"It is with the heaviest heart that I announce the sudden passing of my grandmother. 😢," Jones, 47, wrote alongside a carousel of photos of herself and her grandma. "She passed early in the morning on New Year's Eve at the age of 96. Anyone who knows me, knows that 'Grandmama,' Josephine Vonceal Pace Brown, was my world; my best buddy, my confidante and my unapologetic cheerleader."

In her lengthy tribute, Jones promised to share more stories about how her grandmother influenced her education and supported her dream of becoming a news reporter.

"Her standard of excellence was extremely high—but I was fueled by her belief in me and constant affirmation when she saw me put in the work," she detailed. "What makes our relationship extra special—is the fact that she was so attentive, beyond the backdrop of a highly successful life of her own."

Before Jones was born, Josephine was the first Black woman elected to her local board of education. "She was notoriously *tough* and everyone knew it," she noted. "Her mission—to make education equitable for all children."

Additionally, Jones' grandmother was a pianist and served as the director of the music ministry at her church.

"About 37 years ago, she started a choir called A.R.I.S.E. - African Americans Renewing Interest in Spiritals, Ensemble," the NBC morning show host continued. "I grew up listening to traditional Spirituals… songs passed down from our ancestors… they sang of struggle, love, faith, resilience and triumph. Those hymns are embedded in my DNA. To this day, that choir continues to perform … they've been everywhere over the last year, from Paris to Washington DC."

Jones also shared that her grandfather and his father were among the first Black doctors in their town. "Between the two of them, they exemplified what it means to squeeze the most out of life and to give," she wrote.

To conclude her update, Jones reminded her followers, "Life is so precious, and I can't help but to be changed by the last year and a half. Heaven has gained a new choir director, and our family —a new angel. (She used to play Lou Rawls when I was little, I would giggle as she sang along; this song is for her. 🥹) 🎶🎶."

In the comments, Instagram users flooded Jones with condolences and prayers. One follower shared, "She was an AMAZING woman. I am so very sorry for your loss💔."

Another wrote, "It is easy to see where your beautiful light comes from! Condolences to you and your family. You surely have two beautiful angels. ❤️."

Someone else commented, "Sending deepest condolences and prayers, but oh how blessed you are to have such an amazing grandmother that shaped you and countless others. Such a legacy lives eternally! 🙏🏽❤️🙏🏽😇."

Meanwhile, yet another Instagram user echoed, "Ohhh Sheinelle, my heart goes out to you! What a legacy she left, and I see her in you! 🙏🏽♥️."

The death of Jones' grandmother came seven months after her husband, Uche, died in May after a battle with brain cancer.

Katherine LaNasa and Grant Show have a specific way they keep their 13-year marriage strong.

Speaking exclusively with PEOPLE at the Baby2Baby Gala alongside her husband earlier this year, the Pitt actress, 59, joked about the key to maintaining the couple's relationship after all these years.

"Our key to staying married? … Not getting divorced," she quipped, as Show, 63, echoed her sentiment, adding, "Not breaking up."

LaNasa and the Melrose Place star first crossed paths while filming the HBO drama Big Love back in 2006.

After spending time hanging out and going bowling as just friends, Show previously explained to Redbook that he finally got the courage to ask LaNasa out eight months later.

The couple eventually announced their engagement in July 2012, and they tied the knot at The Oak Grove at Ribbit Tree & Plant Nursery in Topanga, Calif., the following month.

In August 2013, Show told PEOPLE that he and Lanasa — who share 11-year-old daughter Eloise — are "like best friends."

"We just do things together all of the time. She'll do things that are not necessarily things that she wants to do that I like to do — like she'll go play golf with me — and then I'll do things with her, like go shopping. And then you know, you just have to make sure to keep doing it," he explained.

Show also said that he and LaNasa always make sure to prioritize spending quality time together, despite their busy schedules.

"We've made sure that we get together in the same city and in the same bed at least once every 10 days — no more than 10 days go by," he told PEOPLE at the time. "So I'll fly to see her, she'll fly to see me."

LaNasa celebrated her and Show's 13th wedding anniversary earlier this year with a sweet tribute post on Instagram, sharing a collection of black-and-white photos from time they've spent together.

"Great year baby," LaNasa wrote in the post's caption. "Love you to pieces. Happy 13. 🤍."

NEW YORK (AP) — Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews scored twice in the second period against the New York Islanders on Saturday night to pass Mats Sundin and set the franchise record for career goals with 421.

His first goal tied Sundin at 420 when Matthews entered the offensive zone past Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield, shifted the puck from his backhand to his forehand and slid it past goaltender David Rittich at 9:30 of the second period. It tied the score 1-1

Just 7:49 later, Matthews broke the record with his second of the game to put Toronto ahead, burying a cross-ice feed from Bobby McMann on a one-timer.

It gave Matthews his second consecutive multi-goal game after he had a hat trick on Friday night in the Maple Leafs' 6-5 win against Winnipeg. He now has six goals and 10 points in four games since the NHL's Christmas break. He sat out Toronto's 4-0 win against New Jersey on Tuesday night.

Matthews, in his second season as Maple Leafs captain after succeeding teammate John Tavares, is fourth all time in franchise points with 760, trailing Sundin (987), Darryl Sittler (916) and Dave Keon (858).

Sundin, who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012, scored 420 goals in 981 games with the Maple Leafs. Matthews, named to Team USA for the Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina next month, topped his mark in his 664th game.

The Carolina Panthers' destiny is completely out of their hands after a loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday, and one play stands out among the reasons why.

