For *The Vampire Diaries* creatives, casting Enzo was a particularly difficult task. Because originally, the role was going to be very different.

"You were supposed to be the third Salvatore brother," executive producer Julie Plec tells star Michael Malarkey in episode 8 of *EW's Binge: The Vampire Diaries*. Writer Brett Matthews adds, "That was always the plan, and then it went a different direction, but that's why it was so hard to find the person. We thought it was going to be a Salvatore brother, so we cast a very wide net [and] looked very hard." Ultimately, they scrapped that plan and made it so Enzo didn't share Salvatore blood, but he was a brother figure for Damon (Ian Somerhalder) for many years (and he was sired by Lily Salvatore).

But that wasn't the only plan that changed in the writers' room over the years. In discussing the *Vampire Diaries*' final season, Plec and Matthews recall the final major debate: Which Salvatore were they going to kill in the series finale? "We went back and forth in the writers' room all season long," Plec says. "We finally landed on: We're killing Damon. That's the right thing to do. He is the one with the consequence to pay. Stefan was morally a bit stronger of a character."

Matthews adds, "Damon's a fairly obvious choice," noting that the writers really fell in love with the idea of Damon compelling Stefan (Paul Wesley) to let him die. But when executive producer Kevin Williamson proposed that it should be Stefan that dies, they started to rethink their plan. "It felt like dying for Stefan freed him from a lot of weight, whereas it felt like living for Damon freed him to go and be the man that he was always supposed to be," Plec says.

Of course, both Salvatores were meant to die in the original ending Plec and Williamson came up with during the show's second season. In that ending, "The boys would sacrifice themselves to save Elena so that Elena could go and have a life and be human and live," Plec recalls during the podcast. "To save her, they would die together, and that was always the pitch. And then when Nina [Dobrev] left, it felt like the show can't be as much about protecting Elena's happiness, although that's important to us, but we want to protect the bothers' happiness, we want them to get something out of this. Then it shifted to: We can't kill both of them for her because that feels somehow like nobody got what they wanted. Let's find a different way to give one of these brothers the happiness that they need and the other brother the closure that they need."

(One other way Dobrev leaving changed the plan? Plec says, "I thought that by the time we came back to the end of the series, whenever it was, that Elena would've found her way back to Stefan and Damon would've found a different path.")

In the late-2000s and early-2010s, it was looking like miniseries were going away. Then came *American Horror Story* in 2011, which helped resurrect the genre and led to a boom of limited and anthology series that hasn't slowed down 15 years later.

Netflix has been at the forefront of this resurrection, housing numerous buzzworthy miniseries that went on to win the genre's top prize at the Emmys, such as *Adolescence*, *Baby Reindeer*, and *The Queen's Gambit*. The streamer also has riveting docuseries like *The Andy Warhol Diaries* and *Wild Wild Country* that explore their subjects further than a traditional documentary could.

Ahead, find our recommendations for the 24 best miniseries on Netflix worth binging in their entirety over the weekend.

James Franco as Jake Epping in '11.22.63'

Russ Martin/Hulu

Based on the alternative history novel by Stephen King, this Hulu-produced miniseries is even more thoughtful and engrossing than its premise suggests. James Franco stars as Jake Epping, an English teacher who gains access to a portal that allows him to travel back in time to stop the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. But Jake's mission becomes complicated when he finds himself adjusting nicely to his new life in the '60s, while every choice he makes threatens to change the course of human history. It's a powerful character study in the body of a propulsive sci-fi thriller. —*Kevin Jacobsen*

This four-part miniseries has become a TV unicorn since its March 2025 release, becoming a massive hit with viewers, achieving universal acclaim from critics, and earning eight Emmys (including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series). *Adolescence* centers on a 13-year-old boy (Owen Cooper) accused of murdering a female classmate, deftly exploring the motive that led to the crime as well as the devastating impact it has on his family. Each episode takes place over the course of an hour and is filmed in one continuous take, from immersing us in the unnerving dread of the initial police interrogations to the sobering reality of his family left to ponder where they went wrong. It's gripping television, powered by masterful performances and urgent, economical storytelling. —*K.J.*

