Jack Johnson reveals how Kelly Slater helped kickstart his songwriting career

Johnson says in his new documentary SURFILMUSIC that Slater was the first person he ever knew who wrote a song

The documentary premiered at SXSW on March 13

Jack Johnson has a rather unlikely person to thank for the very early days of his music career — his good friend Kelly Slater.

Johnson, 50, and the legendary surfer, 54, are longtime pals. And in his new documentary SURFILMUSIC, which premiered at SXSW on Friday, March 13, Johnson reveals that a fateful move by Slater is what opened the doors to him discovering the joys of songwriting.

In the film, Johnson recalls being in Hawaii with Slater, who brought with him a 4-track tape recorder.

"He would leave the thing at my house and we kind of started learning chords on the guitar at the same time," he says. "I was 14 when I started playing guitar."

The Grammy nominee goes on to tell Slater that he was the first person he ever knew who actually wrote a song.

"At that point I'd just been learning other people's songs," Johnson says. "I hadn't even got to the point where I could think, 'Oh, maybe I'll try writing one.'"

When Slater left Hawaii for Florida at the end of the winter, he left his 4-track behind, much to Johnson's delight.

"I was like, 'Wait a second, he's gone?'" Johnson recalls in the film. "And I just remember thinking the 4-track was still at my house and I was so stoked. That was the beginning for me."

Slater, who is widely regarded as the best professional surfer of all time, has performed multiple times with Johnson at various events, festivals and jam sessions. In September, they teamed up with fellow surfer Rob Machado for "A Pirate Looks at Forty" at the Solento Surf Festival in California.

Johnson and Slater have also worked together on both of Johnson's surf films: Thicker Than Water in 2000, and The September Sessions two years later.

SURFILMUSIC follows Johnson's unlikely career path from aspiring surfer to filmmaker to successful musician.

"Blending rare footage from those formative surf films and Johnson's personal and family archives with present-day reflections, the film weaves together how lived experience, friendship, and exploration shaped the sound and stories behind the music," a press release says.

The film, directed by Emmett Malloy, includes interviews with longtime friends as well as Johnson's wife Kim, whom he married in 2000 and with whom he shares two sons and a daughter.

The musician's most recent album, Meet the Moonlight, came out in 2022.

88 days to the World Cup: Why it pays to be on your best behavior at the global tournament

The countdown to the2026 World Cupis on! Each day ahead of the tournament's return to North America, Yahoo Sports will highlight an insight or moment that showcases just how grand the world's biggest sporting spectacle has become — even beyond the expanded field of this year's global event.

Yahoo Sports

Yellow-card cautions and red-card ejections are typical occurrences in soccer. The game's physicality and intensity make rash tackles and bad decision-making inevitable.

At a World Cup, those moments of poor judgement on the field can carry enormous consequences. Just ask Senegal.

During the 2018 World Cup, Senegal finished group play level with Japan on points (4), goals scored (4) and conceded (4), and goal differential (0). Even their head-to-head meeting ended in a 2-2 draw.

FIFA's group-stage tiebreakers had run out.

The last tiebreaker available before the drawing of lots —yes, that's real— is fair play record, a method that tracks the number of yellow and red cards teams accumulate during the group stage. Teams are docked one point for a yellow card, three points for a player earning two yellow cards in a match, four points for a direct red card, and five points for a yellow followed by direct red card.

Following their three games, Japan had received four yellow cards, two fewer than the six received by Senegal.

That tiny difference sent Japan through to the knockout rounds — where they would bow out in the Round of 16 to Belgium — and left Senegal as the first team in World Cup history eliminated on fair play points.

  • The comedian said she's still deciding on major wedding details, including the venue and whether the event will be small or large

  • Cummings also revealed that she bartered for her engagement ring, trading a vintage car for her dream piece

Whitney Cummingshas revealed the special role her 2-year-old son, Henry, might have in her upcoming wedding to professional skateboarder Chris Cole.

Cummings, who hosted the event, shared details about her upcoming nuptials — including the fact that her son might help give her away.

"He might walk me down the aisle. I don't have a dad," said Cummings, who lost her father in 2013.

While speaking about their wedding at the recent An Unforgettable Evening event, Cummings said that she still has a lot of details to iron out.

"I did also want to have all my girlfriends walking me down the aisle to be like, you're marrying all of us," she added. "Because the biggest thing for me in a man [is] like — sorry to quote the Spice Girls — but you're marrying all my girlfriends."

"But I have too many girlfriends for that. So I'm really trying to figure it out," she added.

Cummings said she and Cole have yet todecide on a venue, and she's still not sure if she wants the celebration to be small and intimate or massive.

"I'm vacillating between getting married at Tokyo Disneyland, like just the two of us, and a thousand people at Dave & Buster's. I am so all over the place," she told PEOPLE.

"I looked at [the California boutique hotel] Madonna Inn. I really like it … It's the most fantastic place I've ever been in my life. It's all pink," she continued.

"Then I'm like, 'Do I do it in ananimal sanctuarybecause I'm an animal person?' But my friends are too annoying. I won't let them around horses. So I'm just trying to figure it out," she continued.

The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? Play now!

As for her bridal look, Cummings said she's "deep in eBay wedding dresses."

"You'd be surprised how many women buy never-worn wedding dresses on eBay. You'll get a wild story and a very inexpensive, never-worn wedding dress. And you're helping out a woman who probably called off her wedding. You can get aVera Wangnever-worn wedding dress for a thousand dollars," she said.

The2 Broke Girlsco-creator also revealed the unconventional way she ended up with her "dream" engagement ring.

"I got a ring fromNikki Reed's collectioncalled Bayou. She let me borrow it for a TV show I did on Fox, and then I was like, 'Oh, I'm not sending it back. So what are my options? Are you taking me to court? It belongs to me now, but I can't afford to pay for it,' " she recalled.

Cummings continued: "She said, 'Okay, just do a photo shoot for the brand' — which was not at all equivalent to what it cost. And I had this '81 Silverado that I bought during the pandemic … And she saw it in my house or my driveway and she was like, 'This is the car I've been wanting forever.' "

"And I was like, 'Great news. It's yours … This is your dream car. This is my dream ring. You can have this car, and we're even.' "

"So I'm kind of into bartering for my wedding," Cummings added.
