Who serves on the Surprise City Council in 2026?

Surprise has six councilmembers elected from geographical districts and a mayor who is elected by voters across the city. Councilmembers in Surprise serve staggered four-year terms.

Councilmembers Nick Haney, Jack Hastings and Chris Judd are up for reelection in 2026. All are running unopposed.

Here's what to know about the Surprise City Council members.

District 1: Nick Haney

Nick Haney was elected in 2022, and his district covers the northernmost portion of Surprise. He is a fire captain and paramedic in Glendale.

He helps oversee transportation developments in the region as part of the Transportation Policy Committee for the Maricopa Association of Governments. Residents in his district in the northwest part of the city deal with nightmare congestion along the U.S. 60 or Grand Avenue, from Loop 303 near Sun City West to State Route 74 north of Wittmann. MAG and others are working to relieve the issue for the growing region.

Haney also serves on the city's Board and Commissions Nominations subcommittee, Community Outreach, Partnership and Grants Committee and the Tourism Fund Subcommittee.

Haney grew up in Surprise and, while he was in high school, he was involved in the Surprise Youth Council and served as chair.

He faces reelection in 2026.

District 2: Earle Greenberg

Earle Greenberg was elected in 2024. He is originally from Chicago, but moved to Surprise in 2013.

He founded Talentape Inc., a talent agency, with his mother in 1979. He also produced and directed hundreds of videos for companies like Apple, AT&T, American Dental Association, The American Red Cross, YMCA and more.

As chairman of the Telecommunications Commissions, Greenberg helped negotiate the first contracts when cable television became accessible in the Chicago suburbs in the early 1980s. He also served as the trustee and treasurer of the Missionbrook Sanitary District in Cook County, Illinois and was on the board for Turning Point Behavioral Health Care Center, a nonprofit.

He sits on the city's Board and Commissions Nominations and Rules subcommittees. He is also a Valley Metro RPTA board of director.

He faces reelection in 2028.

District 3: Patrick Duffy

Duffy was appointed to the Council in 2017, then elected in 2018 and reelected in 2020 and 2024. He has lived in Surprise for about a dozen years.

He is a financial advisor for SCF Securities Inc. He was a part-time recreation leader for the city before he was appointed to the council.

Duffy serves on the city's Tourism Fund and the Community Outreach, Partnership and Grants subcommittees. He is also a board member for WESTMARC, the West Valley’s economic advocacy organization.

He is a former member of the Surprise Municipal Corporation Board and has been part of many community and recreation events, including Spring Training support, Relay for Life and Cal Ripken All-Star games.

He faces reelection in 2028.

District 4: Johnny Melton

Melton was elected to the Council in 2024. He has lived in Surprise since 2011.

Melton works in energy performance contracting and has a background in corporate real estate. He served nine years in the U.S. Navy as a reactor plant operator and nuclear maintenance planner.

Before serving on the council, Melton served on the Dysart Unified School District Bond Advisory Committee and the district's Bond/Override Advisory Committee.

He serves on the city's Boards and Commissions Nominations, Education and Rules subcommittees.

He faces reelection in 2028.

District 5: Jack Hastings

Hastings was elected to the Council in 2020 to serve a partial term and was reelected in 2022. He has lived in Surprise for over 20 years.

Before serving on the Council, Hastings was a civics teacher at Valley Vista High School.

He is the assistant principal at Cimarron Springs Middle School. As a councilmember, he serves on the tourism fund and education subcommittees.

He faces reelection in 2026.

District 6: Chris Judd

Judd was first elected in 2018 and reelected in 2022. He has lived in the city for about 30 years.

He is a local business owner and manager and is an instructor at West-MEC, where he is expanding the Water Systems program. He also serves on the Board for White Tank Mountains Conservancy.

He serves on the Council's subcommittee for Community Outreach, Partnership and Grants.

Before serving on the Council, he was President of the Rotary Club of Surprise and Chairman of Taste of Surprise.

He faces reelection in 2026.

