Harper's Bazaar Chloë Sevigny The Good Buy

The Good Buyis a podcast fromHarper’s Bazaarin which editors Leah Chernikoff and Lynette Nylander invite celebrities, designers, models, and tastemakers to talk shop: what they buy, where they got it, and why it matters. Come down the fashion rabbit hole and take a peek inside the closets and shopping carts of the world’s most stylish people. Learn how they use style to tell their stories.

If you ask any well-dressed person for their list of style inspirations,Chloë Sevignywill no doubt come up towards the top. A permanent fixture of best dressed lists everywhere, the Academy Award-nominated, Golden Globe-winning actor is perhaps just as synonymous with individual style as she is her body of film work. And with credits ranging fromKids(1995) andAmerican Psycho(2000) toAmerican Horror Story(2012, 2015) andLove & Friendship(2016), that’s saying a lot.

Evolving from a quintessential ’90s It girl and indie film darling to a renowned actor, director, producer, writer, model, anddesigner, Sevigny has carved out her own corner of the entertainment industry—one full of nuanced, complex characters and artistically-driven storytelling.

Her approach to fashion is similar, mixing vintage one-offs with underground designers and the best of luxury labels to create looks that feel fresh, eclectic, and uniquely her. (Consider the look she wore to film this episode ofThe Good Buy: aGiovanna Floresreconstructed sweater selected from the designer’s apartment-slash-studio, Lou Dallas sweatpants, and Maison Margiela booties).

Here, the icon—andHarper’s BazaarMay cover star—joins the podcast to discuss her early red-carpet moments, favorite vintage stores, and the origins of her decades-long relationship with Tabis. Read on for highlights and watch the show in full above.

On being one of the few women in Hollywood without a stylist in her early years:

“I feel like my personal style is very different from my red-carpet style and I feel like they get conflated. So much of my red-carpet [style] that was photographed was [from] a very weird period for me because I wasn’t working with a stylist. I dressed myself. I was working with my publicist who—God bless her soul—worked really hard. She would call in the things in for me. Say I had an event. I would call in a dress or maybe two at most, and if it didn’t fit, I just had to wear it. I just had to show up wearing what came. Now those outfits seem like they were really considered, but a lot of them were fly by night because I had nothing else to wear.”

On working with her current stylist,Haley Wollens:

“We’re very collaborative. In Venice, I wore the YSL with the biker shorts. We were working with the house, maybe trying to collaborate on something custom, so we were looking at that neckline and I was like, ‘Well has anyone worn that actual thing? Because it’s so great.’ And then I was like, ‘I think I should just wear that,’ and Haley was like, ‘Okay!’ We send pictures back and forth and it’s very collaborative. She’s not showing up with a rack—I wish she was[laughs].”

"After The Hunt" Red Carpet - The 82nd Venice International Film Festival

“We’re very scrappy. She’s too busy; she doesn’t do celebrity [styling]. She’s like, ‘I can’t do celebrity the way other people do celebrity so we’re gonna do it like this, and if you’re okay with it...’ I’m very grateful for her.”

On where she finds inspiration:

“AtOPEN24HRS, they often will showcase new designers that I have never heard of before. [And from] Haley and other stylists that I follow, I’ll hear about young designers, emerging designers. I can’t say there’s a mood board, but I’m very inspired by other stylists, like Melanie Ward and Jane How. I just feel like they just have an innatesomethingand they’re also looking at stuff all the time and posting interesting stuff. There’s a lot of archival pages I also follow on Instagram. I’ll see something, like some old picture of Diane Keaton in a strappy sandal with a sock at the Oscars, and I’m like, ‘I want to wear a strappy sandal with a sock.’”

On costume design in films:

“I have a really hard time with costume designers. I feel like fittings are just challenging. You’re in bad lighting and you have to be naked in front of people and it’s a very vulnerable position to be in. One would think that I really enjoy that part of filmmaking, but I don’t. I love them and respect them, but I have some trust issues.