If you're excited that female antiheroes are having a moment, then *Alias Grace* should be next on your watchlist. Created by *Women Talking *director Sarah Polley and directed by *American Psycho* helmer Mary Harron, *Alias Grace *follows Grace Marks (Sarah Gadon), a 19th-century maid who is in jail for allegedly murdering her employers. Like fellow Margaret Atwood adaptation *The Handmaid's Tale*, *Alias Grace* is a powerful critique of the plight of women in a patriarchal society, but it's also a miniseries that will keep you constantly guessing about the protagonist’s guilt or innocence. —*Janey Tracey*

Utilizing innovative technology to simulate Warhol's voice, the series brings the artist's meticulously written diaries to life, guiding us through his career as a painter, the various loves of his life, and his emergence as a pop culture icon in the '60s. Aided by revealing interviews from various public figures whose lives were touched by Warhol, *The Andy Warhol Diaries* is a fittingly stylish tribute to a legend. —*K.J.*

Richard Gadd as Donny Dunn in 'Baby Reindeer'.

Based on Richard Gadd's one-man show about his experience with stalking, *Baby Reindeer* starts with humor, then takes a sharp turn that makes you reevaluate everything that came before. The Emmy-winning miniseries has been controversial, especially after a lawsuit was filed by the woman who claims to be the inspiration for the series. But, wherever you stand on the ethics of fictionalizing real people, *Baby Reindeer* still stands on its own as intimate, gut-wrenching television that's deeply personal. —*J.T.*

Two of television's most accomplished stars square off in this gripping cat-and-mouse miniseries. Claire Danes plays Aggie Wiggs, an author struggling with depression, who finds inspiration to write her latest book about her enigmatic new neighbor, Nile Jarvis (Matthew Rhys). Nile, a real estate developer, is suspected of murdering his first wife, and Aggie goes on a dangerous mission to learn the truth. Both Emmy-winning stars turn in committed performances as their respective deeply flawed characters, but Rhys in particular delivers one of the most chilling performances in recent television history. —*K.J.*

Bodyguard (2018)

Richard Madden as David Budd and Keeley Hawes as Julia Montague in 'Bodyguard'. World Productions/Netflix

Many shows might build to their first nail-biting sequence, but not *Bodyguard*. The first episode starts with a 20-minute scene in which David Budd (Richard Madden), a British Army war veteran suffering from PTSD, tries to talk down a suicide bomber while on a train with his two children. EW staffers praised Madden's Golden Globe-winning performance, the portrayal of women in positions of power, and the "what-the-heck-is-even-happening moments" that make the miniseries impossible not to binge. And the viewers seemed to agree: When it aired in the U.K., *Bodyguard* became the country's most successful launch of a drama series in the 2010s. —*J.T.*

James A. Garfield may not have the name recognition of other centuries-old presidents like George Washington, John Adams, or Abraham Lincoln, but this four-part miniseries has certainly elevated his profile. Michael Shannon stars as Garfield as he becomes the 20th President of the United States and advocates for civil rights. Meanwhile, troubled devotee Charles J. Guiteau (Matthew Macfadyen) turns increasingly disgruntled, leading to him shooting the president. It's a compelling two-hander that explores both the potential and dangers of humanity. —*K.J.*

Godless (2017)

Michelle Dockery as Alice Fletcher in 'Godless'

*Godless* takes the Western genre and turns it on its head, focusing on a town almost entirely run by women after a mining accident kills most of the men. Jeff Daniels chews the scenery as murderous robber Frank Griffin, giving a villainous performance for the ages (even if some of his monologues run a little long). But the women are the standouts, especially *Downton Abbey*'s Michelle Dockery and Merritt Wever as the men's clothes-wearing, overtly feminist Mary Agnes. "I'm done with the notion that the bliss of me and my sisters is to be found in childbearing and caregiving," she declares. —*J.T.*

Griselda (2024)

