- HBO's new docuseries *Bring Me the Beauties: A Model Cult *explores an '80s doomsday alien cult led by a charismatic New York socialite.

- Model and cult survivor Hoyt Richards is prominently featured in the series.

- Richards has had a fascinating life and career as a model and actor.

Based on the first episode of HBO's new docuseries *Bring Me the Beauties: A Model Cult*, we're in for a wild ride.

The latest docuseries from director Chris Smith (*Tiger King*) travels back to the '80s, when a charismatic New York City socialite who believed himself to be an alien recruited several members of the high-fashion modeling industry into a doomsday cult. Multiple survivors of Frederick von Mierers' Eternal Values cult are featured in the docuseries, though none more prominently than Hoyt Richards, a former model who used his fame and success to help bankroll von Mierers' enterprise before eventually escaping his clutches.

We'll have to wait until HBO airs the remaining episodes of the three-part docuseries to find out how Richards and the other survivors managed to get out. In the meantime, here's a primer on Richards, his successful modeling career, and what he's been up to since leaving von Mierers' cult behind.

Hoyt Richards was 16 when he met Frederick von Mierers

Richards met von Mierers in 1978, when the former was working a summer job as a house painter in Nantucket, Mass. As Richards described in a 2018 interview with the BBC's *Outlook* podcast, it wasn't "the place you would think you're gonna meet your potential cult leader." Richards, who was 16 at the time, had heard about von Mierers from friends, who described the older man as being "into all this Eastern philosophy and zen-speak."

According to Richards, von Mierers immediately "dove right into this philosophical conversation that at 16 I wasn't used to having." But the teen was "impressed" by von Mierers, and liked that he assumed Richards was capable of engaging in such "high-minded" conversation.

Von Mierers, who Richards guessed was probably in his thirties back then, was "known for having parties," and Richards often brought friends around to hang out, which he did several times that first summer. After graduating from high school, Richards spent a year at school in England before returning to the U.S. to attend Princeton, where he planned to play football. The summer before he was meant to start at Princeton, he ran into von Mierers, who extended an "open invitation" to visit his place in New York. Von Mierers offered to get Richards and his friends into nightclubs, including Studio 54.

An injury sidelined Richards' football career, and that's when von Mierers "got his hooks in."

An actor enmeshed with von Mierers told Richards he should just sit in the lobby at a commercial agency and wait to get noticed. He was right — Richards signed with the renowned Ford Models and landed a gig posing for acclaimed photographer Bruce Weber just three weeks into his tenure. Richards was on what he described as a "very accelerated" career track that saw him traveling between New York and Europe for modeling gigs.

In the '80s, Richards was among a handful of very successful male models that included John Pearson and Fabio Lanzoni, the Italian-American model who became a fixture on the covers of romance novels. Richards modeled for fashion clients including Gianni Versace, Ralph Lauren, and Donna Karan. Though professional success drew Richards' attention away from school, he managed to graduate from Princeton in 1985, after which he threw himself into modeling full-time. And that's when his relationship with von Mierers began to change.

"In the beginning, [von Mierers] was incredibly generous," Richards said on *Outlook*, recalling how von Mierers let him stay in his one-bedroom New York apartment, which he described as a "mini ashram." Richards was among multiple guests crashing at the apartment and sleeping on mats in the living and dining room areas. Even after Richards began making serious money, he said that he continued to sleep on a mat in von Mierers' apartment.

"As I started making more money, it was very clear that I had to attribute my success to Frederick's introduction to the business and that there were obviously things that needed to be paid for to expand our business," explained Richards, who said he was "happy to contribute."

Richards would take what he needed from each paycheck, "enough just to pay the bills," and give everything else to von Mierers. And there was plenty of cash to spare — as Richards explains in *Bring Me the Beauties*, he was making enough money that he could afford to pay for his final year at Princeton out of his own pocket.

As he told *Outlook*, Richards even spent "a couple hundred thousand dollars" on precious gems that von Mierers said were necessary for his followers to enhance their "spiritual being."

After leaving Eternal Values, Richards continued modeling — and acting

There's much more to von Mierers' story, most of which will be explored in new episodes of *Bring Me the Beauties*. But Richards' life after von Mierers and Eternal Values is also interesting.

In addition to modeling — which he still does to this day — Richards began working as an actor in the late '90s. Though he made a brief uncredited appearance alongside Fabio in *The Exorcist III* (1990), his first proper role was in the 1998 rom-com *Six Days, Seven Nights*, in which he (unsurprisingly) played an unnamed model opposite Anne Heche and Harrison Ford. He appeared in a 2002 episode of the short-lived sitcom *Three Sisters*, starring future *The Pitt* favorite Katherine LaNasa, and in a 2007 episode of *CSI: Miami*.

Richards branched out into screenwriting and producing. He served as a cowriter, producer, and star on the 2014 comedy *Dumbbells*, which co-starred his old modeling pal Fabio (as himself), Tom Arnold, and, most interestingly, *Family Matters* star Jaleel White as a cult leader.

In more recent years, Richards has appeared in numerous independent and short films.