With the Panthers down nine points in the fourth quarter, they reached the Tampa Bay 20-yard line and had a real chance to cut the deficit to less than a field goal. That's when head coach Dave Canales, the team's offensive play-caller, decided to get tricky.

On 1st-and-10, Carolina attempted a flea-flicker with running back Rico Dowdle. Had it worked, quarterback Bryce Young likely would have an open man in or near the end zone. It did not work, though, as the rainy conditions made Dowdle slip and fumble while turning around to pass the ball back.

The Buccaneers recovered and proceeded to shave six minutes off the play clock.

The Panthers scored a touchdown on their next drive, set up by a 40-yard pass from Bryce Young to Tetairoa McMillian that gave Carolina first-and-goal, but the Bucs bled away almost the entire remaining clock on their next drive.

Canales defended the flea-flicker call to reporters after the game, painting it as a justifiable call that simply didn't work:

"It was an aggressive call. Knew they were gonna play us in single high right there, and we just — Rico slipped on the exchange and we took a shot right there. I like the call. I like the opportunity that it presented us right there in the red zone to take advantage of it, and we didn't get that done."

Some fans had issues with Dave Canales' decision to call a flea-flicker in the rain on the verge of the red zone in a potentially division-deciding game for the Panthers. (AP Photo/Jason Behnken) ()

Canales also declined to go into the game's officiating, which had left many Panthers fans unhappy.

However the Panthers lost, there's nothing more to be done. The team's fate will be decided on Sunday in a proxy war between the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans. If the Saints win, the Panthers' season is over. If the Falcons win, they win the NFC South with a record of 8-9 and become the NFC's No. 4 seed.

Former North Texas quarterback Drew Mestemaker has found his new home.

According to multiple reports, Mestemaker committed to follow his former coach, Eric Morris, to Oklahoma State on Saturday, Jan. 3. Mestemaker led North Texas to a 12-2 record during the 2025 college football season and to the American Conference Championship game.

REQUIRED READING: How North Texas QB Drew Mestemaker went from high school backup to nation's leading passer

The redshirt freshman completed 319-of-463 passes (68.9%) for 4,379 yards and 34 touchdowns to nine interceptions in 2025, his first full year as a starter. He concluded his Mean Green career with a 49-47 win in the New Mexico Bowl over San Diego State on Dec. 27.

Mestemaker led the country in passing during the 2025 season and will have a chance to prove himself in his junior season in the Big 12. A big season could catapult his draft stock heading into the 2027 NFL draft.

Morris signed a five-year contract with the Cowboys in late November after the university parted ways with longtime coach Mike Gundy. Morris posted a 22-16 record over three seasons at North Texas, with the third season serving as a major breakout year.

Oklahoma State is coming off a 1-11 record in 2025. The program is just 4-20 over the last two seasons, leading to Gundy's departure.

Landing Mestemaker is a big first step for Morris, who has seen 59 total Oklahoma State players enter the transfer portal since the firing of Gundy and the announcement of his hiring.

The transfer portal opened on Jan. 2 and will remain open until Jan. 16.

Drew Mestemaker stats

Here's a look at Mestemaker's stats in his two collegiate seasons with North Texas:

2024: 30-of-46 passing (65.2%) for 462 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions;

2025: 319-of-463 passes (68.9%) for 4,379 yards, 34 touchdowns and nine interceptions

Drew Mestemaker recruiting rankings

Mestemaker was unranked in the 2024 recruiting class, per 247Sports' Composite ratings, coming out of Austin Vandegrift High in Austin, Texas. He never started a varsity game at quarterback during his high school career.

Following his two successful seasons with the Mean Green, Mestemaker was the No. 3 overall player and quarterback in the 2025 portal rankings.

Jaden Bradley scored 18 points and Koa Peat added 17 to lead No. 1 Arizona to a 97-78 Big 12 victory over Utah on Saturday in Salt Lake City.

Tobe Akawa tallied 18 points and 12 rebounds off the bench to help the Wildcats (14-0, 1-0 Big 12) win their ninth straight game by double figures. Brayden Burries chipped in 17 points and a career-high 11 rebounds while Ivan Kharchenkov added 13 points.

Arizona shot 54% from the floor and went 7 of 18 from 3-point range.

Terrence Brown led Utah (8-6, 0-1) with 26 points and six assists. Keanu Dawes added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Utes while Dom McHenry chipped in 15 points as the Utes lost at home for just the second time this season.

Utah scored the first basket, but never led again as Arizona wasted no time imposing its will on both ends of the court. The Wildcats shot 61% from the floor in the first half and had a 22-12 advantage on the glass before halftime. They also scored 13 points off eight Utah turnovers in that span.

Kharchenkov made back-to-back baskets in the opening minute to ignite a 14-0 run for Arizona. He capped the run with a layup that gave the Wildcats a 14-2 lead at the 16:08 mark. The Utes committed four turnovers in the first four minutes to fall behind by double digits.

Arizona eventually pushed the lead to 27-10 on a rare Akawa 3-pointer.

Utah cut into the deficit before halftime, pulling within 36-28 on a Dawes dunk. The Utes could draw no closer before Arizona sprinted away again. Bradley hit two free throws to spark a 10-0 blitz over 1:57 to restore a 46-28 lead with 4:02 remaining before halftime.

Arizona made six straight baskets to end the first half, punctuated by Burries' steal and layup, to take a 58-39 lead into the locker room.

The Wildcats led by as many as 24 points in the second half.