“You have to give yourself over as an actor, and I’d be like, ‘Well, musicians don’t have to do that!’ I was always frustrated by that. I think a lot of actors love that aspect but for me it’s not my favorite part. I love being on set, I love creating characters, obviously I love acting and all the relationships you make. And learning—deep-diving into whatever period or subject you’re doing is endlessly fascinating. It’s such a gift to be able to do that for a living, but oddly the fashion side is not my favorite.”

Shop Chloë’s Good Buys

HER FIRST BUY:

“I was very into shopping from age 5. My mom was a thrifter, so we would go to all the local church-run, community-based thrift stores. I would buy Laura Ashley and Ralph Lauren and Asprey. I then slowly became more alternative and would scour those for interesting things, but then, in the ’90s I became obsessed with Margiela. I turned 18 and I wanted my first pair of Tabis and that was my first big, high-fashion purchase. My parents went halvsies with me and I bought them at If in Soho which is still there. That was a really defining, changing moment.”

HER REGRET BUY:

“I regret wearing certain things, but I don’t know if I have any purchase regrets. But sometimes I’ll go big on a winter coat and be like, ‘Ugh that’s a lot of money. It’s so heavy. Why did I buy such a heavy coat?’ I love buying at Margiela, Simone Rocha, and Miu Miu.”

HER REPEAT BUY:

“There’s always a denim quest. August Barron is doing some fun denim, I’ve been getting their denim. The early Vetements denim is really good; some of the Pieter Mulier Alaïa denim was really exciting. So jeans. Also loafers. And Tabis—all different kinds.”

HER DREAM BUY:

“I’m really into Artisanal Margiela, to sound like an asshole. I’m always hounding the people atByronesquebecause they find that stuff—the Martin [years], some of the early [pieces]. They had this inside-out, deconstructed coat that they showed in New York recently and the price tag was just[sighs]… I was like, ‘Do you want to trade?’”

HER MOST RECENT GOOD BUY:

“Other than the Giovanna and August Barron denim, some Hunza G bikinis. They sent me the little gingham dress and I was like, ‘Well, now I need the bikini.’ There’s this T-shirt dealer in L.A.,Addicted to Rags, who has a lot of good T-shirts and I bought some. I bought a James Cagney T-shirt from the ’70s. I love Hollywood T-shirts. Any actors, actresses? Send them my way.”

Spirit Airlines said that it has "started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately" after talks with the federal government over a $500 million rescue deal stalled.

Spirit's final flight was Flight 1833, which travelled from Detroit to Dallas and landed early Saturday morning just after midnight. The airline said it flew more than 50,000 passengers over the past day and is working to get more than 1,300 crew safely home to their bases.

A spokesperson for Spirit also said the majority of the airline's employees found out about the closure primarily through media reports that they were about to lose their jobs.

Airlines reduce, cap fares for Spirit travelers looking to rebook canceled flights

The airline was scheduled to operate 277 flights Saturday, according to data from Airline Data Inc., which have now all been cancelled.

"To our Guests: all flights have been cancelled, and customer service is no longer available," Spirit said in a statement on its website. "We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 34 years and had hoped to serve our Guests for many years to come."

The Wall Street Journal first reported on Friday that Spirit was preparing to shut down operations as of Saturday.

On Friday afternoon, President Donald Trump said an announcement about the airline rescue deal was possible.

When asked if the administration had decided against bailing out Spirit Airlines, Trump told reporters on Friday, "I guess we're looking at it. If we could do it, we do it, but only if it's a good deal."

"No institution's been able to do it," he continued. "I said 'I'd like to save the jobs,' but we'll have an announcement sometime today. We gave them, we gave them a final proposal."

When asked by ABC News' Morgan Norwood on Saturday why a potential government bailout deal failed, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said it was a "creditor issue."

He said many ideas of how the federal government could step in and help Spirit were floated, and efforts were made by Trump to finalize a deal.

"In the end, this was a creditor issue," Duffy said at a press conference held at Newark Liberty International Airport. "Again, they have the final say of whether they want to do a deal with the government. But also, from the government's perspective, we oftentimes don't have a half a billion dollars laying around in a Spirit account that we can put into a bailout of an airline."

