Richard Gere is clearing the path for a new generation.

The *American Gigolo* actor recently got candid about the pride he feels over his eldest son's burgeoning acting career.

"I'm proud of him on two levels," Gere, 76, told PEOPLE in an interview published Monday. "One, he's really good. He really kind of preternaturally knows what he's doing."

Gere continued, "But he's also handling it really well. He's a good kid. He's a really good young man who kind of gets it, and this is not an easy job. Not everyone can function within it. So I think he can stay."

Gere's 26-year-old son Homer is hot off the heels of a four-episode stint as Dylan Reid on season 3 of *Euphoria*. Coming up next, the young actor will star alongside Igby Rigney, Kaia Gerber, and Wes Bentley on *The Shard*s, a Ryan Murphy-produced horror series based on a novel by Bret Easton Ellis.

"I still need to see his second episode of *Euphoria*, but he has this big thing coming up with Ryan Murphy, and he just finished shooting a film with Oliver Stone," Gere told the outlet, joking, "So I can retire now. I'm passing the torch."

As for his feelings about having his son follow in his footsteps, Gere noted that the commitment to acting doesn't have to be lifelong.

"I don't think he's got to make a life choice to commit to this if he's doing this now," Gere said. "He's good at it and he's having fun. But he can become a rock climber if he wants to do that."

Gere, who is celebrated for roles in *Pretty Woman, Looking for Mr. Goodbar, Chicago*, and more, added, "I'm still doing it, so it must have been the most powerful choice, but I was also a musician. I was a studio musician and had a lot of other things going on. But acting was the one that kind of brought it all together — my interest in psychology, philosophy, music, art."

Gere and his former wife, Carey Lowell, welcomed Homer in February 2000. The actor remarried in 2018 and has since welcomed two kids with wife Alejandra Silva.

While attending the *Euphoria* season 3 premiere in April, Homer told* Entertainment Tonight* that his dad "gives great advice" and has been teaching him the ins and outs of Hollywood for years.

"It's not necessarily related to like the craft, but more like how do you carry yourself, how do you make this work in a positive way," he told the outlet. "Having that kind of sounding board constantly is amazing."
