Nathan Fillion and Jenna Dewan tell PEOPLE that the season 8 premiere of The Rookie, which was filmed in Prague, was like "an action film"

The pair play married couple John Nolan and Bailey Nune on the police procedural, and the characters use the European location as their "second honeymoon"

The Rookie season 8 kicks off on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC and will be available to stream on Hulu the following day

Nathan Fillion is promising plenty of excitement in the upcoming season of The Rookie.

For the first time ever, the hit ABC series is going overseas, kicking off the season 8 premiere in Prague. The actor, 54, along with on-screen wife, Jenna Dewan, recently sat down with PEOPLE to tease what's in store for their beloved characters, John Nolan and Bailey Nune, as they embark on this international adventure.

"It felt different. It was amazing. We had an incredible time," Dewan, 45, shares. "You feel like you are back in time. It just felt so special. It felt like we were in the midst of a film, an action film. It was so cool."

"It felt like a James Bond movie," Fillion chimes in. "It really did. I wasn't wearing a cop uniform — I was wearing a suit. I felt very fancy. And we're walking in these incredible squares and beside these beautiful rivers."

"I felt very, very badass," the Step Up alum admits.

Fillion also notes that Prague was the perfect place for Nolan and Bailey to have their "second honeymoon" after their first was "kind of a bust."

"It was a lot of murder," Dewan quips. "So this one felt like, well, while we're here, let's make this romantic because how can you not?"

Still, she reveals that the plan for a peaceful getaway doesn't exactly go as smoothly as they had hoped. "Lots of unexpected yet bonding adrenaline," she teases, as Fillion jokes, "Beggars can't be choosers. Yet, I think they're two very grateful people who enjoy each other at the very least."

Dewan adds: "I always say I think it is the blending of tones that really works well because we give strong action. There's a lot of suspense and scare almost, but there's so much comedy, and there's a lot of banter and there's the romance."

If the pair had to describe what fans will see from their characters in the police procedural's latest installment with just three words, they would say: teamwork, friction and opportunity.

While they weren't filming, the costars say another perk of the European location was the vacations and excursions they were able to go on. Fillion even extended his trip and Dewan decided to go solo.

"I was the busiest because I went sans kids," she explains. "I was — every free moment I had — living. We went to dinners, we did tours. I felt like I finally matured to the point where I wanted to do tours all day long. It took me a while, but now, firmly, I want to learn about history and tours."

"It was so good," she gushes. "The castles — it was fun."

The Rookie season 8 premieres on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC and will be available to stream on Hulu the following day.

Shea Whigham is grateful for his time on Boardwalk Empire.

The actor, 56, told PEOPLE at the New York City premiere of his latest show Death by Lightning that he formed many "deep friendships" while working on Boardwalk Empire.

Whigham said he's "very tight" with his former costars Steve Buscemi and Michael Shannon, and called director and executive producer Tim Van Patten "one of my closest friends."

"That was a good one," the actor remembered of the HBO period crime drama. "These are not just jobs. You walk away with deep friendships because of the work."

Whigham starred as Elias "Eli" Thompson in Boardwalk Empire for all five seasons from 2010 to 2014. The series, set in New Jersey during the Prohibition era, was about the life of criminal kingpin Enoch L. Johnson.

The show also featured Michael Pitt, Kelly Macdonald, Michael Stuhlbarg, Stephen Graham and Paul Sparks.

Whigham shared the screen again with Shannon, 51, on Netflix's Death by Lightning. The limited series, created by Mike Makowsky, was about the true story of Andrew Garfield's presidency and assassination.

Shannon played the 20th president of the United States, while Whigham played Republican politician Roscoe Conkling. The two also costarred in 2011's Take Shelter and 2020's The Quarry.

Whigham gushed about the cast on the Netflix show, which included Nick Offerman, Matthew MacFadyen, Bradley Whitford and Betty Gilpin. On the red carpet, he said he became "very good friends" with Offerman.

"It seems like he has a very bright future in this business," the actor joked of the Parks & Recreation alum. "I think it's gonna work out for him. It's not that he's funny. It's the handsomeness that I think is gonna work out for him."

