**Warning: This article contains spoilers from *Stranger Things* season 5, episodes 1-4.**

*Stranger Things *has certainly proved that great VFX goes a long way (and takes a long time), but there's still plenty of room for some on-camera magic.

In its fifth and final season, the sci-fi epic sees Max (Sadie Sink) forced to explore the mind of series villain Vecna, walking through the memories of the boy he once was, Henry Creel. Along the way, eagle-eyed viewers no doubt noticed that one scene included quite a few familiar names — and one *very *familiar face.

While exploring Hawkins High in the year 1959, Max crosses paths with none other than Joyce Maldonado (not yet Byers). It's a brief moment, and at a glance, fans would be forgiven for assuming that the woman we see is a de-aged Winona Ryder, handing out flyers in a high school hall.

But actually, it's model and actress Birdy, who just so happens to be the spitting image of the iconic *Reality Bites *star.

Birdy as young Joyce Byers in Stranger Things 5

Birdy as young Joyce Byers on 'Stranger Things'.

Sharing a behind-the-scenes image of the show on Instagram, the actress cleared up any confusion, writing, "Not AI winona :)."

In a subsequent post, Birdy — who also appeared on an episode of* Chicago Fire* earlier this year — shared a carousel of images from the Netflix show's set, writing, "So incredibly grateful to be a part of S5."

In the comments section, fans were shocked — and deeply impressed by the physical similarities between the two performers.

"I genuinely thought they de-aged Winona somehow," one Instagram user wrote.  "You were great - hope we get to see you more!"

Another added, "Bruhhh you two are identical I literally thought it was AI." One commenter joked, "DNA test. Now."

Indeed, Birdy looks impressively like Ryder from her breakout era of the '80s in films like* Beetlejuice, Heathers, *and* Edward Scissorhands*. The brief scene, from the fourth episode "Sorcerer," sees Joyce handing out flyers for her upcoming school theater production of *Oklahoma*. The actress notably features some very familiar names: it stars a young Jim Hopper, Mike's parents, Karen and Ted, Eddie's dad Alan Munson, Bob's sister Patty Newby, and Vecna himself — Henry Creel.

Hope Hynes Love as Miss Harris on 'Stranger Things'

The events surrounding Joyce's theater group are further explored in the spinoff stage play, *Stranger Things: The First Shadow*. But the Duffer Brothers previously made it clear that no one from the West End of Broadway productions would be reprising their part for the TV series.

"We're very careful with the play," Matt Duffer previously told **. "Knowing how few people in the scheme of things are gonna be able to see that, to make sure that season 5 functions entirely on its own."

Ross added, "But there are Easter eggs involving the play. So if you've seen it, it's a fun watch, especially as we go to Volume 2."

Along with all the names that appear on the flyer Joyce is handing around, she also calls out to a kid named "Harrington" in the hallway. Meaning that perhaps we'll get a glimpse at Steve's father, the original jerk jock.

***Get your daily dose of entertainment news, celebrity updates, and what to watch with our EW Dispatch newsletter.***

As of yet, it's unclear how much more of Henry's past — and Joyce's play — we'll get to see. But the Duffer Brothers have certainly hinted at some overlap between season 5 and *The First Shadow.*

*"*A lot of the stuff that's covered in the Broadway show is covered in the final season, as well," Matt teased. "Actually, we had to block the Broadway show producers a lot from putting in too much material that we were gonna have in season 5 because we did not want it to be too spoilery."

Episodes 5-7 of *Stranger Things* season 5 will drop on Christmas Day on Netflix.**

Netflix audiences are in for a festive treat as comedian Matt Rife drops his holiday-themed crowd work special.

Matt Rife, the rising comedy star known for his viral videos and arena-filling performances, is spreading holiday cheer with his new Netflix release, Matt Rife: Unwrapped — A Christmas Crowd Work Special.

Premiering on Dec. 2, the special is taped in Phoenix, Arizona, and sees Rife donning Santa pants while engaging the audience with jokes about gifts, seasonal traditions and a mix of raunchy humor.

"MERRY CHRISTMAS YA FILTHY ANIMALS! 🤪" Rife wrote, sharing the news on Instagram. "My new Christmas Special Unwrapped is NOW ON Netflix! Go watch it and put it on to fall asleep to 🎅🏼"

Fans quickly responded with excitement.

"Lol I can't believe you made this happen 👏👏👏 great job," a fan said.

Another chimed in, saying, "🤣🤣🤣 Loved this 👏👏 and loved they invited Macaulay 🤣."

"This was an unlikely trio. Lol 😂😂❤️," added another who was amazed at the collaboration.