Adam Gray/Bloomberg via Getty Images - PHOTO: Sean Duffy, Secretary of Transportation, speaks during a news conference in Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in Newark, New Jersey, on May 2, 2026.

Duffy criticized and blamed the Biden administration for blocking Spirit's merger with JetBlue calling it a "massive mistake" and saying the two airlines should have been allowed to merge.

He further added that high jet fuel prices weren't the sole contributor to the Spirit's end as it had already been struggling and battling bankruptcy prior to the start of the Iran war.

At the time, the Biden administration said it blocked the merger because the deal would reduce competition and increase fares for customers.

Duffy said Spirit has the money in reserve funds to refund travelers who booked tickets before the airline ceased operations earlier this morning.

"If you bought a ticket and hadn't flown that ticket yet, the dollars that you used to buy the ticket, those are held in reserve by Spirit Airlines," Duffy said. "And so that money is there, and so refunds will flow to the original form of payment for those who had booked a ticket. So yeah, we feel very comfortable that you will get a refund for the portion of the flight that you didn't fly."

ABC News has reached out to the White House for additional comment.

"Spirit is operating as usual," an airline spokesperson had said in a statement earlier Friday before the release of its latest statement announcing the winding down of operations.

Other airlines have responded to the news, saying they will be ready to help stranded passengers in the event that Spirit shuts down.

The Department of Transportation announced that majority of the airlines will be capping tickets prices for Spirit travelers who need to rebook their cancelled flights, and some carriers have even reduced fares on high volume routes where Spirit used to operate.

American Airlines told ABC News it will offer fare caps on main cabin tickets for routes they share with Spirit.

Similarly, United Airlines said they're "preparing to support Spirit customers in the event of a shut down."

"We are ready to support customers who may be impacted if Spirit Airlines ceases operations, with a focus on helping people continue their travel plans with low-fare options," Frontier Airlines posted Friday on X.

ABC News previously reported that Spirit could run out of the cash it needs to keep operating within days, not weeks, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Spirit filed for bankruptcy for the second time last August -- having previously filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November 2024 -- to restructure financially and "reduce its cost structure," with hopes of emerging from Chapter 11 by the spring or summer of 2026.

The soaring price of jet fuel amid the ongoing war in Iran has had widespread impact on airlines and travel expert Katy Nastro, of airfare monitoring site Going, previously told ABC News that Spirit could be out of time to try and turn things around.

"It's never a good sign to file bankruptcy to begin with, but a second within six months, even worse," Nastro said. "Spirit suggested that they were going to be able to come out of bankruptcy this time by the spring. We're in the spring now, we have higher jet fuel prices -- this is a recipe for disaster for them."

What travelers about Spirit Airlines shutting down

Bradley Akubuiro, a crisis expert and former Boeing spokesperson, told ABC News that losing a budget airline like Spirit will raise the floor on airfares.

"Frontier, Allegiant, and Breeze are still flying, but Spirit was the biggest, and in the markets it dominated -- Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, a lot of the Caribbean -- there isn't another carrier ready to backfill at the same price tomorrow," he explained. "The pain isn't immediate. It's structural. A fare that used to be $89 is $140 six months from now, and most consumers won't connect the two."

When airlines liquidate, they immediately cease operations without notice, which means that passengers will be stranded and employees will not show up to work.

Spirit Airlines is telling travelers to not go to the airport as all flights have been cancelled and that they will automatically issue refunds for any flights purchased through Spirit with a credit or debit card to the original form of payment. The airline said that guests who booked flights via a travel agent should contact the travel agent directly to request a refund.

Compensation for people who booked flights using any other methods, including a voucher, credit or Free Spirit points, will be determined at a later date through the bankruptcy process, the airline said.

"Unfortunately, despite the Company's efforts, the recent material increase in oil prices and other pressures on the business have significantly impacted Spirit's financial outlook," the airline said in its statement. "With no additional funding available to the Company, Spirit had no choice but to begin this wind-down."

