The Testaments is taking fans of The Handmaid’s Tale back into the oppressive world of Gilead, but this time with a new set of characters. Based upon Margaret Atwood’s sequel novel of the same name, the Hulu drama—which takes place five years after the events of the original series—follows Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd), Agnes (Chase Infiniti), and Daisy (Lucy Halliday) as their lives weave together under the dystopian theocracy. But make no mistake…despite being an adaptation of Atwood’s work, the series is set up to stand entirely on its own.
“The world has moved on from events of the earlier series,” executive producer Warren Littlefield told Deadline in a March 2026 interview. “We didn’t want to do season 7 of The Handmaid’s Tale. It’s different time, a different [color] palette. It’s no longer the point of view of June; now it’s the point of view of these young women. If you know the mothership, great, but you don’t need to. You can come to this fresh. It’s its own original experience.”
The producer also described The Testaments as “an awakening,” adding, “[Gilead is] the only world they’ve ever known and they’re not fully aware of the horrors of it just yet. Readers and followers of The Handmaid’s Tale and readers of The Testaments may know more about who Agnes is than Agnes does. We’re going to let them and Agnes catch up.”
In her 2025 ELLE Women in Hollywood interview, Infiniti explained how The Testaments (among other projects) allowed her to further challenge herself in the wake of her starring role in the Oscar-winning film One Battle After Another. “Anything where I get the opportunity to push myself in ways that I couldn’t have imagined, but also get the chance to observe others, and learn from others, and treat every opportunity as a master class,” she said. “That’s the next dream job for me.”

How many episodes are in The Testaments?
The Testaments will contain a total of 10 episodes.
When do new episodes air on Hulu?
The first three episodes of The Testaments premiered on April 8. Moving forward, the remaining episodes will air one at a time, landing every week on Wednesdays at 3 A.M. ET. through the end of May.