Blanche: Obama's concerns about DOJ targeting Trump critics are "extraordinarily rich" 02:18

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche denied to CBS News that the Justice Department is engaging in a retribution campaign against President Trump's adversaries, pushing back on criticism from former President Barack Obama — but he argued Mr. Trump has vast power to oversee the agency.

The Justice Department — which Blanche has led since last month after serving as second-in-command — has faced months of scrutiny for bringing criminal charges against Trump foes, including former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James. Critics also argue the department, which has historically maintained an arms-length relationship with the White House, is losing its traditional reputation as an apolitical agency.

In an interview with CBS News in Phoenix Wednesday, Blanche called allegations that his department is leading a retribution campaign "simply false," saying prosecutors are "doing our jobs" and "making America safe again."

He said the latest Comey indictment, which accused the former FBI director of threatening the 47th president by posting a photo of seashells arranged to form the numbers "86 47," was just one of the thousands of cases brought by the Justice Department every year. He insisted the case was spearheaded by "local prosecutors" and "local agents."

"I don't even know their names," Blanche said of the North Carolina-based federal prosecutors.

Obama joined the chorus of critics on Tuesday, telling late-night host Stephen Colbert that he's concerned about "the politicization of our justice system" and the risk that "whoever is in charge of the government starts using that to go after their political enemies." His remarks did not mention Mr. Trump personally but appeared to be directed at the president.

"The White House shouldn't be able to direct the attorney general to go around prosecuting whoever the president wants to prosecute," Obama said.

In response to the former president's comments, Blanche pulled out a pocket-sized copy of the Constitution and flipped to the part that lays out how the executive branch works.

"Article Two says, 'the executive power shall be vested in the President of the United States of America.' It does not say that the Attorney General stands off to the side," Blanche said.

He noted that he is a member of Mr. Trump's Cabinet, and argued the president has the right to lead the country "in all areas," including on criminal justice.

"To the extent that President Trump calls me and says that he thinks that we have a problem in this country, whether it's the scourge of drugs, illegal immigration," he said, "every American wants him to do that, and he should."

Comey and James were first indicted last fall on charges of lying to Congress and bank fraud, respectively, but their cases were tossed out on the grounds that the interim U.S. attorney who led the prosecutions was invalidly appointed. Shortly before those charges were brought, Mr. Trump penned a Truth Social post urging Blanche's predecessor, Attorney General Pam Bondi, to look into Comey, James and a third longtime Trump foil, Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff.

Asked whether the president is calling him and directing him to prosecute certain individuals, Blanche said he would not discuss his conversations with Mr. Trump.

"But rest assured, he has much better, bigger and important things to do than to worry about me doing my job," said Blanche. "And I wake up with a very clean conscience every morning. We are absolutely doing nothing but what we should be doing at the Department of Justice."

Blanche also called allegations from Democrats that Mr. Trump is prosecuting his opponents "extraordinarily rich." He pointed to the raft of criminal charges that Mr. Trump faced before returning to office last year, brought by state prosecutors in New York and Georgia and a federal special counsel. Blanche served as Mr. Trump's defense attorney in some of those cases.

"So I welcome criticism. Let's go. But if you're sitting in a glass house, you ought not throw stones," he said.

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for Season 50, Episode 11 of "Survivor."

It's the month of the "Survivor 50" finale (airing May 20), and the stakes rise with each episode, regardless of who viewers are rooting for.

And as if the gameplay alone wasn't already stress-inducing, each episode throws in a dramatic, unprecedented twist that host Jeff Probst reminds the cast was voted for by fans.

The May 6 "Survivor" episode, titled "Everyone Will Be Shooketh!," continued this trend after the immunity challenge, where Jonathan Young narrowly won a balance challenge. Though Jeff initially announced Tiffany Ervin as the winner, a panel of judges later disqualified her for using both feet on the stage during the challenge, which required players to stand only on one at the end.

Probst then revealed that the final nine would be split into two tribes, with each going to tribal council to vote someone out. Winning the challenge not only allowed Jonathan immunity but also the power to attend both tribal councils and cast a vote at each.