United Airlines announced Saturday morning that for the next two weeks, customers who were booked to travel on Spirit can get one way ticket on United flights from most cities where Spirit previously operated, including Atlanta, Chicago, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, Newark, New Orleans and Orlando.

The airline says it has capped most of its fares at $199, though exceptions apply, with longer flights not priced higher than $299. Travelers will need to enter their Spirit confirmation number and verify they were scheduled to travel between May 2 through May 16 in order to be qualify for these special fares.

American Airlines has also launched a website which displays rescue fares to and from a range of domestic and international destinations, so those scheduled to travel with Spirit on those routes can rebook their travel with American.

The airline says it's also working to add additional capacity, like flying bigger planes and adding more flights on routes where Spirit used to fly, to accommodate as many passengers as possible. American says it operates at majority of the operates and routes Spirit used to serve at.

There is generally no airline assistance when it comes to helping stranded passengers after an airline shuts down operations.

For any ticketed passengers scheduled to fly Spirit or already in the middle of their trip, below are some tips from travel experts on how to navigate the situation.

Don't immediately cancel your flight, Nastro advised, adding that travelers who cancel forfeit their right to a refund. And make sure to keep all records and receipts.

If you booked with a credit card, you can dispute the charge with your credit card company and likely get the money back.

There is less protection if you booked with a debit card, but you can still contact your company to see if you can get reimbursed.

If you have travel insurance, she reminded customers to read the fine print as not all of them cover this type of scenario.

Per the Department of Transportation, customers could consider filing a proof of claim in the bankruptcy proceeding to try and get a partial refund, but the claim will be considered along with all the other creditors that the airline owes money to and you may only get a small portion of your money back.

If you're stranded, check options with other airlines that might be able to offer relief flights, fare caps or emergency fares, like they would do after a big weather event.

Jockey Mike Smith is 59, which has not escaped the attention of his colleagues.

Some of them call him grandpa, according to Smith.

“I get it all, man,’’ he said, but added, “At my age, I'm still doing the things I was doing when I was 30, man. It's crazy.’’

Smith, a two-time winner in the Kentucky Derby, will be in position to become the oldest jockey to win the race Saturday, May 2 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

The late Willie Shoemaker was 54 when he rode Ferdinand to victory in the 1986 Kentucky Derby and he remains the oldest jockey to win the race. Smith, who was 52 when he won the race in 2018, is no long shot to break Shoemaker’s record.

Smith will be riding So Happy, who’s 7-1. Trainer Mark Glatt could have chosen a talented jockey half Smith’s age, but apparently, it was never a consideration with the horse and Smith based in Southern California. Smith also happens to be a Hall-of-Famer.

Kentucky Derby contender: So Happy is the Kentucky Derby horse worth cheering for this year

“He keeps himself in prime condition,’’ Glatt said. “And especially in a race like the Derby, how do you replace the experience that a rider like Mike Smith has?’’

Smith is set to ride in the “Run for the Roses’’ for a record 29th time, and he is familiar with the winner’s circle.

In 2005, he won the Kentucky Derby on 50-1 longshot Giacomo.

In 2018, he won on Justify and went on to win the Triple Crown.

“You're always excited to make it to the Derby, especially when you make it with one that's really a true contender,’’ Smith said. “And I think this horse showed… in the Santa Anita Derby that not only is he going, but he actually has a big chance to win it all. He really does.’’

So Happy went off at 38-1 in its racing debut and won. Since then, he has raced three more times, placing third once and winning twice – including the Santa Anita Derby in a race that earned the horse a spot in the Derby.

“I think we’re just starting to see the best of him,’’ Smith said.

Could the same be said for the 59-year-old jockey?

Why Ty Simpson's first 2 months with Rams will be important as he teams up with Matthew Stafford

Jori EpsteinFri, May 1, 2026 at 3:05 PM UTC

When Tua Tagovailoa signed with the Atlanta Falcons, and when Justin Fields was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, a similar narrative of opportunity unfolded.