You've never seen Sofía Vergara quite like this. The *Modern Family* alum sheds her comedic persona — and puts on some prosthetics — to deliver a chilling, Emmy-nominated performance as Griselda Blanco, the infamous Colombian drug lord. According to director Andrés Baiz, who also worked on *Narcos*, Vergara was drawn to the role of a woman in a man's world and the opportunity to show her range. "This was a chance to reinvent herself and step out of her comfort zone," Baiz told EW. "She knew she had to dive in completely into this role and...push herself to the limit." —*J.T.*

Less of an adaptation than a reimagining, *The Haunting of Hill House* has almost nothing in common with the original Shirley Jackson novel except the characters' names. But director Mike Flanagan captures the spirit of the work; in true elevated horror fashion, the miniseries uses ghosts as metaphors for trauma and unresolved grief, reaching a terrible and beautiful climax with the now-classic episode "The Bent-Neck Lady."

"A ghost can be a lot of things: memories, guilt, regrets, trauma, loss," Flanagan told EW. "We all have our ghosts to contend with, and that contention is where we learn the most about ourselves, as individuals and as a society." —*J.T.*

You don't need to follow basketball to appreciate *The Last Dance*. Chronicling Michael Jordan's final season with the Chicago Bulls, this 10-part docuseries became a quarantine favorite at a time when no one could watch live sports, painting a compelling portrait of ambition, leadership, and the price of success. "Sports fans or non-sports fans, the Chicago Bulls were a global phenomenon," director Jason Hehir told EW. "This was a cast of characters that Hollywood couldn't come up with, and Michael Jordan was the star of all stars." —*J.T.*

William Golding's classic novel about British boys who survive a plane crash and make a new society on a deserted island has seen multiple film adaptations over the years. Jack Thorne, fresh from co-creating the Emmy-winning miniseries *Adolescence*, successfully delivered the book's first TV adaptation, a four-part miniseries that gives the story its proper due as it explores the psychological impact of the boys' gradual descent into darkness. Teeming with exciting new talent (particularly David McKenna as Piggy), the limited series manages to be as relevant today in its depiction of the corruption of youth as it was when the book was published in 1954. —*K.J.*

Based on Stephanie Land's memoir, *Maid* follows Alex (Margaret Qualley), a young mother who escapes an abusive relationship and struggles to support herself and her daughter. The miniseries is a raw and empathetic portrayal of the challenges faced by those living on the margins of society and a scathing indictment of the institutions that make it nearly impossible to escape abuse and poverty. Qualley's real-life mother Andie MacDowell has an unsettling supporting role as Alex's mentally ill mother, but Qualley is the star, and her nuanced, Emmy-nominated performance makes *Maid *both heartbreaking and inspiring. —*J.T.*

*The Haunting of Hill House* is Mike Flanagan's claim to fame, but some might call *Midnight Mass* his magnum opus. The miniseries follows Riley Flynn (Zach Gilford), a man who returns to his religious hometown after serving prison time for manslaughter. When a mysterious priest (Hamish Linklater) arrives, strange and unexplainable events begin to occur. Full of slow-burn horror, it's Flanagan's most personal work, based on his experiences with recovery and his upbringing in a Catholic community. "I don't know how long I could have gone without writing it," he wrote in a letter to critics. “This...was the story I always wanted to tell." —*J.T.*

The series follows college classmates Emma (Ambika Mod) and Dexter (Leo Woodall), whose relationship unfolds on the same day over the course of 20 years. A lovely rom-com elevated by Mod and Woodall's chemistry and nuanced, charming performances, *One Day* will have you in tears by the end of your binge. —*J.T.*

A prequel series to ratings juggernaut *Bridgerton*, *Queen Charlotte* offers a lush, romantic look at the origins of one of the most beloved characters. The miniseries, by super creator Shonda Rhimes, delves into the young Queen Charlotte's (India Amarteifio) rise to power and her relationship with King George III (Corey Mylchreest). The story has a modern resonance as Queen Charlotte is written as a woman of color, which is the belief of many historians. "I wanted to tell the story of this young woman of color arriving in this world where she never imagined she'd be," Rhimes told EW. —*J.T.*

Anya Taylor-Joy as Beth Harmon in 'The Queen's Gambit'

