reason the engagement didn't last, and why he and Sarah decided to go their separate ways.

Poppy later runs into Sarah at the airport, where she's now working as a flight attendant. Poppy initially hesitates but ends up apologizing to Sarah, admitting that her deep connection with Alex had gotten in the way of her relationship. Sarah says that she once believed Poppy disappearing from Alex's life would fix everything, but instead, those two silent years only made her and Alex's romance fall apart even more.

Do Alex and Poppy finally act on their feelings?

Now that they are both single, Alex and Poppy finally let themselves act on the feelings they've been harboring for years. After the rehearsal dinner, Alex asks why Poppy even came to the wedding, and she admits she missed him and wished things could go back to the way they were before that almost-kiss in Tuscany. Alex tells her they can't go back, and they part ways for the night.

Poppy heads up to her rental, and just as Alex walks away, he has a change of heart and follows her. He tells her he doesn't want things to go back to the way they were, and they finally lay it all out. The friends-turned-lovers share a long-awaited kiss in the rain and sleep together.

The wedding goes smoothly, but by the reception, the spark between them starts to fray. Alex brings up their future, and Poppy hesitates to reply. She tells him they can figure it out later and just enjoy their time together.

That's when Alex realizes that, no matter how much they love and care for each other, he and Poppy will never work because she still doesn't know what she really wants, and he can't wait for her any longer.

What happens at the end of People We Meet on Vacation?

Emily Bader as Poppy in 'People We Meet on Vacation'

After returning to life in New York, Poppy realizes that her indecisiveness cost her the love of her life. So, she quits her job, hops on a plane, and heads to Alex's house in Ohio, determined to tell him she wants to be with him.

When she gets there, Alex is out for a run. She sees him jog past her, but his headphones keep him from hearing her shouting his name. Despite hating running more than anything, Poppy bolts after him.

Breathless, she catches up to Alex in the middle of the road and blurts out everything: she loves him and wants to be with him, but she's been worried that he would think she was too much if he saw the real her outside of their yearly trips. But she's finally ready to take the leap because Alex is her home. They seal the deal with a passionate kiss.

"What I love about it is it's not a huge thing, like she's just running through the streets, but it's so simple," Blyth told ** of the romantic gesture. "You just heard this girl throughout the whole film say how much she hates running, and she's with this guy who's an avid runner... she could totally just wait on his porch for him to get back. But the urgency with which she feels she has to tell him that she actually does love him and wants to be with him makes her run through town after him and basically become a runner for him."

He added that the scene is "the ultimate metaphor for these little compromises in life that we have to make to be with someone."

Blyth also pointed out how it flips the friends-to-lovers story. "I love that it's the girl running after the guy, because so often it's the other way around," he said. "Like often in popular culture, it's the guy who doesn't want to settle down and who is kind of unanchored and untetherable, and the woman who wants to settle down and have kids, and that's kind of the trope. But I love that this film, hence the nuance of life, which is that, actually, it goes both ways."

The movie ends with Poppy and Alex sharing wine in their cozy NYC apartment and later lounging on a beach together (a callback to the book cover). There are even fun little Easter eggs, like the book Alex reads on the beach. It's written by Augustus "Gus" Everett, the author at the heart of Henry's 2020 novel *Beach Read*.

- Returning host Nikki Glaser presided over the live ceremony.

- *The Pitt, The Studio*, and *Adolescence* dominated for TV; *One Battle After Another* steamrolled film winners.

The 2026 Golden Globes winners have boosted front-running contenders in an awards season already filled with Hollywood excellence.

Hosted by returning comedian Nikki Glaser, Sunday's Golden Globes ceremony was the latest awards show to clear a path toward the Oscars, as the Globes' film winners often go on to score follow-up nominations (and even wins) at the Academy Awards.

This year, Timothée Chalamet (*Marty Supreme*) saw perhaps the biggest individual boost ahead of the upcoming Oscar nominations, winning Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy over his biggest Oscar competition, Leonardo DiCaprio (*One Battle After Another*).

Other big film winners included the Oscars' current Best Actress frontrunner, Jessie Buckley (*Hamnet*), and other leading-performance champions like Rose Byrne (*If I Had Legs I'd Kick You*) and Wagner Moura (*The Secret Agent*). supporting performances by Teyana Taylor (*One Battle After Another*) and Stellan Skarsgård (*Sentimental Value*) also triumphed at the Globes, cementing those performers in the wider Academy Awards race, too.

*Hamnet* and *One Battle After Another* also eventually won Best Motion Picture — Drama and Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy, respectively.

