Louis Tomlinson rose to global fame as a member of One Direction, one of the defining boy bands of modern pop.
Formed during The X Factor UK in 2010, the group quickly became a worldwide phenomenon with chart-topping hits and a devoted fanbase. Over the years, Tomlinson has reflected on the band's evolution from "bubblegum pop" to more mature songwriting. In a recent conversation on BBC Radio 2, he opened up about a song that he felt marked "a turning point" for the band.
"My favorite One Direction song on record is probably 'Story of My Life,'" he told host Scott Mills. "I think that was a real moment."

Released in October 2013, "Story of My Life" served as the second single from the band's third album, Midnight Memories. The track achieved major chart success, reaching No. 2 in the U.K. and cracking the top 10 in the United States. For Tomlinson, however, its significance went beyond numbers.
"That's not the kind of record you expect from a band like One Direction," he explained. "It has a little bit more to it. And I think that was kind of a turning point for us."
The 34-year-old recalled feeling "really proud" of the track and the way it resonated with listeners and critics alike.

"There was definitely a kind of mold of boy bands before then," he said. "And I think that was a song that really helped us kind of break out of that."

The group, which was made up of Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles and the late Liam Payne, initially built its success on high-energy pop anthems. Their breakout hit, "What Makes You Beautiful," topped charts in the U.K. and became a massive international success, peaking at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
While undeniably catchy, Tomlinson has since described that early sound as "corny" and reminiscent of a "Disney film." That contrast is why "Story of My Life" stands out so clearly in his memory.
Despite One Direction's worldwide success, the band went on an indefinite hiatus in 2016.
Earlier this year, Tomlinson released his third solo album, How Did I Get Here? and is set to begin a world tour later this month to support his new music.