There are thrills and chills aplenty on Paramount+, with some coming directly from the parent company's own 113-plus-year history. These movies span galaxies, with our heroes battling monsters, aliens, and short attention spans.

Featuring everything from blockbuster franchises to cinematic classics, here are the 16 best sci-fi and horror films streaming on Paramount+.

Annihilation (2018)

Natalie Portman as Lena in 'Annihilation'

Natalie Portman as Lena in 'Annihilation'. Paramount Pictures

In the swamplands of Florida there sits a forcefield that formed after a meteor hit the area. Separated from regular life by a kaleidoscopic shell whose circumference continues to expand, the Shimmer, as it's called, has claimed the lives of every person who has gone inside — except one. Biologist Lena (Natalie Portman) lost her husband, Kane (Oscar Isaac), after he was presumably killed during a military operation, but when Kane returns home with his memory gone and his health failing, Lena looks for answers.

A visually stunning sci-fi movie that allows the audience to meditate on themes of grief, depression, and destruction, *Annihilation** *is "the kind of film that leaves you dazzled, shellshocked — and not entirely sure whether your own moviegoing DNA hasn't been altered a little in the process," EW's critic writes.

Where to watch *Annihilation*: Paramount+

**EW grade:** A–

**Director: **Alex Garland

**Cast:** Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny, Gina Rodriguez

Arrival (2016)

Amy Adams as Louise Banks on 'Arrival'

If you could see how the future will unfold, would it alter your choices? Louise Banks (Amy Adams) is an accomplished linguist who is called into military service after 12 extraterrestrial spacecraft land in various locations around the world. Tasked with working alongside physicist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) to translate what the extraterrestrials — referred to as heptapods — are after, Louise begins to bond with and understand Earth's visitors.

An alien invasion movie told in the style of an arthouse film, *Arrival*'s deeper story is far more profound than detailing the coming apocalypse. Unfolding slowly and heartbreakingly, *Arrival* is a sci-fi film about time and the choices we make in service of love. * *

**Director:** Denis Villeneuve

**Cast: **Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg, Tzi Ma

Bumblebee (2018)

Bumblebee (voice: Dylan O'Brien) in 'Bumblebee'

Bumblebee (voice: Dylan O'Brien) in 'Bumblebee'. Paramount Pictures

The first film in the *Transformers* universe to be centered around a teenage girl's perspective, 2018's *Bumblebee* is the sixth installment in the long-running sci-fi action franchise. Set in California in 1987, the movie tells the story of Bumblebee, an Autobot who is sent to Earth by Optimus Prime to defend the planet from the Decepticons. After suffering major injuries during a battle, Bumblebee transforms into a Volkswagen Beetle — only to be discovered and repaired by Charlie Watson (Hailee Steinfeld), a teenager still reeling from the recent death of her father.

Laden with fun '80s pop culture references and offering more humor and heart than previous chapters of the franchise, *Bumblebee *is half sci-fi film, half buddy cop comedy between a teen and a transformer.

Where to watch *Bumblebee*: Paramount+

**EW grade: **B+

**Director: **Travis Knight

**Cast: **Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., John Ortiz, Jason Drucker

Interstellar (2014)

Matthew McConaughey as Cooper in 'Interstellar'

In the year 2067, the question of "what are we going to eat tonight" becomes slightly more pressing as a famine sweeps the globe. Determined to cast a wider net in humanity's search for sustenance, a group of NASA scientists travel to space to investigate three planets that could potentially prove hospitable for humans.

A film by Christopher Nolan, *Interstellar* is a sci-fi drama that doubles as a love story between a father (Matthew McConaughey) and his daughter (played at different points by Mackenzie Foy, Jessica Chastain, and Ellen Burstyn). In the grand Nolan tradition, *Interstellar* fools around with time and space, but it's the film's visuals that prove most revelatory. "Christopher Nolan would be derelict if he didn't take gargantuan risks," EW's reviewer writes. "It's good for us that he does."