Though the Globes are often a foreteller of which films and performances will be nominated at the Oscars, both of the Globes' 2025 Best Motion Picture winners in the dramatic (*The Brutalist)* and comedy/musical (*Emilia Pérez*) categories lost the Best Picture Oscar to *Anora* last year— though three acting winners Adrien Brody (*The Brutalist*), Zoe Saldaña (*Emilia Pérez*), and Kieran Culkin (*A Real Pain*) won both the Golden Globe and the Academy Award that year.

On the television side, popular shows like *The Pitt*, and *The Studio *won big at the Golden Globes, with Noah Wyle winning for his dramatic performance in the medical series, while Seth Rogen earned a Globe for his work in the streaming comedy.

Among TV programs, though, Netflix's *Adolescence* won the most individual awards, with four overall category wins (including for performances by Stephen Graham, Erih Doherty, and Owen Cooper).

Elsewhere, the Globes introduced a new competitive category at the 2026 show, with the group unveiling its first-ever set of Best Podcast nominees late last year. Contenders included *Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard*, Alex Cooper's *Call Her Daddy, The Mel Robbins Podcast, SmartLess *(cohosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett), and NPR's *Up First, *with *Good Hang With Amy Poehler* ultimately taking the first award.

Nearly 25 years after the release of the blockbuster crime caper *Ocean's Eleven*, Julia Roberts and George Clooney are returning for more *Ocean's*.

"The gang is back," Roberts said, confirming *Ocean's 14* during a red carpet interview with Access Hollywood while making her way into the 2026 Golden Globes.

"I guess it's under wraps," Roberts told correspondents Mario Lopez and Kit Hoover. "We're working on it. It's a lot of people with a lot of schedules," she began before being interrupted by rap legend Snoop Dogg, who was handing out "survival kits" to each of the stars and nominees.

Moments before teasing as much as she is currently able to tease about the upcoming sixth installment in the *Ocean's *franchise, Roberts joked that she actually wasn't particularly excited to see Clooney at the ceremony.

"Saw him on Friday," Roberts explained with a bemused smile.

Both Roberts and Clooney were in attendance at the Golden Globes as nominees: Roberts for Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama for her work in Luca Guadagnino's *After the Hunt* and Clooney for Best Performance by an Actor in a Musical or Comedy for his work in Noah Baumbach's *Jay Kelly*.

Though Roberts and Clooney have both won Globes in the past many times over (Roberts has taken home three, while Clooney has four), they walked away empty-handed from Sunday night's ceremony.

Roberts shared more about *Ocean's* with *Entertainment Tonight*, revealing that among the star-studded ensemble cast, Brad Pitt's schedule has proven the hardest to work around.

"I think Brad works the most. So his schedule is probably the trickiest," she said. Clarifying in case her words might be taken out of context, Roberts insisted, "He's not holding it up! He's just so popular."****

Back in October, Clooney teased a "great script" for the next installment.

Clooney and Roberts appeared in the first *Ocean's *film as Danny and Tess Ocean, exes who reconcile at the end and appear in *Ocean's Twelve *as a couple again. But Roberts declined to return for *Ocean's Thirteen*, and neither appeared in the all-female reboot *Ocean's 8 *in 2018.

"We just got the budget approved at Warner Bros., and we're trying to set up," Clooney revealed last fall. "It's just scheduling, so it's just setting a start date for us. Probably start in about 9 or 10 months, shooting."**

A teacher who survived the 2022 shooting inside a Robb Elementary school classroom in Uvalde, Texas, told a jury Monday the attack began with a "black shadow" with a gun walking inside and that he prayed for the attack to be over after being shot along with his students.

Arnulfo Reyes' testimony came on the fifth day of the trial for Adrian Gonzales, a former Uvalde schools police officer who was among the first law enforcement responders to the scene. Gonzales has pleaded not guilty to 29 counts of child abandonment or endangerment as prosecutors allege he did nothing to stop the gunman in the first moments of the attack.

The gunman killed 19 students and two teachers. Reyes was shot on the arm and back and said he was taunted by 18-year-old gunman Salvador Ramos.

"I looked at my door and that's when I saw him ... a black shadow. The black shadow was holding a gun. I just saw the fire come out of the gun," Reyes testified. "He shot at me and hit me in my arm. That's when I fell to the ground."

"When I fell, he came around and he shot the kids," he said.

Reyes said Ramos turned back around and shot him in the back. He prayed "and I gave myself to the Lord ... and waited for everything to be over."

Reyes said the gunman at one point walked into the adjoining classroom, where he said he heard a student say, "Officer, we're in here," before he heard more shooting.