Phil Bray/Netflix

The miniseries that made everyone learn chess during quarantine, *The Queen's Gambit* was the surprise hit of 2020, captivating audiences with its riveting tale of chess prodigy Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy). Set during the Cold War, the Emmy-winning series traces Beth's journey from a Kentucky orphanage to the international chess scene, all while dealing with addiction and inner demons. The quick pacing and inventive visuals make chess matches as thrilling as a sports movie climax, but Taylor-Joy's mesmerizing performance is the real draw. As EW's critic writes, "*Queen's Gambit* will be remembered as the final star-making moment for Taylor-Joy, before her movie career rockets fast and Furiosa-ly." —*J.T.*

Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley in 'Ripley'

Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley in 'Ripley'.

*Ripley* brings Patricia Highsmith's infamous con artist to the small screen in a stylish retelling that goes full noir, filmed entirely in black and white. These changes allow for a darker, lonelier version of Tom Ripley (played by a career-best Andrew Scott), whose complex psychology and lack of glamour is for a modern audience. "I didn't purposely try to get sympathy or empathy for him," creator Steven Zaillian told EW. "I trusted that, just by telling the story, that same thing would happen as it did in the book." —*J.T.*

This four-part British series is based on the real-life story of mothers who fought their town's council on behalf of their children. At the center is the toxic waste scandal in Corby, Northamptonshire, England, where the mishandling of industrial waste led to birth defects for several of the town's newborns. Jodie Whittaker and *White Lotus* alum Aimee Lou Wood are superb as two of the mothers whose babies were affected, and the series is at once infuriating and inspiring as it portrays the long and winding road of seeking justice. —*K.J.*

Based on the devastating, Pulitzer Prize-winning article "An Unbelievable Story of Rape" from ProPublica and the Marshall Project, *Unbelievable* is a hard-hitting, unusually compassionate police procedural about two detectives (Toni Collette and Merritt Wever) as they investigate a series of sexual assaults. Kaitlyn Dever gives a heartbreaking performance as Marie, a rape survivor dismissed by authorities, which the actress called "the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my career." But instead of dwelling on the gendered injustices, the miniseries highlights the importance of having women in positions of power, as the empathetic approach taken by the female investigators is key to righting the wrongs of the case. —*J.T.*

Based on Deborah Feldman's memoir, *Unorthodox* tells the story of Esther "Esty" Shapiro, a young woman who flees her ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn for a new life in Berlin. The miniseries is a gripping tale of self-discovery and rebellion, with Shira Haas delivering an extraordinary turn as Esty. She earned an Emmy nomination for her performance, not least because of that powerful singing scene. "The show is about a woman finding her voice, and in that scene, she's literally finding it," Haas told EW. "She's even surprising herself of what's coming out of her." —*J.T.*

Ava DuVernay's *When They See Us* is a searing, unflinching account of the wrongful convictions of the Central Park Five, five Black and Latino teenagers who were falsely accused of a brutal assault in 1989. The miniseries powerfully depicts the systemic racism and injustice faced by these young men, following their harrowing journey from arrest to exoneration. With DuVernay's auteur touch and stellar performances from an ensemble cast, especially Jharrel Jerome, who won an Emmy for his portrayal of Korey Wise, *When They See Us* is as emotionally devastating as it is necessary viewing. —*J.T.*

Chronicling the rise and fall of the Rajneeshpuram commune in Oregon during the 1980s, the docuseries delves into the controversial practices of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and his followers, leading to one of the most bizarre, shocking, and underreported events in American history. It's a wild ride filled with twists, legal battles, and a fascinating cast of real-life characters. —*J.T.*

1984 BYU football team had an incredible sense of good timing

If you talk to college football historians or to any older analyst who was working at the time, BYU's 1984 national championship remains a source of debate. Even those who think BYU deserved the 1984 title (as I do) would agree that BYU versus Washington would have been a terrific national championship showdown. It never happened, and in many ways that is what fuels the debate about that season. All of that aside, we can be sure of this: BYU did pick the best possible year to go 12-0, win the Holiday Bowl over a six-win Michigan team, and make it stand up enough to claim the trophy. Bill Connelly, before he moved to ESPN, wrote for SB Nation about the Cougars' exquisite timing:

"To win the national title as a mid-major your timing has to be amazing. Like BYU's. In the last 50 years, only one year has produced a No. 2 or No. 3 team in Est. S&P+ with a worse percentile rating than 1984: 1967. The fifth year of the 1980s produced no 99th-percentile team and only one above the 96th. That's pretty incredible. And in this year of amazing parity, BYU walked right through an open door.