Where to watch *Interstellar*: Paramount+

**Director: **Christopher Nolan

**Cast: **Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn

Minority Report (2002)

Tom Cruise as Chief John Anderton and Samantha Morton as Agatha in 'Minority Report'

Tom Cruise as Chief John Anderton and Samantha Morton as Agatha in 'Minority Report'. Everett Collection

One of the gold-standard sci-fi action films from the early aughts, *Minority Report* offers everything a genre fan could want: brow furrowing and sick stunts courtesy of star Tom Cruise, fast-moving direction provided by Steven Spielberg, and a moody, ominous audio aesthetic dreamed up by his frequent collaborator, legendary composer John Williams. With these powers combined, the filmmakers invite us to fast-forward to the year 2054, when the country's system of law enforcement has undergone a seismic shift thanks to the introduction of the precrime unit. Relying on visions provided by "pre-cogs," clairvoyant humans who can see murders before they happen, the unit is under orders to arrest potential criminals for crimes they are expected to commit in the future.

Where to watch *Minority Report*: Paramount+

**Director: **Steven Spielberg

**Cast: **Tom Cruise, Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton, Max von Sydow

A Quiet Place (2018)

John Krasinski as Lee Abbott in 'A Quiet Place'

Writer-director-actor John Krasinski's blockbuster follows the Abbott family as they navigate a postapocalyptic world where sound-motivated, bloodthirsty aliens rule. Unlike most modern films, *A Quiet Place** *employs minimal dialogue, preferring to convey story and build tension through the vacuum of silence and ambient noise that serve as the movie's soundtrack.

Well-deserving of its Oscar nomination for Best Sound Editing (and arguably overlooked for nominations in the writing, directing, and acting categories) *A Quiet Place *was a critical hit when it premiered in 2018, prompting the releases of *A Quiet Place Part II* in 2021, and *A Quiet Place: Day One* in 2024.

Where to watch *A Quiet Place*: Paramount+

**EW grade: **B+

**Director: **John Krasinski

**Cast: **John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe, Cade Woodward

A Quiet Place Part II (2020)

Noah Jupe as Marcus Abbott, Millicent Simmonds as Regan Abbott, and Emily Blunt as Evelyn Abbott in 'A Quiet Place Part II'

Noah Jupe as Marcus Abbott, Millicent Simmonds as Regan Abbott, and Emily Blunt as Evelyn Abbott in 'A Quiet Place Part II'. Jonny Cournoyer/Paramount

This 2020 sequel picks up where the original (see above) left off with Evelyn Abbott (Emily Blunt), her daughter Regan (Millicent Simmonds) — whose deafness has given the family an advantage in surviving — and Regan's two brothers trying to move on from their lost loved ones and destroyed home, while attempting to make contact with other survivors. Introducing new characters played by Cillian Murphy, Djimon Hounsou, and Okieriete Onaodowan, *A Quiet Place Part II* moves the story forward, while expanding the universe to make room in the franchise for a threequel.

Rosemary's Baby (1968)

One of the genre's pioneering works, *Rosemary's Baby* stars Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes as Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse, a young New York City couple who move into a storied building rumored to have ties to the occult. Disconcerted by the apartment's elderly tenants and their overt interest in her pregnancy, Rosemary soon becomes convinced that her neighbors are using her as a Satanic surrogate and intend to include her unborn child in their demonic rituals.

Based on the 1967 novel by the same name, *Rosemary's Baby* is generally associated with Mia Farrow's acclaimed performance as a fragile and unraveling pregnant woman trapped in a nightmare (not to mention her era-defining pixie haircut), but it's Ruth Gordon (*Harold and Maude*) who took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.    ****Where to watch *Rosemary's Baby*: Paramount+

Smile (2022)

Frowning gives you lines, but grinning can be deadly. Enter *Smile*, a supernatural horror film starring Sosie Bacon as a clinical psychiatrist named Rose Cotter, who works in a public hospital and witnesses a patient's baffling suicide. Soon after, Rose finds herself haunted by an entity that takes control of people and forces them to complete horrifying acts while smiling like maniacs.