From left: Cirie Fields, Aubry Bracco, Emily Flippen, Rizo Velovic, Jonathan Young, Tiffany Ervin, Rick Devens, Ozzy Lusth and Joe Hunter in the May 6 episode of "Survivor" Season 50.

And hence, stress was high, leading to two dramatic votes that ended in celebration, despair, or a bittersweet mix of both, depending on who fans want to win.

Who was voted out first?

Season 45 returnee Emily Flippen experienced deja vu as she was once again eliminated on Day 21.

She attended tribal council with close ally Rick Devins, her target Cirie Fields, as well as Jonathan and Tiffany. Emily tried to convince Cirie, Tiffany, and Jonathan to vote for Rick, who she told to play his hidden immunity idol.

Unfortunately for her, Cirie decided to use her extra vote to split votes on Emily and Rick, ensuring that at least one of them would go home. After her bluff failed, Emily immediately joined the jury to watch the next tribal council.

History repeated itself in another heartbreaking blindside in the next tribal council, which included Aubry Braco, Ozzy Lusth, Rizo Velovic, Joe Hunter and Jonathan.

While the odds were seemingly stacked against Aubry, as Rizo, Ozzy and Joe were heavily aligned, she managed to sway the vote to save herself. Ozzy had mistakenly told Aubry, whom he assumed was a sitting duck, his plans to go to the end with Cirie.

She immediately told everyone else, sealing Ozzy's fate. Even his close ally Rizo voted against him, refusing to tell Ozzy to play his idol.

Despite having a dream he interpreted as a warning to play his idol, Ozzy didn't trust his instincts and went home with the advantage, as he did in Season 16 in 2008.

Ozzy Lusth in "Survivor" Season 50.Who is left on 'Survivor 50'?

The final seven of "Survivor" Season 50 include:

Cirie Fields: Seasons 12 ("Panama – Exile Island"), 16 ("Micronesia – Fans vs. Favorites"), 20 ("Heroes vs. Villains"), and 34 ("Game Changers")

Aubry Bracco: Seasons 32 ("Kaôh Rōng – Brains vs. Brawn vs. Beauty"), 34 ("Game Changers"), 38 ("Edge of Extinction")

Rick Devens: Season 38 ("Edge of Extinction")

Jonathan Young: Season 42

Tiffany Ervin: Season 46

Joe Hunter: Season 48

Rizo Velovic: Season 49

Who is on the jury in 'Survivor 50'?

The jury of "Survivor" Season 50 includes:

Ozzy Lusth: Seasons 13 ("Cook Islands"), 16 ("Micronesia – Fans vs. Favorites"), 23 ("South Pacific"), 34 ("Game Changers")

Emily Flippen: Season 45

Stephenie Lagrossa Kendrick: Seasons 10 ("Palau"), 11 ("Guatemala"), 20 ("Heroes vs. Villains")

Christian Hubicki: Season 37 ("David vs. Goliath")

Chrissy Hofbeck: Season 35 (Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers)

Benjamin "Coach" Wade: Seasons 18 (Tocantins – The Brazilian Highlands), 20 (Heroes vs. Villains), and 23 (South Pacific)

Dee Valladares: Season 45 winner

Millennial or Gen Z?

A new social media trend has big-name brands showing how they would market to millennial and Gen Z audiences, with the latter containing fewer words and many more emojis. Applebee's, Morton Salt, Baskin-Robbins and Petco are just a handful of the brands that have hopped on the trend.

In a social media post on May 4, Petco shared a photo of two different marketing copies, one created by a "Millennial PR Team" and the other by a "gen z social team."

The millennial copy reads: "For the pet parent who wants the very best for their fur babies. At Petco, you'll find thoughtfully curated products, trusted nutrition and expert-backed care to support every stage of their life. Your fur babies deserve quality you can feel good about. The doggos are going to love it." The text is long, detailed but still contains a bit of playfulness with the mention of "doggos."