"This was not the best BYU team of the LaVell Edwards era, not even close. In terms of Est. S&P+ percentiles, the Cougars hit 97.3% in 1979, 97.6% in 1980, and 96.9% in 1983, all better than 1984's 95.1%. But as I end up saying a lot, your best shot at an amazing breakthrough is simple consistency -- it's being good every year. Edwards and BYU established and maintained an incredibly high level for a WAC team, and when monstrous parity hit college football, the Cougars swooped in."

This is a reminder that a competitor's best season, performance, or analytics might not matter if the competition is better, but in 1984, the competition wasn't. BYU's timing was magical. The rest is history ... and a source of debate.

Got to get a sense of where everybody is…Is it possible that we just pick up the options for everybody and roll into next season? That's certainly possible. Former Milwaukee Brewers Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes won't be back for the Arizona Diamondbacks until at least late this season after a new injury sustained as he rehabs following Tommy John surgery.

Burnes won't return until September at the earliest after suffering a teres major strain behind his right shoulder, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic said.

An MRI revealed the issue last week after he felt tightness while throwing live batting practice in Arizona, his first opportunity to throw BP since elbow surgery last year. Once healed, Burnes will have to restart his throwing progression from the beginning.

Burnes was initially targeting a return around the all-star break. He signed a six-year, $210 million deal with Arizona before last season but made only 11 starts before suffering the elbow injury. He had a 2.66 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 64 innings.

Milwaukee traded Burnes, an all-star with the Brewers three straight years from 2021 through 2023, after the 2023 season in a deal that brought back Joey Ortiz and DL Hall from Baltimore.

In his one and only season with the Orioles, Burnes was again an all-star, posting a 2.92 ERA over 32 starts with 181 strikeouts in 194 innings. Burnes won the NL Cy Young in 2021 with a 2.43 ERA, the first Brewers pitcher so honored since Pete Vuckovich in 1982. That season, he struck out 234 batters in 167 innings, and he led the National League with 243 strikeouts over his 202 innings in 2022.

Both Burnes with the Orioles and the Brewers were eliminated in the first round of the 2024 postseason.

The Diamondbacks momentarily sit in second in the National League West with a 34-31 record, 7½ games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and a half-game ahead of the San Diego Padres in the standings.

It was a mix of the good, the bad, and the fabulous at the 2026 Tony Awards on CBS as trophies were handed out, performances hit the stage, and big anniversaries were celebrated.

Pink hosted the event, which featured performances from all four Best Musical nominees — The Lost Boys, Schmigadoon!, Titanique, and Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York). All three Best Revival of a Musical nominees — Cats: The Jellicle Ball, Ragtime, and The Rocky Horror Show — also took to the stage.

And then there were celebration performances for The Book of Mormon (15th anniversary) and Chicago (30th anniversary), with stars from the past slipping back into their old roles.

What moments soared and floored during the ceremony, and what crashed and burned? Here are the best and worst moments of the 2026 Tony Awards.

BEST: That super-sized opening number

Pink certainly got a lot of support during her opening number, as over 170 Broadway performers joined the Tonys host for an opening number rendition of "Lady Marmalade." While most of the rejiggered lyrics seemed to just be shouting out names of nominees like Lesley Manville and Carrie Coon, it was still thrilling to see basically every Broadway musical actor of the past year combine forces not unlike the mighty Wonder Twins. And Megan Thee Stallion brought the house down entering courtesy of two shirtless men. "I don't even know those guys," she told the crowd. "They were just two strangers carrying some cake."