Scaredy cats need not apply: *Smile *offers up "sadistic jump scares" and a story so freaky, EW's critic warns "you might need a bucket of bleach (and several hours of TikTok kitten videos) to cleanse your brainpan afterward." Featuring some of the most effective movie marketing in recent history, *Smile *will not put a grin on your face, but it will strike fear in your heart.

Star Trek (2009)

Zachary Quinto as Spock and Chris Pine as James T. Kirk in 'Star Trek'

Zachary Quinto as Spock and Chris Pine as James T. Kirk in 'Star Trek'.

Paramount Pictures

In the late 2000s, J.J. Abrams went where no man has gone before by directing the first film in a *Star Trek* prequel trilogy. Non-trekkies might find the sheer vastness of the franchise overwhelming — currently, it includes 12 television shows, beginning with *Star Trek: The Original Series* (1966–1969), and 13 films — but given that 2009's *Star Trek *serves as an origin story for some of the main characters, newbies will find it to be a solid entrée into the world. Set in 2233, Abrams' film follows the evolution of James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and his fellow USS *Enterprise* crew members as they battle a future version of Nero (Eric Bana), a vengeful Romulan with a vendetta against their captain.

While reviewing *Super 8* in 2011, EW's critic gave the film an A, writing "Loving, playful, and spectacularly well made, *Super *8 is easily the best summer movie of the year — of many years." J.J. Abrams' love letter to '80s sci-fi movies, the film tells the story of a grieving 14-year-old trying to make a zombie movie with some friends, only to accidentally witness a train accident that is not quite what it appears.

A nostalgic, sweet picture that pays homage to youthful summers of yore, first loves, and military secrets accidentally captured by precocious, small-town children, *Super 8* is one of those special movies that rarely gets made anymore. If you like films like *E.T.* and *Stand by Me*, then you need to add *Super 8* to your must-watch list.

Where to watch *Super 8*: Paramount+

**EW grade: **A

Total Recall (1990)

Arnold Schwarzenegger as Douglas Quaid in 'Total Recall'

TriStar Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection

Director Paul Verhoeven followed the success of his 1987 classic *RoboCop* with *Total Recall*, a big budget, effects-heavy dystopian sci-fi action movie that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as a construction worker in the future whose innocent wish to visit a colonized Mars via memory implant goes violently awry. Turns out, he's already been there and his brain can't tell the difference. As the confused but determined Douglas Quaid, Schwarzenegger has plenty of chances to go full Action Hero, taking down 10 guys in a metro station attack, and, in a thrilling extended fight sequence, squaring off against Sharon Stone when his supposed wife is revealed to be an agent of the evil forces looking to take over Mars for themselves.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)

Shia LaBeouf as Sam Witwicky in 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon'

Shia LaBeouf as Sam Witwicky in 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon'. Everett Collection

Michael Bay is back with the third film in the *Transformers* franchise, and this time he's shooting for the moon. As always, it's Autobots facing off against Decepticons in a battle for dominance over Earth, with Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) along for the ride. Megan Fox has moved on, and Sam has a new girlfriend, Carly (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley), along with some space-age secrets with which to contend. With an impressive ensemble cast and plot points that involve everything from Buzz Aldrin to "Space Bridges," *Transformers: Dark of the Moon* moves fast and covers a lot of ground. While not the strongest of all the *Transformer* movies, the film is still a great way to satisfy your Autobot cravings.

Paramount/Courtesy Everett

The war continues in *Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen*, the second film in the *Transformers* franchise. And this time, Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) and crew are in college — when they're not battling Decepticons. With a script that travels from the East Coast Ivy League to the pyramids in Egypt, *Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen* is the kind of globe-trotting, science fiction action film that makes for an ideal summer blockbuster, even if you're watching it on your couch at home. You don't need to have watched the first film to enjoy the second, but a viewing of the original does help demonstrate how much the franchise evolved in two years.

War of the Worlds (2005)

Tom Cruise as Ray Ferrier and Dakota Fanning as Rachel Ferrier in 'War of the Worlds'

Tom Cruise as Ray Ferrier and Dakota Fanning as Rachel Ferrier in 'War of the Worlds'.

