Guy Fieri is honoring his late friend and fellow Food Network star Carl Ruiz, who died at age 44 in 2019.

Fieri shared a post on Instagram on what would have been the chef’s 51st birthday on April 4, wishing a “happy birthday to the one and only Chef Carl ‘The Cuban’ Ruiz” in his caption.

“We all miss you brother!” Fieri wrote.

He shared a picture of Ruiz wearing a pinstripe apron and sitting on a medieval-looking throne on the beach while holding a towel in one hand and a drink in the other. In the photo, Ruiz smiles at the camera in sunglasses.

People shared tributes to the late chef in the comments section of the post.

“FOREVER 🤍🤍🤍🤍,” food blogger Catherine McCord wrote.

Tournament of Champions season three winner Tiffani Faison also showed support: “🫶🫶🫶.”

“I love that you celebrate Carl each year 🖤,” another commenter wrote.

Fieri has made a tradition of honoring his late friend, who was a judge on Guy’s Grocery Games, on his birthday and the anniversary of his death.

The Food Network star posted on the anniversary of Ruiz’s death on Sept. 21, 2025, saying, “I miss you so much my brother Chef Carl.”

“You cooked, You laughed, You lit up the world, You are one of a kind,” he wrote. “RIP the CUBAN.”

He accompanied his words with a recreation of an image of Ruiz standing on a mountain in a long fur coat holding his arms out with a cigarette in his teeth. In his version, Fieri stands in front of a house wearing seemingly the same coat over shorts with a cigar in his mouth.

On what would have been Ruiz’s 50th birthday last year, Fieri shared another post dedicated to his “brother/friend/chef.”

“Miss you my brutha RIP,” the Food Network star wrote in his caption under a carousel of photos. One was an image of Ruiz in seemingly the same fur coat with a cigarette in his mouth standing on a cliff over crashing waves, edited onto aTime magazine Person of the Year cover.

The other photos show Fieri and his son, Ryder, with Ruiz holding a birthday cake that said, “Happy Birthday Carl,” and a photo of Ruiz riding a mechanical bull.

At the time of his friend’s death, Fieri wrote on Instagram, “I’m heartbroken that my friend chef Carl Ruiz is gone. I have no words to describe what a great friend he was to me and my family. His ability to make me laugh and smile under any circumstances was only outshined by his talent as a chef.”

“Over the years, I’ve met a lot of great people but a friend like Carl is one in a hundred million. Carl ’The Cuban’ Ruiz will forever live on in my heart and in those of all who loved him,” he said.

Ruiz died in 2019 of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, a condition marked by the buildup of fats and cholesterol in the artery walls leading to narrowed arteries that block blood flow, per the Mayo Clinic.
