One of the top transfer portal acquisitions in college basketball this offseason is set to miss the entire 2026-27 campaign.
St. John's forward Donnie Freeman, a transfer who spent his first two seasons at Syracuse, suffered a non-contact torn Achilles during a workout and will miss the entire season. Coach Rick Pitino announced the news on Wednesday evening.
"Donnie Freeman had successful Achilles tendon surgery performed by Dr Martin O'Malley," Pitino wrote in a post on social media. "Donnie had a non contact injury in a workout and will miss the season. Donnie is an awesome young man, we will get him back better than ever!"

Freeman, a former five-star recruit, had an impressive freshman season cut short with a leg injury. He returned as a sophomore in 2025-26, starting 21 games and averaging 16.5 points and 7.2 rebounds for the Orange. He ranked as a top-15 player in the transfer portal this offseason.
Without him, the Red Storm will instead rely on some of their other offseason additions, which included quite a few international prospects as well as another top transfer in former Baylor wing Tounde Yessoufou.