The aliens are coming and they do not hold humans in high regard. An action-adventure film adapted from H.G. Wells' 19th-century science fiction novel, *War of the Worlds* stars Tom Cruise as an estranged father of two who is determined to help his kids survive an alien invasion, and reunite them with their mother.

A Steven Spielberg-directed attack-of-the-aliens disaster film rife with lightning bolts, property damage, and the constant threat of annihilation, *War of the Worlds* doesn't quite incite the same level of panic as the eponymous 1938 radio broadcast that convinced listeners that Martians were actually invading. But that doesn't mean Spielberg doesn't know how to tap into the human fear of an extinction event, and mine that terror for all it's worth.

Where to watch *War of the Worlds*: Paramount+******Director: **Steven Spielberg

**Cast: **Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Miranda Otto, Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman

World War Z (2013)

Brad Pitt as Gerald Lane, Abigail Hargrove as Rachel Lane, and Mireille Enos as Karen Lane in 'World War Z'.

Jaap Buitendijk/Paramount Pictures

When you take away a zombie's one weakness — its tendency toward slow-motion movement — you get *World War Z*, a film in which the villains don't so much stagger as swarm. Brad Pitt stars as Gerry Lane, a former U.N. Investigator with the skills and connections necessary to save his wife and two young daughters — but only if he agrees to identify the origin of the outbreak, and help humanity survive a planet-wide zombie apocalypse.

EW says the film may be "the most entertaining and accomplished zombie thriller since George A. Romero's *Dawn of the Dead*," and if that's not incentive enough, you get to see Pitt in a role that has him exemplifying "feral grace under pressure."

Where to watch *World War Z*: Paramount+

**EW grade:** A–

**Director:** Marc Forster

**Cast: **Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, James Badge Dale

There's something about a good thriller that's unlike any other film-watching experience. The sometimes unbearable suspense of wondering what will happen next can propel even the most mediocre thriller movies forward, and the best ones can use that tension to also probe deep into the psyches of our protagonists.

Fortunately, streaming giant Hulu has dozens of compelling thrillers readily available to watch now. Ahead, we've rounded up our picks for the 12 best thrillers on the streamer, including action classics like *Die Hard* (1988), psychological mind-benders like *Black Swan* (2010), and newer favorites like *Longlegs* (2024).

Black Swan (2010)

Natalie Portman as Nina Sayers in 'Black Swan'

A psychological thriller like no other, *Black Swan* is so twisted that the viewer becomes almost as mentally confused as Nina (Natalie Portman), a ballerina at war with the dark and light sides of herself. Since it's a Darren Aronofsky film, we know it's not destined to be feel-good; instead, *Black Swan* is a fascinating exploration of personality under pressure. Portman gives an Oscar-winning performance, juxtaposing Nina's innocent exterior with her ambitious attempts to channel her internal darkness to play the Black Swan in *Swan Lake*. These efforts put Nina's mental state in great peril, and Aronofsky manages to craft a gorgeous, horrific, psychological descent against the regimented, sublime backdrop of ballet. —*Gwen Ihnat*

What happens when a detective and a murder suspect find themselves inexorably drawn to each other? Auteur director Park Chan-wook makes a meal of this concept in *Decision to Leave*, a romantic thriller in which a detective (Park Hae-il) develops an obsession with an enigmatic widow (Tang Wei) whose husband recently fell to his death, severely complicating the investigation. EW's critic praises *Decision to Leave* for its "surreal cinematic flourishes and breezy dollops of dark humor," trademarks of director Park's filmography that nonetheless feel fresh due to his restrained yet evocative approach. —*Kevin Jacobsen*

Where to watch *Decision to Leave*: Hulu

**EW grade:** B+

**Director:** Park Chan-wook

**Cast:** Tang Wei, Park Hae-il

Die Hard (1988)

Bruce Willis as John McClane in 'Die Hard'

Bruce Willis as John McClane in 'Die Hard'. Twentieth Century Fox

Fans have debated whether *Die Hard* is a Christmas movie for more than three decades, but it's an agreed-upon fact that the film launched one of the most beloved action thriller franchises of all time. The first of five installments introduces audiences to the series' hero — New York police officer John McClane (Bruce Willis) — who has traveled to Los Angeles hoping to rekindle a romance with his estranged wife, Holly. After German terrorists — led by the nefarious Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) — take control of the building where Holly's company's Christmas party is being held, holding her and her co-workers hostage, McClane must work to take down the terrorists from the inside to save his family.