Reyes said Ramos also taunted him while he tried to pretend he was dead.

Reyes was a teacher in Room 111. None of the children in his classroom survived.

Just before Reyes testified, the court watched the surveillance video of Ramos entering the school and start shooting. The judge had warned the courtroom the images and sounds would be graphic.

Gonzales showed no emotion on his face as emergency calls to police and a woman can be heard screaming "get in your room!" He appeared to flinch when the first loud shots rang out in the hallway. He also covered his mouth with his left hand.

Gonzales was among the first of more than 370 federal, state and local officers to arrive at the school. It would take more than an hour for a tactical team to go into a classroom and kill the gunman.

The trial in Corpus Christi, Texas, is tightly focused on Gonzales' actions. Prosecutors allege he abandoned his active shooter training and did not try to engage or distract the gunman while he was still outside the school. They said Gonzales failed again minutes later when a group of officers went inside the school only to retreat when they came under heavy gunfire.

While much of the trial has been focused on events outside the school when the attack started, prosecutors are using the carnage inside the classroom as the ultimate result of what they said was Gonzales' failure to stop the gunman when he had a chance.

At one point, prosecutors showed the school portraits of each of the schoolchildren and asked Reyes to read their names and say whether they died or survived.

Reyes was not asked about Gonzales during questioning by prosecutors, and mentioned only encountering a Border Patrol officer when the shooting stopped.

At the start of their cross-examination, defense attorneys noted the doors to the outside of the school, as well as Reyes' classroom, were unlocked in violation of school policy. Reyes said he'd believed his classroom door was locked.

Reyes' testimony will continue Tuesday.

The opening days of the trial included dramatic replays of the initial emergency calls, testimony from teachers who huddled with terrified students, and the mother of one of the victims recounting how her daughter had asked to leave school early that day.

Jurors have also seen graphic photos from inside the school and classrooms. Prosecutors noted how students made 911 calls from inside the classroom with the gunman.

The trial is a rare case in which a police officer could be convicted of allegedly failing to act to stop a crime and protect lives.

Gonzales and former Uvalde schools Police Chief Pete Arredondo are the only two responding officers that day to face charges. Arredondo's trial has not yet been set.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The United States accused Russia on Monday of a "dangerous and inexplicable escalation" of its nearly four-year war in Ukraine at a time when the Trump administration is trying to advance negotiations toward peace.

U.S. deputy ambassador to the United Nations Tammy Bruce singled out Russia's launch of a nuclear-capable Oreshnik ballistic missile last week close to Ukraine's border with Poland, a NATO ally.

She told an emergency meeting of the Security Council that the United States deplores "the staggering number of casualties" in the conflict and condemns Russia's intensifying attacks on energy and other infrastructure.

Ukraine called for the meeting after last Thursday's overnight Russian bombardment with hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles, including the powerful, new hypersonic Oreshnik missile, which Moscow used for only the second time in what was a clear warning to Kyiv's NATO allies.

The large-scale attack came days after Ukraine and its allies reported major progress toward agreeing on how to defend the country from further Moscow aggression if a U.S.-led peace deal is struck.

The attack also coincided with a new chill in relations between Moscow and Washington after Russia condemned the U.S. seizure of an oil tanker in the North Atlantic. And it came as U.S. President Donald Trump signaled he is on board with a hard-hitting sanctions package meant to economically cripple Russia.

Moscow has given no public signal it is willing to budge from its maximalist demands on Ukraine. And Russia's U.N. ambassador on Monday blamed the diplomatic impasse on Ukraine.

Europe's leaders condemned the attack using the Oreshnik as "escalatory and unacceptable," and U.S. envoy Bruce was equally tough on Monday.

"At a moment of tremendous potential, due only to President Trump's unparalleled commitment to peace around the world, both sides should be seeking ways to de-escalate," she said. "Yet Russia's action risks expanding and intensifying the war."

Bruce reminded Russia that nearly a year ago it voted in favor of a Security Council resolution calling for an end to the conflict in Ukraine.

"It would be nice if Russia matched their words with deeds," she said. "In the spirit of that resolution, Russia, Ukraine and Europe must pursue peace seriously and bring this nightmare to an end."

But Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told the Security Council that until Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy "comes to his senses and agrees to realistic conditions for negotiations, we will continue solving the problem by military means."

"He was warned long ago, with each passing day, each day which he squanders, the conditions for negotiations will only get worse for him," Nebenzia said. "Similarly, each vile attack on Russian civilians will elicit a stiff response."