WASHINGTON, June 3 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump is planning to use Cold War-era national ‌defense powers to send nearly $700 million to support coal facilities, ‌according to a White House official.

Trump could announce as soon as Thursday that he will invoke the Defense Production Act, the 1950 law granting presidents wide authority over national security-related industries, to upgrade more than a dozen coal power plants, build a massive West Coast coal export terminal ‌and match corporate funds to build new power plants, the official said.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity to not preempt the president's announcement, and cautioned that the details could still change.

The Trump administration has framed energy issues in existential terms as it eyes the domestic need to sustain power-hungry artificial-intelligence data centers and aims to marginalize ‌foreign adversaries that hold large fossil fuel reserves. Coal, though, has faced steady declines in U.S. usage. It once accounted for more than half of U.S. electricity generation, but fell to less than one-fifth in recent years, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Power ‌producers have largely switched to cheaper natural gas and renewable sources, wary of fossil fuel's effect on the planet's warming climate and increasing reliance on brittle ‌global supply chains.

Of the $700 million, more than half will fund 13 coal plant upgrades, $185 million will match corporate funds for coal facilities in Alaska, Maryland and West Virginia, and $75 million will support ‌the long-proposed West Gateway export terminal in Northern California.

Bloomberg first reported the planned coal support.

SEOUL, June 4 (Reuters) - South Korea and China have agreed to expand weekly flight rights between the countries for the ‌first time in seven years, Seoul's transport ministry said on ‌Thursday, in another sign of warming ties between the Asian neighbours.

The agreement, reached at bilateral aviation talks held in Seoul on May 27 to 28, will increase passenger flight rights by 56 weekly flights to 664 from 608, and cargo rights by 14 weekly flights to 68 from 54, the Ministry ‌of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said.

The ministry said the deal would make it easier to add flights on high-demand routes such as Incheon to Shanghai and Incheon to Guangzhou, where existing rights had been fully used by both sides.

It will also expand routes from South Korea's regional airports, including Busan and Cheongju, to 10 Chinese cities such as Guangzhou, Chengdu, ‌Shenzhen, Chongqing and Xian, the ministry said.

First-quarter passenger traffic between South Korea and China reached about 4.39 million, exceeding the pre-pandemic level of 4.14 million, according to the statement.

Lee So-young, the ministry's aviation policy chief, said it was encouraging that the two countries had achieved a ‌timely expansion of flight rights through active aviation talks at a time when exchanges between them were increasing.

"We expect this agreement to help promote visits to South Korea ‌by Chinese tourists, improve convenience for our citizens travelling to China and for import-export companies, and contribute to revitalising the economy by further boosting Korean airlines' entry into the Chinese market," Lee said.

The ministry ‌said it plans to allocate the newly secured rights to South Korean airlines in the second half of the year.

Joe Jonas is sharing why he's "grateful" to be able to co-parent his kids with ex-wife Sophie Turner.

The singer discussed navigating raising children as a single parent on a recent episode of the Hey Jonas podcast.

“There’s a lot of people in my situation that are single parents and go through this, and I’m grateful that I have a co-parent that I can balance even the bad days,” he said.

Joe Jonas is opening up about his experience co-parenting with his ex-wife Sophie Turner.

The 36-year-old musician shared why he’s “grateful” to be able to raise his daughters Willa, 5, and Delphine, 3, with the Game of Thrones actress on a recent episode the Jonas Brothers’ Hey Jonas podcast.

“I’m a single dad and I co-parent with my children’s mother,” Joe said. “I think my children have given me purpose again in my life.”

The DNCE frontman explained that his children have become “the reason I do what I do now,” noting that he works hard when his kids are away so that he can enjoy “my shared time where I get to be with them” again. Joe and Sophie, 30, share joint custody of their daughters following their 2024 divorce.

“They’ve really given me the reason to be alive, I would say,” Joe said of his children. “I think, in my saddest moments, I’m able to be reminded quickly that a hug from them can solve the world’s problems.”

The Camp Rock 3 star also shared that he’s appreciative that he isn’t raising Willa and Delphine entirely on his own and is able to parent them with help from Turner and his support system.

“There’s a lot of people in my situation that are single parents and go through this, and I’m grateful that I have a co-parent that I can balance even the bad days,” Joe said. “But I think being able to have good people around me to kind of help me navigate it is really special.”

Referencing his kids, Joe added, “I think they’ve taught me that I’ll be okay even in my toughest days.”

Joe and Sophie tied the knot twice in 2019 — first in a Las Vegas wedding in May and again in a much more formal celebration in France a month later. After four years of marriage, Joe filed for divorce from Sophie in September 2023.

"After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage," the pair wrote in a joint statement at the time. "There are many speculative narratives as to why, but truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children."

Sophie has spoken out about the backlash she faced in the wake of their split, with the X-Men actress calling the period after he filed for divorce “the worst few days of my life” in an interview with British Vogue.

She also reflected on their relationship as co-parents at the time. “I think we’re doing the best we can,” Sophie said. “I’m confident that we can figure it out. Joe is a great father to our children, and that’s all that I can ask for.

Joe has similarly praised Sophie’s co-parenting skills over the years, telling Esquire in October that their kids have “a fantastic mom,” adding, “I get to co-parent with a great person who prioritizes these kids as well.”