BEST: Cole Escola and Maya Rudolph bring the funny

Presenting the night's first award of the main ceremony for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play, Oh, Mary! creator Cole Escola and current Oh, Mary! star Maya Rudolph got the evening started right, with Rudolph noting that "Tonight's nominees know the power of words and the courage it takes to say them, in exchange for money." Escola then referenced Oedipus by commenting, "A play that asks the question: Can women really have it all?" This duo certainly gave the audience their all. If only we could see them together on the same Oh, Mary! stage as well.

BEST: The Cats: Jellicle Ball fans

We don't mean fans as in people, but literal fans. Yellow and black fans were being waved throughout the crowd whenever Cats: The Jellicle Ball won an award on either the Pluto Tonys: Act One section of the evening or the main CBS broadcast, with Best Direction of a Musical winners Zhailon Levingston and Bill Rauch driving the color theme home with their yellow and black suits. Watching the show's most famous prop/merch item infiltrate the Radio City Music Hall — especially during an incredible performance — was a welcome sight indeed.

WORST: Host shtick

Ariana DeBose and P!NK speak onstage during The 79th Annual Tony AwardsCredit: Theo Wargo/Getty

Former Tonys host Neil Patrick Harris starting the show off with an airborne Pink worked, but a later meeting between Pink and Ariana DeBose in which the former three-time host offered tips to the current one ("Say something undeniably true") didn't really go anywhere and was just one big set-up for DeBose ripping off Pink's tear-away pants… which was less fun (and funny) than it sounds.

We're getting to the emotional part of our *Schitt's Creek* journey.

For season 3 of EW's BINGE podcast, we're recapping *Schitt's Creek* with Dan Levy himself. Every Wednesday, the showrunner, co-creator, and star of the Emmy-nominated CBC and Pop TV comedy breaks down a season with EW's Shana Naomi Krochmal and Patrick Gomez. He shares behind-the-scenes secrets and walks us through some of the show's iconic moments. Follow along and you'll be ready when the final season premieres in January.

In this week's episode, which you can hear below, we cover season 4, the most musical and emotional season yet. They break down Patrick's epic open mic serenade, the iconic "you make me feel right" speech, and David's two musical numbers. Here are just a few highlights from this week's BINGE, which you can subscribe to on iTunes or wherever you listen to podcasts.

**That one year at Asbestos Fest**

Schitt's CreekSeason 4, Episode 3

Moira Rose is an enthusiastic philanthropist. When Eva Longoria dropped out of the Everybody Nose benefit due to exhaustion, Moira did the pair's ventriloquist act on her own. She also got Winnie Mandela to RSVP to an Artists Against Eczema benefit within an hour. So, it's no surprise that she jumped at the chance to get involved with Asbestos Fest — even if she thought it was a celebration of the town's asbestos at first.

Excited to be front and center at first, Moira is faced yet again with the prospect of acting, which she is a bit fearful of after such a long time away. "She decides on the Patty Hearst one-woman show and realizes that she can't pull it off," Levy says. "And David who, I guess when push comes to shove, will do what he can for his mother because I think they have a very wonderful bond, agrees to participate in their Christmas medley that they would do at their holiday parties every year."

Turns out their painful-yet-incredible duet was initially written differently. Levy scripted the medley to be a solo for Moira, but Catherine O'Hara wanted him to sing it with her. "The look in her eyes when she told me was like, *you'll be doing this*. And I said, ‘When ‘will I ever get this opportunity again to be immortalized on television?'" Levy shares. O'Hara worked out the whole tune, sent it to Levy to learn his part, and that magical musical *Schitt's Creek* moment was born.

**Patrick's Simply the Best**

Moira and David gave us the funniest musical moment of the season, but Patrick delivered the most iconic one. During an open mic event at Rose Apothecary, Patrick dedicates a performance of "Simply the Best" to David, a romantic performance that surely touched anyone watching.

"I knew that he could pull it off. I find it incredibly cringy, people singing generally, but I knew that he had such a confidence and a conviction to that side of his artistry that I wanted to use it," Levy says about Noah Reid's abilities.

Levy scripted the moment as "Patrick sings a surprisingly beautiful cover," but that wonderful stripped back version was all Reid. The actor said he'd give it a try and after a few weeks, he returned with the acoustic tune heard in the episode. "If we didn't have that song and he didn't do it the way that he had, I think that scene would not have had the kind of weight that it did and the ability to change my character in the way that it did," Levy says.