Ukraine's U.N. Ambassador Andriy Melnyk countered that Russia is more vulnerable now than at any time since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. Its economy is slowing and oil revenue is down.

"Russia wants to sell to this council and the whole U.N. family the impression that it is invincible, but this is another illusion," he told the council. "The carefully staged image of strength is nothing but smoke and mirrors, completely detached from reality."

VALHALLA, N.Y. (AP) — A more than $182 million settlement has been reached with victims of a deadly 2015 collision between a train and an SUV at a suburban New York crossing.

The majority of the settlement with Metro-North Railroad goes to the families of five passengers killed when an SUV got stuck on the tracks in Valhalla, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of New York City, the Journal News reports.

About $79 million of the settlement will go to one specific passenger, based on their projected lifetime earnings, according to the newspaper. Payouts to the families of other passengers killed in the crash range from $35 million to $4 million.

The Journal News reviewed the settlement last week before it was sealed by a judge and no longer made available to the public.

A jury in 2024 found that Metro-North bore 71% of the liability for the five passengers' deaths and the injuries of others, and 63% for the death of the SUV driver whose car was on the tracks. The jury specifically faulted the train engineer and the railroad's oversight of the line's electrified third rail.

Andrew Maloney, a lawyer for some of the roughly 30 injured passengers, said the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates the commuter system that also serves parts of Connecticut, should have resolved the litigation sooner.

"This should have never taken 11 years," he said Monday. "They dragged it out."

Maloney added that problems identified with the third rail's design still have not been corrected all these years later.

The MTA declined to comment on the specifics of the settlement. But it said in a statement that it has continued to work with state and federal transportation officials on "material railroad crossing safety enhancements throughout the railroad network over the last decade."

The Feb. 3, 2015, crash occurred during the evening rush hour as the SUV drove onto the tracks while navigating in backed-up traffic.

The crossing gate arm came down onto the vehicle and the driver ended up driving further onto the tracks.

The train smashed into the SUV at about 50 mph (80 kph) after the engineer hit the emergency brake only three seconds before the fiery collision. Parts of the railroad's electrified third rail ripped off the ground, piercing the SUV's gas tank and slicing into the train's first passenger car.

The suspect in an investigation of a fire at a prominent Jackson, Mississippi, synagogue confessed to starting the blaze because of its "Jewish ties," according to a criminal complaint submitted by the FBI.

The suspect set fire to Beth Israel Congregation – the state's largest Jewish house of worship – early Saturday, using gasoline as an accelerant, the complaint alleges, heavily damaging the structure.

In an interview with authorities on Saturday, the suspect, identified as Stephen Spencer Pittman, 19, admitted to setting Beth Israel on fire, calling it the "synagogue of Satan," the complaint says.

Pittman was charged with maliciously damaging or destroying a building by means of fire or an explosive, the complaint shows.

Pittman attended his first federal court appearance via video conference call from a hospital bed and both of his hands were visibly bandaged, The reported. A public defender was appointed for Pittman and the defendant told the judge that he was a high school graduate and had three semesters of college, according to the wire service.

Prosecutors said Pittman could face five to 20 years in prison if convicted as charged. The defendant said "Jesus Christ is Lord" when the judge read him his rights, the AP reported.

Pittman was remanded to the custody of the US Marshals Service and is scheduled to appear in court again on January 20, court records show.

CNN has reached out to the public defender representing Pittman for comment.

According to the complaint, Pittman traveled from his home in Madison County, stopped at Mac's Gas in Ridgeland, Mississippi, and then went to Beth Israel.

Authorities used data linked to Pittman's phone via Life360, a location-sharing app that works through real-time GPS tracking, to determine his movements before he went to Beth Israel, according to the complaint.

Pittman also confessed to starting the fire in text messages to his father, who alerted authorities, the complaint says.

The texts included a photo of the rear side of the synagogue with messages such as "There's a furnace in the back," "BTW my plate is off," "Hoodie is on," and, "And they have the best cameras."

Later that the day, the father said he observed burns on his son's ankles. Pittman admitted to lighting Beth Israel on fire and laughed while describing what he did, the complaint says.

Pittman acted alone in the attack, Robert A. Eikhoff, special agent in charge of the FBI Jackson Field Office, said in a news release from the US Attorney's Office, Southern District of Mississippi.

An investigation by federal, state and local authorities is ongoing, amid a wave of antisemitic attacks in recent years.

"At the appropriate time, state charges will also be pursued in addition to any federal charges," Gov. Tate Reeves said in a news release Monday.