New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson fully participated in practice on Tuesday and is expected to be available for the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs, ESPN reported ahead of Wednesday night's Game 1.

Robinson is listed as questionable for the game following surgery to repair the fractured fifth metacarpal bone in his right hand. ESPN reported that he participated in light shooting and dribbling drills during Tuesday's open practice and wore a wrap over his shooting hand and right wrist.

An earlier report said Robinson, 28, would wear a brace on his hand. He did not speak with reporters at NBA Finals media day on Tuesday.

Robinson tallied eight points and 10 rebounds in 18 minutes on May 25 as the Knicks completed their sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference finals and won their 11th consecutive game.

The Knicks then had to wait for the conclusion of the Western Conference finals, with the Spurs beating the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday in Game 7.

New York coach Mike Brown said previously that Robinson was not injured during a game or practice. The coach said on Tuesday that Robinson went through individual drills in New York before the team flew to San Antonio.

The Spurs host the first two games of the best-of-seven Finals on Wednesday and Friday, then the series moves to New York for Games 3 and 4 on Monday and June 10.

The backup to six-time All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns, Robinson is averaging 5.3 points, 5.5 rebounds and 14.2 minutes per game while shooting a league-leading 73.7% from the field (28 of 38) in 13 playoff games as a reserve. He has made only 13 of 43 free-throw attempts (30.2%).

During the regular season, Robinson averaged 5.7 points, 8.8 rebounds, 1.2 blocks and 19.6 minutes in 60 games (16 starts) and finished eighth in voting for NBA Sixth Man of the Year.

For his career, Robinson has averaged 7.5 points, 8.0 boards, 1.7 blocks and 23.4 minutes in 397 regular-season games (215 starts) with New York. The Knicks' longest-tenured Knicks player was selected in the second round of the 2018 NBA Draft out of Western Kentucky.

LeBron James on meeting Chris Paul in high school

The careers of some of the best NBA players from the 2000s and 2010s are starting to wind down. While LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant are still playing at a superstar level, all three appear to be nearing their inevitable retirements. Over the last several years, the balance of power in the league has shifted over to men such as Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokić, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and, of course, Victor Wembanyama.

Chris Paul, who was arguably the best point guard in the NBA for many years starting in the late 2000s, just retired after an illustrious 21-year career in the league. While he never won a championship, he will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer, and his resume is almost as great as that of any point guard in basketball history.

On a recent episode of his "Mind the Game" podcast, James flashed back to the time he met Paul when both were in high school and praised Paul as one of the best ever to play his position.

"Fast forward to my senior year in high school, we're playing in Greensboro, North Carolina during HBCU weekend," James said. "There's a tournament down there, St. Vincent-St. Mary's goes down there and we're playing a team out of North Carolina. We win that game and Chris Paul comes into the locker room and that's the first time I officially met him.

"I was 17, I think he was 16. He was the best point guard in North Carolina at the time. I believe he was playing in that tournament, I believe his high school played in that tournament. But he came to the locker room, we met and from then on we kind of started like a friendship. To us playing in the McDonald's game together. To me supporting him while he was at Wake Forest. To him coming into the league. Olympic teammates.

"I mean it's incredible what he was able to do in all the stops he was in. New Orleans, with the Clippers obviously, I think his jersey is gonna be raised with the Clippers some day. Even his short time in Houston, making an impact there. His Finals appearance with Phoenix, and so on and so on. He's definitely gonna go down as one of the best point guards that's ever played this game, one of the most fierce competitors to ever play this game. And to add the icing to the cake, his daughter and my daughter happen to be best friends and that's pretty cool."

In his prime, Paul was a player who had virtually no weaknesses. His 16.8 points per game average for his career may not be very impressive, but he could drop 30 points in any given contest, especially come playoff time. He led the league in assists per game five times, and he was also a strong defender who led everyone in steals per game six times. Paul is currently second in career assists with 12,552 (James is in fourth place with 12,016 assists).

Of course, Paul and James have been tight for many years, and they formed one-half of the so-called "Banana Boat Crew" that includes Carmelo Anthony and James' former Miami Heat teammate Dwyane Wade.

The Knicks have had a lot of time to recover from bumps and bruises. They've been idle since ousting the Cleveland Cavaliers in a four-game sweep in series that ended May 25.

But that doesn't mean the Knicks will come in healthy. Their star center Mitchell Robinson broke the pinky on his right hand and underwent surgery to repair it. Reports say he plans on playing with a protective brace.

Spurs vs. Knicks this year

The Knicks went 1-1 against the Spurs this year. The Knicks won 114-89 on March 1, but fell to the Spurs 134-132 on New Year's Eve.

When was the last time the Knicks were in the Finals?

The Knicks were last in the NBA Finals in 1999 where they lost to the Spurs.

Knicks vs. Spurs prediction

The Knicks are the hottest team in the NBA, having not lost since Game 3 of the first round series against the Atlanta Hawks. But the West is a different world. The Spurs are the better team and have homecourt. It should go six or seven, but the Spurs will win the series. We'll say Spurs in six.