The world has *Die Hard* to thank for elevating both Willis' and Rickman's careers, and while Willis' 2022 retirement brought an end to the franchise, *Die Hard* will always be remembered as the movie that helped cement Willis' legacy as one of the foremost action stars of all time. —*Ilana Gordon*

Where to watch *Die Hard*: Hulu

**Director:** John McTiernan

**Cast:** Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman, Alexander Godunov, Bonnie Bedelia

Eileen (2023)

Thomasin McKenzie as Eileen Dunlop and Anne Hathaway as Rebecca Saint John in 'Eileen'

Thomasin McKenzie as Eileen Dunlop and Anne Hathaway as Rebecca Saint John in 'Eileen'.

This spellbinding psychological thriller unfolds like a pulpy mystery novel, where the dynamic between the characters is even more intriguing than the mystery. Thomasin McKenzie plays the title character, a meek secretary at a prison who finds herself bewitched by the arrival of Rebecca (Anne Hathaway), a glamorous psychologist (think Cate Blanchett in *Carol*) who interviews a troubled inmate. The two women develop a connection, and, after Rebecca gets Eileen involved in the case she's working on, we see just how far the latter is willing to go to help the former. EW's critic calls *Eileen* "a marvelously uneasy thriller soaked in simmering eroticism, Hitchcockian swivels, and wintry." —*K.J.*

Where to watch *Eileen*: Hulu

**EW grade:** A–

**Director:** William Oldroyd

**Cast:** Thomasin McKenzie, Anne Hathaway, Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland, Owen Teague

Femme (2024)

Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as Jules in 'Femme'

Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as Jules in 'Femme'.

This underseen British thriller explores heavy topics like homophobia, the cost of revenge, and the complex relationship between attacker and victim. Nathan Stewart-Jarrett plays Jules, a drag performer who endures a violent assault by a stranger named Preston (George MacKay). Three months later, he encounters Preston again at a gay bathhouse — though Preston doesn't recognize Jules out of his drag makeup and invites him back to his apartment. Thus begins a thorny relationship in which Jules plots vengeance, though their dynamic soon takes a fascinating turn. With two superbly committed performances from Stewart-Jarrett and MacKay, *Femme* tells a fascinatingly complicated story with surprising nuance. —*K.J.*

Where to watch *Femme*: Hulu

**Directors:** Sam H. Freeman, Ng Choon Ping

**Cast:** Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, George MacKay, Aaron Heffernan, John McCrea, Asha Reid

Fresh (2022)

Sebastian Stan as Steve in 'Fresh'

Sebastian Stan as Steve in 'Fresh'. Searchlight Pictures

Given that the title sequence doesn't begin until 30 minutes into the film, *Fresh* may start out like a rom-com, right down to the meet-cute in a grocery store. But by the time you're actually invested in the apparently burgeoning romance between the equally excellent Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan as Noa and Steve, things take a turn for the markedly sinister as Noa's dream guy transforms into something quite different. EW's critic deems *Fresh *"a clever, gory metaphor for the seemingly endless horrors of modern romance rooted in a plot twist just outrageous enough to plausibly be true." To say anything else would spoil the fun, so we'll just say that the film's title is more than apt. *—G.I.*

Where to watch *Fresh*: Hulu

**Director: **Mimi Cave

**Cast: **Daisy Edgar-Jones, Sebastian Stan, Jonica T. Gibbs, Charlotte Le Bon, Andrea Bang

Based on Andreas Malm's controversial book of the same name, *How to Blow Up a Pipeline* follows a group of young climate activists who plan to destroy an oil pipeline in West Texas to prompt more immediate action in addressing the climate crisis. One wrong step could risk being caught by authorities, or even putting themselves in harm's way. Unfolding with the tension of a heist movie, the film doesn't just entertain as an action thriller but also gives valid reasons as to what led each activist to take such drastic measures in the hope of saving the planet. The film also raises questions about whether such actions are effective in prompting change, while presenting its characters as complex humans. *—K.J.*

Longlegs (2024)

Nicolas Cage as Longlegs in 'Longlegs'

Nicolas Cage as Longlegs in 'Longlegs'.