The Gen Z copy, on the other hand, reads: "be so fr (for real) they need another toy" with several star and face emojis filling the space. Much more succinct, the copy is like a text sent between two friends. It better represents how members of Gen Z may converse with one another.

Health: Gen Z pout, 'influencer voice' and the horror of 'looking cringe’

Zaxby's also hopped on the trend, promoting its Cinco de Mayo deal on May 4.

The millennial copy of the advert outlines Zaxby's complete deal, including when it is available, along with some introductory text to tell the reader more about the brand.

The Gen Z copy is short and sweet: "zadd a zuesadilla zor zix zollars zabes," replacing all the first letters in the sentence with a "z." An image of the chain's quesadilla is also adorned with eyes, lips and hands, seemingly giving the menu item a saucy personality.

In a social media post made on May 4, 2026, Zaxby's compared two marketing styles for millennial and Gen Z audiences. The former, is much more text heavy, with the latter, shorter and full of many more emojis.

"We leaned into this trend because it was both timely and still early in adoption among brand accounts, giving Zaxby's an opportunity to stand out in-feed with culturally relevant content," Zaxby's Brand Marketing Vice President Ali Ghosh told USA TODAY via email. "At the same time, we had a timely message to deliver ... and saw the 'Millennial PR Team vs. Gen Z Social Team' trend as the perfect format to communicate the offer in a way that felt native to Instagram and Facebook, trend-driven and highly shareable."

AMC Theatres and Keurig Dr Pepper also participated in the trend, using a plethora of dazzling emojis and short texts to lure in a Gen Z crowd.

In a social media post shared on May 5, 2026, AMC Theatres shared an advert for AMC Stubs A-List, geared toward millennial and Gen Z audiences.

Describing the Keurig K-Mini Mate Plus to a Gen Z audience, Keurig Dr Pepper wrote: "she's tiny but she eats." In Gen Z slang, "eats" or "ate" is a sign of admiration. The miniature coffee machine performs well, so it "eats," the company said.

"This trend clicked because it highlights a tension most brands are still catching up to: People don’t engage with 'perfectly-curated' brand language, they engage with what feels real," Alysse Schneider, Keurig Dr Pepper's social media manager, told USA TODAY via email. "The gap between those two (generations) is what makes this so relatable."

In a social media post made on May 3, 2026, Keurig Dr Pepper shared dual adverts, targeting millennial and Gen Z audiences. What marketing experts are saying

Several marketing experts have taken to social media platforms like LinkedIn to break down the trend.

Hallie Santos, a community manager at a Phoenix ad agency, echoed Schneider's comments.

"The joke is simple; one side is polished, benefit-led brand copy, and the other is the same message translated into internet language: short, to the point, and funny," Santos wrote in a LinkedIn post. "We’ve seen versions of this specific Gen Z social media language in trends before, but this one makes the contrast even clearer with a side-by-side comparison."

But social media consultant Jon-Stephen Stansel isn't a fan. As a self-described "elder millennial social media marketer," he described the brand-forward trend as "lazy and unoriginal marketing."

"Seriously, can we not perpetuate false generational stereotypes in our advertising?" Stansel said in a LinkedIn post, critiquing the trend. "Does anyone besides marketers actually get this sort of self-referential meta-advertising? Does your target audience really care about the difference between your PR and social teams?"

Commanders have one of the hardest strength-of-schedules in 2026

With the vast majority of player movement in the books, NFL teams are turning their attention toward the upcoming season. Rookie minicamps are underway, or, in theWashington Commanders' case, happening this weekend; OTAs are two weeks out; and mandatory minicamps are in about six weeks. In less than 10 days, we'll have the entire 2026 NFL schedule and can begin assessing possible outcomes for the season.

USA TODAY

While we don't have the full schedule yet, we do know each team's 2026 opponents. Warren Sharp has used that information, combined with the players' movement over the last few months, to create an early strength-of-schedule prediction for every team.

In the graphic, you can see that theCommanders' strength-of-schedule ranks on the side of being more difficult. If you look at the article, you will find that Sharp says the Commanders have the 25th easiest (or 7th hardest) schedule in 2026. He also predicts the Commanders will win 7.5 games this season.