"This disgusting act of anti-Semitic violence has no place in our country," Attorney General Pam Bondi said in the news release. "I have directed my prosecutors to seek severe penalties for this heinous act and remain deeply committed to protecting Jewish Americans from hatred."

Authorities identifying Pittman as the suspect "puts a face and name to this tragedy but does not change our resolve to proudly – even defiantly – continue Jewish life in Jackson in the face of hatred," the synagogue said in a statement Monday.

This isn't the first time the synagogue has burned. On September 18, 1967, Beth Israel's temple was bombed by local Ku Klux Klan members, in part because of the congregation's work in the civil rights movement, according to the synagogue's website.

The suspect in Saturday's fire was found at a local hospital with non-life-threatening burn injuries and, once medically cleared, will be released into the custody of the FBI, Felton said.

The fire began around 3 a.m. Saturday, according to the Jackson Fire Department. The building was closed and all doors were locked when fire units arrived, the department said.

"The Jackson Fire Department responded quickly, contained the blaze and extinguished the fire," Jackson Mayor John Horhn said in a statement.

Zach Shemper, president of Beth Israel, told CNN Monday he was informed by law enforcement the suspect in the arson attack posted antisemitic comments online.

"I was told that the perpetrator had been posting antisemitic comments on social media," Shemper said, adding he had not seen the postings himself.

Shemper declined to say whether he believed the fire should be considered a hate crime.

He said multiple churches have offered their space to Beth Israel as he expects it could take up to a year to rebuild.

Shemper recalled feeling both "sadness" and "anger" when he learned early Saturday his synagogue had been destroyed in a fire.

"When something like this happens so catastrophic, your mind goes 100 miles an hour in every direction you can think of," Shemper said. "It was very much an influx of emotion and different thoughts all together. For someone to hurt the safe space that we hold as a congregation, it's just so detrimental and catastrophic."

The FBI is working with local law enforcement officials on the investigation, the agency's field office in Jackson told CNN.

Hate crimes are "the highest priority of the FBI's civil rights program because of the devastating impact they have on families and communities," according to the agency.

Founded in 1860, Beth Israel Congregation built the first synagogue in the state of Mississippi and has grown in recent decades to be the state's largest congregation, according to its website.

Investigators determined the fire started in the synagogue's library, which sustained extensive damage, and the destruction continued toward the sanctuary, Felton said. He added there is smoke damage throughout the building, meaning the congregation will not be able to return for some time.

Several Torah scrolls were destroyed, according to the American Jewish Committee, which condemned the incident as a "hateful act."

There is "significant" damage to the library and offices of the temple, and smoke and ash throughout the building, Michele Schipper, a past president of Beth Israel, said.

She added the congregation has had "tremendous support from the community."

"We're all devastated, but we are ready to rebuild, and with the support and outreach from our community, we will continue to be a vibrant Jewish community in Jackson, Mississippi," Schipper said.

The Goldring/Woldenberg Institute of Southern Jewish Life, a nonprofit that provides services, education and programming to support, connect and celebrate Jewish life in the South, is based at Beth Israel, and many of its employees are members of the congregation.

"As Jackson's only synagogue, Beth Israel is a beloved institution, and it is the fellowship of our neighbors and extended community that will see us through," a statement from the institute said.

In the US, antisemitic incidents have been on the rise for several years, with Anti-Defamation League data showing the number for 2024 reached its highest level since the organization began tracking in 1979. According to the FBI, which enforces federal hate crime laws and collects statistics on acts of violence, threats against Jews in the US far exceed those against any other religious group.

"Acts of antisemitism, racism, and religious hatred are attacks on Jackson as a whole and will be treated as acts of terror against residents' safety and freedom to worship," Horhn said. "Targeting people because of their faith, race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation is morally wrong, un-American, and completely incompatible with the values of this city."

Carole Zawatsky, CEO of The Tree of Life, the Pittsburgh synagogue that in 2018 saw the deadliest-ever attack on Jewish people in the US, called the attack on Beth Israel "horrific."

"We mourn the destruction and the loss of security and safety that comes in the aftermath of such violence," she said. "The intentional burning of a Jewish house of worship — especially one with a storied history — causes fear and raises the specter of antisemitism and hate."

The fire was not just an attack on a building, said Jim Berk, CEO of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles.

"It was an assault on the heart of Jewish life in the South, and on a legacy shaped in partnership," Berk said. "A house of worship should be a sanctuary, not a crime scene. When antisemitism strikes, it tears at the fabric of American life, wounding not just Jews but all who believe in freedom of faith. The solidarity shown across faiths and communities is a reminder that our strength lies in standing together against bigotry and violence."