Nicolas Cage takes a big swing (arguably bigger than usual) in this quietly haunting horror-thriller from Osgood Perkins (son of *Psycho* star Anthony Perkins). The go-for-broke actor plays a mysterious serial killer known only as "Longlegs," who is involved in a string of murder-suicides dating back decades. FBI agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) investigates and eventually discovers a disturbing secret about her own connection to the case. "Perkins collects his simple component parts and somehow transforms this into such an unnerving film," writes EW's critic. "*Longlegs *is definitely a step above the others." —*K.J.*

Where to watch *Longlegs*: Hulu

**Director:** Osgood Perkins

**Cast:** Maika Monroe, Nicolas Cage, Blair Underwood, Alicia Witt

Prey (2022)

Amber Midthunder as Naru in 'Prey'

Amber Midthunder as Naru in 'Prey'. David Bukach/Hulu

The *Predator* monster has terrified audiences for more than 35 years, but in the story's prequel and fifth installment, the tables turn and the monster becomes the prey. The film follows Naru (Amber Midthunder), a Comanche warrior with the heart of a hunter, who seeks to prove her skills and protect her tribe by catching a predator. Professional basketball player-turned-horror star Dane DiLiegro plays the film's eponymous villain and says the story is strong enough to win viewers over, even without its affiliation to the beloved horror franchise.

In an interview, he tells EW, "There just happens to be a Predator involved. Honestly, you could have shot this movie with a different monster and it still probably would have worked." If you're in the market for a solid thriller that still makes time to flesh out its main characters, sink your teeth into *Prey*. *—I.G.*

Where to watch *Prey*: Hulu

**Director: **Dan Trachtenberg

**Cast: **Amber Midthunder, Dane DiLiegro, Dakota Beavers, Michelle Thrush, Harlan Blayne Kytwayhat

Run (2020)

Kiera Allen as Chloe Sherman and Sarah Paulson as Diane Sherman in 'Run'

Kiera Allen as Chloe Sherman and Sarah Paulson as Diane Sherman in 'Run'. Everett Collection

On the surface, Diane (Sarah Paulson) seems like the perfect mother: Her 17-year-old daughter, Chloe (Kiera Allen), was born with health issues, and Diane has devoted her life to homeschooling and taking care of her. But now that Chloe is applying to colleges and on the brink of setting off into the real world, she begins to notice that Diane's love may be masking secrets that Chloe could never dream of. And the more Chloe learns about herself and her mother, the more danger she finds herself in.

A suspenseful psychological horror thriller that deals in themes of parental love, control, and what happens when the umbilical cord is cut too late, *Run *owes its success to the commitment of its stars. Newcomer Allen is a joy to watch, but it's Paulson who, as EW's critic writes, puts a "sweeter face" on depravity. *—I.G.*

Where to watch *Run*: Hulu

**Director:** Aneesh Chaganty

**Cast: **Sarah Paulson, Kiera Allen

Sanctuary (2023)

Margaret Qualley as Rebecca Marin and Christopher Abbott as Hal Porterfield in 'Sanctuary'

Margaret Qualley as Rebecca Marin and Christopher Abbott as Hal Porterfield in 'Sanctuary'.