The teams’ incumbent quarterbacks, Michael Penix Jr. and Patrick Mahomes respectively, are recovering from late-season ACL tears. Each is aiming to return by Week 1 but in serious question for offseason participation.

So Tagovailoa and Fields likely await acclimation to new teammates not only in the locker room and meetings. Their onboarding to new schematic principles and terminology will likely not be confined to mental reps.

Tagovailoa and Fields should each get plenty of offseason and preseason snaps, including reps with the starters.

Ty Simpson, selected 13th overall by the Los Angeles Rams last week in the NFL Draft, could find a similar opening.

The Los Angeles Rams do not have an injured quarterback in the driver’s seat. And reigning MVP Matthew Stafford is not fighting to retain his role after the Rams selected the Alabama quarterback with their first pick of the 2026 NFL Draft.

But Stafford’s preseason limitations due to an aggravated disc in his back last summer, and his subsequent MVP campaign, taught the Rams a lesson.

Expect them to limit the 38-year-old’s offseason and preseason work yet again.

And thus expect Simpson to have a chance to acclimate on the field soon.

Rams general manager Les Snead spoke to that reality last month at the league’s annual meetings in a conversation with Yahoo Sports about the challenges of investing in the immediate future while planning a longer-term outlook.

Los Angeles is realistic, Snead said, that when “you go through a quarterback transition, that’s a cliff.” The club hopes managing Stafford in the offseason can firstly support his late-season performance and secondarily support the depth chart’s development for their post-Stafford era.

“The way we manage Matthew, at least our backup QB is going to get more reps,” Snead told Yahoo Sports on March 30. “But it's going to come during OTAs. It's going to come during some portions of training camp. And then once the season starts, so that's the tough part.”

Without 2025 Rams QB2 Jimmy Garoppolo in the fold, Simpson will compete with 2023 fourth-round pick Stetson Bennett to allocate snaps. Bennett may have a leg up on understanding the offense at first — but head coach Sean McVay reiterated before the draft that “Stetson is considered a backup” compared to how he viewed Garoppolo as a starting quarterback.

It strains credulity to think the Rams would select Simpson 13th overall without a belief Simpson will be, if not already is, a starter. And thus, opportunity during Stafford’s cautionary period awaits.

“The most important thing is, when you’re going into Year 18, how do we keep you as physically, emotionally and mentally, basically as fresh as possible?” McVay said in a news conference. “[Using our other quarterbacks] allows us to operate in a manner where you're saying, ‘All right, hey, what's the priority? How do we keep our guy feeling as good as possible?’

“And being able to do that without allowing it to fall off too much.”

‘There's moments where I think he's better than Fernando [Mendoza]’

Creating a succession plan for any contributor, much less an MVP- and Super Bowl-winning quarterback, is a tricky balancing act.

But the Rams’ belief in their Super Bowl-contending legitimacy fuels their belief that a potentially strong class of 2027 first-round quarterbacks will be out of reach by the time Los Angeles gets onto the draft board next year (they hope to pick 32nd). The most successful quarterback currently set to hit free agency in 2027 is Baker Mayfield, whom the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will likely extend before then.

All of this made the path to a Stafford successor next year murky. And while Stafford has confirmed he’ll play in 2026, his status in 2027 and beyond remains to be seen.

Add to that a young, talented corps that includes Puka Nacua, Jared Verse, Kobie Turner, Byron Young and Braden Fiske? The Rams will have choices to make on second contracts. Consider that 2025 first overall pick Cam Ward received a four-year, $48.8 million deal that averages $12.2 million per year (the division of cap hits is malleable). Compare that to the veteran quarterback market, where 10 quarterbacks have received contracts averaging more than $50 million per season? The Rams want to extend their Super Bowl window by positioning themselves financially to keep their young stars beyond Stafford’s era.

So drafting Simpson, the Rams believed, has the potential to answer a major question mark as soon as 2027. The Rams are also not naive enough to feel sure they won’t need Simpson in 2026.