Fans expressed their eagerness to see more, commenting, "We need the full movie IMMEDIATELY 😂."

Others praised his creative promotional approach, stating, "👏👏👏 bravo on the pure genius promo for your special."

View this post on Instagram

Bringing Hollywood Legends Together

One of the highlights of the special's promotion was a surprise video featuring Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin and Netflix favorite Charlie Sheen.

Rife explained how he managed to bring the unlikely duo together: he contacted Culkin's team and pitched the idea, while Sheen, who had recently followed him on Instagram, agreed after a lunch meeting.

"Neither were sensitive or worried about anything. They were just up for having some fun," Rife told The Hollywood Reporter.

Rife emphasized that the special is not just about stunts or star-studded cameos. He described crowd work as his favorite aspect of comedy.

"It's a new experience for every show, and that's what makes the night exciting. With Arizona and the theme of Christmas, we struck gold," he shared.

Rife's Christmas special doesn't shy away from edgy humor. Some segments touch on adult topics, yet he also highlights heartwarming interactions.

"Some of my favorite moments were the couple with their parents talking about the sexy calendar they do each month. It made me fully believe in that marriage," he said.

Off-stage, Rife's personal life adds to his holiday spirit. He's been dating fitness coach and bodybuilder Mariah Morse since March. Morse often supports Rife during his tours and shares glimpses of their life together, including moments with their dogs, Kona and Hammer. On Rife's 30th birthday, Morse celebrated him on Instagram, highlighting both his charm and his generosity.

Looking ahead, Rife is also balancing a busy acting schedule. He has a high-profile role in the upcoming show The Altruists and is developing a comedy film called The Chasm.

Rife's combination of star power, spontaneous humor, and personal charm ensures that his Netflix special isn't just another release; it's an event that invites audiences to laugh, interact and maybe even see a little Christmas magic in unexpected places.

Anne Hathaway's bold Instagram gesture sparked fans' excitement as the actress gave her followers a tantalizing glimpse of what's ahead.

Eagle-eyed followers spotted the Oscar-winning actress' update that offered a sneak peek at her upcoming 2026 projects.

The 43-year-old has been active on social media, showing fans a peek of her life. From her fangirling moments over the New York Knicks to back-to-back red carpet events and fashion shows, she's offering a vibrant snapshot of her life both on and off the spotlight.

However, with only a few weeks left before the year ends, the Alice in Wonderland star is ready to kick-start 2026 with her return to the big screen.

After headlining Mothers' Instinct and The Idea of You in 2024, Hathaway is gearing up for a busy year ahead with a slew of high-profile movies on the horizon.

In a striking Instagram update, the actress listed her four upcoming films, sharing both the titles and the expected release dates.

Starting off with the psychological drama-thriller film Mother Mary set to hit theaters in April, followed by the highly anticipated sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2, coming on May 1.

Adding to the list is Christopher Nolan's movie The Odyssey on July 17 and the adaptation of the psychological thriller novel Verity, which will be released on Oct. 2.

Despite keeping her Instagram update low-key, fans immediately took notice of this and even shared screenshots on social media, showing how thrilled they are for her movie comeback.

"She said Booked and Busy," one wrote.

As early as now, fans were congratulating the actress for a promising year ahead.

"Wow! That's impressive. Getting one movie out per year is already remarkable. Good for her! Still looking stunning," an X user noted.

*EW* has reached out to reps for Lin.

Lin is "not a gamer" and "leaned into that as a strength when pitching his take on the material," insiders told *The Hollywood Reporter*, which was the first to report the news.

"He aims to find the humanity in the characters and weave timely themes into the story, while building out a world and mythology," the outlet said.

Lin's previous directing credits include entries into the blockbuster car-racing franchise, including 2006's *The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift*; 2009's *Fast & Furious*; 2011's *Fast Five*; 2013's *Fast & Furious 6*; and 2021's *F9: The Fast Saga*.

He was also behind the camera on the films *Star Trek Beyond* (2016) and *Annapolis* (2006), as well as TV episodes of *True Detective*, *Community*, and the *Magnum P.I. *reboot.

Lin famously stepped away from his position helming the 2023 movie *Fast X*, days into production.

"With the support of Universal, I have made the difficult decision to step back as director of *Fast X*, while remaining with the project as a producer," Lin said at the time. "Over 10 years and five films, we have been able to shoot the best actors, the best stunts, and the best damn car chases. On a personal note, as the child of Asian immigrants, I am proud of helping to build the most diverse franchise in movie history. I will forever be grateful to the amazing cast, crew, and studio for their support, and for welcoming me into the *Fast* family."

Deadline reported that Lin's departure was due to creative differences.**