Neon/Courtesy Everett Collection

Margaret Qualley and Christopher Abbott are the only stars of this taut psychological thriller. Qualley plays Rebecca, a woman interviewing Abbott's Hal at a hotel for a CEO position; as the film soon reveals, however, Rebecca is actually Hal's dominatrix, and this was all part of a carefully planned script. Hal breaks the news to Rebecca that because he's about to inherit his father's company, they have to end their arrangement. This enrages Rebecca, who demands half his new salary, and the pair engage in a battle for control. Unfolding with simmering suspense, *Sanctuary* is a scintillating thriller about sex and power, evoking Steven Soderbergh's *Sex, Lies, and Videotape* (1989), ironically starring Qualley's mother, Andie MacDowell. —*K.J.*

Where to watch *Sanctuary*: Hulu

**Director:** Zachary Wigon

**Cast:** Margaret Qualley, Christopher Abbott

The Sixth Sense (1999)

Bruce Willis as Malcolm Crowe and Haley Joel Osment as Cole Sear in 'The Sixth Sense'

Bruce Willis as Malcolm Crowe and Haley Joel Osment as Cole Sear in 'The Sixth Sense'. Everett Collection

Everyone knows the kid in *The Sixth Sense* can see dead people. Most know the twist at the end. And still, M. Night Shyamalan's horror thriller holds up as a gloriously crafted ghost story anchored by three impeccable performances. Bruce Willis stars as a child psychologist who tries to help young Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment), a troubled boy who sees grisly visions of the dead, with Toni Collette as his desperate mother. The film's strengths lie in narrative momentum, doling out information at just the right pace for maximum impact. "Running the scenes over in your head afterward," writes EW's critic, "uncovers a construction that rewards wide-awake attention." —*K.J.*

Where to watch *The Sixth Sense*: Hulu

**Director:** M. Night Shyamalan

**Cast:** Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment, Toni Collette, Olivia Williams

Things got personal for Dwayne Johnson while filming a pivotal moment in the Mark Kerr biopic *The Smashing Machine*.

In the scene, Mark (Johnson), a UFC fighter and MMA pioneer, has just overdosed and is in the hospital. His friend, Mark Coleman (Ryan Bader), pays him a visit and implores him to go to rehab. Though Johnson's character has had a few private emotional moments in the film to this point, this scene is the first time he's really vulnerable and breaks down in front of anyone else.

To nail the scene, Johnson tells host Gerrad Hall on *The Awardist* podcast about the two things from his own life that inspired him. The first is his own father's addiction. "My dad had an addiction, and I have lived that life where my dad was a fast talker, and he could fast talk his way in and outta things," the actor and wrestler says. "And I like to say that, you know, he quit his addiction in the morning, and by the evening time he quit quitting. You know, that's what addicts do is oftentimes they'll try to lure you in, and the moment they see a little opening that, 'Oh, you're believing my story,' that's it. Hooks are in, and I just wanna get onto the next."

He continues of the scene, "I have lived that, where you hear, and you see Mark in the hospital [going], 'Can you believe these guys? It was so unfair. They're asking me who the president was. And I was just coming through and I was unconscious.'"

The other deeply personal moment Johnson pulled from was seeing his mom in the hospital during her treatment for cancer. "The second half to that, is more — it hurts my heart — is that when my mom was diagnosed with lung cancer, she was diagnosed with stage 3B lung cancer. And when you know those stages, that's not good. You know you gotta have those conversations with your family," he recalls.

Though his mom would go on to make a full recovery, Johnson vividly remembers her first day of treatment and what the doctor said when he came into the room. "She was laying on the hospital bed, and I was kind of standing over her, holding her hand. And then the doctor came in and the doctor, he didn't say, 'Hey, you're gonna be all right.' He said, 'We're gonna take good care of you.'"

Johnson continues, "And I'll never forget it. She pulled the sheets up over her face, and she started, like, really crying. And I had never seen my mom cry like that. In the moment, I looked down and I saw this, like, little girl, you know?"

The *Jungle Cruise* star says he felt like his character probably felt the same way about his own hospital stay, and he brought that into his performance. "I felt like that's probably the last place that Mark Kerr wants to be as well," he says. "Just like it was the last place my mom wanted to be in that moment of vulnerability, and you're looking up at people and you just wanna cover your face. So yeah, that's where I went."**