In 2025, the Commanders' schedule ranked near the middle of the league with regard to difficulty. This season, the Commanders have a more difficult battle to fight.

The thing is, predicting win totals without knowing a team's full schedule is like roulette. You never know where that ball is going to land. For example, if the Commanders host division rivals the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants in back-to-back weeks and then have to fly out west to face the San Francisco 49ers, that would be more difficult than hosting the Atlanta Falcons, followed by facing theTennessee Titansin Nashville. Those two scenarios are not created equal. Plus, not all of the international series games have been announced.

So, take this with a little bit of a grain of salt. Looking at the Commanders' home and away opponents, it's easy to see that their schedule is going to be difficult. It is not easy, however, to determine if they will win a game based solely on this information.

David Hernández was gripped by fear and anxiety when he heard the news that the virus-stricken MV Hondius would dock in Tenerife, where he works as an intensive care nurse at one of the island’s two hospitals.

“I thought ‘why us?’ Everyone will be scared by the uncertainty of the situation. This is bringing back flashbacks of the Covid-19 pandemic. We had a terrible time in the hospital then,” the 29-year-old told The Independent.

Three passengers have died and at least four people are sick on the ship in what health officials say is an outbreak of hantavirus, which usually spreads by inhaling contaminated rodent droppings. The WHO believes rare human-to-human transmission may have taken place aboard the vessel.

After the outbreak of the virus, Cape Verde was due to be the ship’s last point of call, but the West African nation refused to let passengers disembark. The Spanish government subsequently announced that the ship could port in Tenerife in three days, sparking a furious backlash.

On Wednesday, Canary Islands leader Fernando Clavijo sought to block the ship from docking, saying authorities could not guarantee public safety. Madrid said it had agreed to admit the ship to port following instructions and advice from the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Mr Hernández said the news had evoked memories of 2020, when the island became a focal point for the spread of Covid-19. Tenerife saw cases rise throughout the year, peaking in December. Lockdown restrictions had a devastating impact on tourism, the island’s main source of income.

“The population on the island has grown by about a million on the island since the pandemic and we have the same 24 beds in the intensive care unit. I don’t think we can cope,” he said.

“I am human and understand we all could have been on that cruise ship, but there must be some protocols. We have been overcrowded for years. It is getting crazy.”

Brian Harrison, a British businessman who has lived in Tenerife for over forty years, said there was a feeling of uncertainty among islanders.

“This is a virus, so there might be a quarantine. Will people be allowed to move around freely?,” he said. “The origin of the virus is from rodents. Obviously, you can control points where humans can move but you cannot control rodents. So, it is a very grey area.”

The Canary Islands depends on tourism, and 6.5 million Britons travelled to the Spanish archipelago last year. Tenerife is the most popular destination for UK holidaymakers, but there are fears that the tourism industry could be severely impacted by the docking of the ship.

Robeto Gómez, a businessman who works in the health industry, said: “My brother works in tourism as does my brother-in-law. This image of a cruise ship with passengers who have suffered and, in some cases, died from this virus, could be damaging.

“On the other hand, we always like to be welcoming and to show humanitarian solidarity towards others. So we must think of that.”

The spat between the Canary Islands and Madrid has also reignited debates over the balance and concentration of power in the country. Mr Clavijo has demanded an “urgent meeting” with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to discuss the issue, but Madrid has shown no signs of backing down.

Francesca Borges, a retired teacher, said residents in Tenerife felt once again the islands were being used by the central government to deal with an unwelcome problem.

“We think ‘why us again?’. During Covid lots of cruise ships were stranded here. One ship was allowed to come and dock here,” she said.

“In the late 19th century there was a cholera epidemic which began with an Italian ship which was allowed to dock here. People were locked down here.”

Ms Borges, 65, added: “There is a history of the Canary Islands having to take responsibility for a European problem. There is a sense that the Spanish government has always had this attitude that the Canary Islands is treated like a colony when it is in a situation like this.”