Schitt's CreekSeason 4, Episode 6

The weight of the song even got to O'Hara, who couldn't get through the scene without crying. Moira holding a tissue was not initially part of the scene, but was kept in to "show the candidness of television" according to Levy, who also says, "It was a moment that, for me, meant a lot because it was a parent supporting their kid."

"I think for us to be able to project a loving and supportive family in a moment when it counts was really important. And to show that kind of physical support of a parent supporting their queer child in a really lovely and magical time in their life was a message that I wanted to get out there," he explains.

Watching Patrick serenade David in front of a live audience was incredibly emotional and an important step for the beloved couple. Levy calls it a moment where things in a relationship progress to the next level, one that could be dramatized. An emotional moment the comedy earned after four seasons. "I think each of our characters in the fourth season were experiencing emotional stakes that they had not been used to before," Levy says, "We've earned the ability to ride that fine line between comedy and real human moments.

**"You make me feel right"**

David knew Patrick's previous relationships were with women, but being faced with the reality of his boyfriend's past was a completely different matter. When Alexis accidentally brings Patrick's ex-fiancée Rachel to a family barbecue, things get complicated for the couple.

Rachel's appearance sparked a deep panic in David who "was on the precipice of loving someone" and used the situation as a reason to confirm his own belief that bad things always happen to him. "I didn't want the relationship to be super easy. I didn't want it to just constantly fall into place," Levy explains.

David's panicked reaction turns into a reason to apologize after Patrick explains what their relationship means to him, delivering one of the show's most powerful speeches. He tells David that his past relationships and engagement to Rachel never felt right and that David makes him "feel right." "That was also a moment when we got to have Patrick really understand what the relationship means to him and really contextualize his sexuality a bit," Levy adds. After Patrick makes his feelings clear, David has to "earn that back after throwing a bit of a hissy fit and embarrassing himself."

**Simply the Best: The Sequel**

Schitt's Creek

David's reaction to Rachel's appearance required an apology, one that included another musical moment for viewers to enjoy. To mend his things with Patrick, David lip-synced for his relationship with another performance of "Simply the Best."

Levy liked the idea better as a part of his script than as an actual thing he had to perform. "You get up to the day and it's like, I don't, I'm not a dancer. I'm not really a performer. I'm not a musician. I don't know what I'm going to do," he shares. Fortunately, Levy got some help: a bottle of Prosecco. "We shot that scene right after lunch and I requested a bottle of Prosecco to have over lunch, Noah and I split the bottle and we shot it," he says. The result was a wonderful song-and-dance, which was made up of footage mainly from the first take.

While David was a man on a mission, Levy was uncomfortable doing the scene, which he calls "so outside" of his comfort zone. "As an actor, it was the most unsafe I've ever felt, he explains, "that level of unabashed, just lack of consideration for how this is going to look or appear on film."

The scene got a strong reaction from the *Schitt's Creek* crew and viewers. It was planned to be humorous, but those behind the camera were crying after it was shot. "I thought I had done it wrong and I think at times there are moments that come out of when you're making TV that are unexpected," he says. "I don't think I knew what the context of the moment was and how emotional it would be, I guess, for people who were invested in the storyline." The viewers maintained that same energy when messages came in from people who shared they were also sobbing after watching David's performance.

Plus, the song charted after the episode aired. So all that work was simply the best after all.

***Schitt's Creek* embraces drama **

Schitt's Creek

Season 4 of *Schitt's Creek* was full of powerful, emotional moments in addition to the usual laughs and, according to Levy, it's when the comedy roped people into the show.

"We had been slowly but surely building people who were interested and I think getting to a point where we could earn the kinds of emotional stakes … that "made people feel a kind of closeness to the show that was beyond just the comedy." The season included exploring queer relationships and other new and uncharted territory within the relationships of these characters that viewers grew to love.

"You can be a comedy and not be scared of drama as well," Levy adds.

*Schitt's Creek*'s sixth and final season begins Jan. 7 on Pop TV. New episodes of EW's BINGE are released each Wednesday.