“Sometimes you might take someone and it's a little bit for the future and you have an unforeseen attrition due to injury, and all of a sudden, the delayed becomes the immediate,” Snead told reporters in a pre-draft news conference. “So you're always balancing that with every pick. And I think, as you mentioned, that's subjective on where our roster ranks and things like that.”

An AFC talent evaluator told Yahoo Sports they graded Simpson similarly to Bo Nix coming out. The two quarterbacks’ volume of experience differs drastically — Nix started a massive 61 games in college, compared to Simpson’s 15 — but Simpson’s best moments this past season reflected NFL-caliber play.

“There's enough really good film of him this year,” the AFC evaluator said. “There's moments where I think he's better than Fernando [Mendoza] when I watch Fernando.”

Simpson ranked third among quarterbacks on Yahoo Sports’ 2026 NFL Draft consensus big board from draft experts Nate Tice and Charles McDonald. But he ranked as their 55th prospect overall, compared to Mendoza at second overall and LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier at 34.

Will that be enough to earn Simpson the second-string snaps behind Stafford, and the first-team snaps when he’s on veteran mandatory rest? Snead spoke to the challenges of earning any spot on a perennial playoff team.

“Usually it is very hard for any rookie to come into an ecosystem like ours that has the efficacy,” Snead said. “We've won before, so it's hard for those players to come in and earn equity. [We] try to find players that give us an edge and then put them in the ecosystem. Let them earn equity. And at the right time, they'll get on the field.”

Why Simpson looks like a natural fit in L.A.

McVay explained his muted draft-day expression the following day.

“The demeanor would have been stoic by nature because you are excited but … it is Matthew’s football team,” McVay said on Friday, in part. “Whenever that time comes for [Simpson] to get an opportunity to be Matthew’s successor will be on Matthew’s terms.”

If Simpson does need to wait a year or three before seeing meaningful action in live games, the experience will be familiar.

In the transfer-happy era of college football, Simpson made the rare decision to stay at Alabama his entire college career. He did not attempt more than 25 passes until his fourth and final season. Then, he completed 64.5% (305 of 473) of his attempts for, 3,567 yards, 28 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Simpson led the SEC in completions and attempts, ranking second in passing yards and passing touchdowns. Alabama finished 11-4 in his 15 starts.

The 6-foot-2, 208-pound quarterback raised concerns from some evaluators who believe his slighter frame contributed to his 2025 injuries and could increase his injury risk going forward. But even in his one-year sample size, Simpson impressed the Rams with his ability to process, his mobility, his versatility from dropback passing to play-action, and the timing and rhythm with which he threw.

His late-season performance dipped from his 2025 start, which evaluators attribute to a mix of playing through injury and playing tougher competition. Regardless, Simpson is aware he has room for refinement.

“There's not a throw that I feel like I can't make on the field,” Simpson said, “but it's also, I got to make sure that I throw it on time.”

Stafford health permitting, Simpson won’t be thrust into immediate regular-season action. But if he is, the Rams believe Ryan Grubb’s Alabama offense last season was rooted in similar principles to those which McVay asks of his quarterback.

And first, expect Simpson to receive opportunities over the next couple months to immerse on and off the field. He’s entering a team with the oldest starting quarterback in the league under contract. (Aaron Rodgers can change that if the 42-year-old signs his Pittsburgh tender or another deal.) There are practice benefits that come with that in spring and summer.

And once the regular season hits, Simpson will have opportunities to learn as the reigning MVP digests film, acts on his instincts and manipulates defenses with his footwork.

Simpson knows how to play the waiting game after three years sitting at Alabama. He’ll begin by focusing on improvement rather than expectations.

“I learned that from Coach [Nick] Saban about how if you have expectations, you're always really bound to fail,” Simpson said. “If I come in here and say, ‘Well, I want to win rookie of the year,’ well, Matthew Stafford just won the MVP. That's going to be a fail. So my plan is to just get better each day.

“I just want to get better each and every day so eventually I have a long career like Matthew.”

Making it to 18 seasons, like Stafford?

Somewhere, a 2043 class first-round quarterback will be waiting.
