FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Iraq striker Aymen Hussein was delayed on the way to his first World Cup.

He still made the best of his tournament debut.

Earlier this month, it wasn't clear whether Hussein would be able to compete in the tournament after he and another member of the team's traveling party were detained for several hours coming through U.S. customs in Chicago.

Two weeks later, Hussein scored the second World Cup goal in his country's history during Iraq's 4-1 loss to Norway on Tuesday.

Hussein also had a late own goal, but Iraq coach Graham Arnold took only positives out of his star's effort.

"I'd rather remember his performance and the way he's played," Arnold said. "He's had quite a few injures during the season. For him to get through 90 minutes. ... He's the type of player that's very difficult to control in the box. I'm very proud of him."

Norway took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute on a sliding goal by Erling Haaland.

Nine minutes later, Hussein energized a sizable contingent of white-clad Iraqi fans amid a sea of Norwegian red at Gillette Stadium.

Amir Alammari corralled a ball on the baseline halfway between the left corner and the goal and fired a cross. It eluded Norway's defenders, allowing Hussein to punch a clean header that bounced under the hand of diving goalkeeper Orjan Nyland.

Iraq is playing in its second World Cup and first in 40 years.

Hussein appeared deflated as he shook hands with Norway's players afterward, but his teammates were proud of the lift — however momentary — his goal provided to a team that came in as a heavy underdog.

"It's a proud moment for him," defender Hussein Ali said. "But, of course, the end result, it's hard to celebrate a goal like that. But we're on to the next game."

Setting aside Hussein's difficulties in customs, Arnold, who guided Australia at the 2022 World Cup, said the team's experience leading up to Tuesday's match has been positive.

"FIFA, even the U.S., it's not about politics — it's about football," he said. "The way we've been treated has been first class."

Arnold said his team's effort Tuesday bodes well heading into Monday's match against France in Philadelphia.

"I was very proud of the first 65-70 minutes," Arnold said. "A couple of mistakes of players this type of level will always punish you. So we need to learn lessons from these mistakes."

For 66 minutes it looked like everything was going wrong for Kylian Mbappe. While France toiled in their Group I opener against Senegal, the forward's first touch was sloppy and he was denied what everyone apart from the officials thought was a penalty. Then Mbappe came alive, scoring two stunners to ensure lift-off for Didier Deschamps' title chasers.

Despite defeat, Senegal's impressive performance piled some pressure on Norway to win against unfancied Iraq in the group's later kick-off - which they duly did, courtesy of another impressive Erling Haaland performance as he bagged a brace on his tournament debut.

Argentina and Lionel Messi also began their defence of the title won four years ago in an entertaining contest versus Algeria. It was the first competitive match played between the nations and kicked off with two disallowed goals inside the opening 10 minutes. Messi then took centre stage and rattled home a stunning opener, a second half tap-in and a delightful third to boost his own World Cup tally and kick start Argentina's pursuit of another title in superb fashion.

Here is everything you from day six of the super-sized tournament:

Mbappe double follows first major VAR controversy

While Mbappe became France's all-time record goalscorer with his double in New Jersey, a decision not to award him a penalty when the match remained scoreless was questioned by many - including several referees themselves, according to the BBC's resident official Darren Cann.

Iranian-Australian referee Alireza Faghani initially gave a corner – and then changed his decision to a goal-kick after watching replays. Mbappe had dribbled into the box where Senegal's Sadio Mane slid in to make a tackle. As Mane reached Mbappe, the France captain touched the ball away from his opponent and then collapsed in a heap under Mane's challenge.

Referee Faghani was sent to review the decision on his pitchside monitor by his VAR, and as he stepped back on to the pitch, French players and coaching staff began to celebrate. But instead of awarding a penalty, Faghani announced: "The attacker initiated the contact."

Partey loses Canada visa appeal

Thomas Partey will miss Ghana's match against Panama after a Canadian court on Tuesday dismissed his appeal against being denied entry.

The 33-year-old had been refused a visa by the Canadian government last week, prompting his legal team to launch a last-minute challenge at the Federal Court in Ottawa.

The Black Stars play Panama in their Group L match in Toronto on Wednesday. In dismissing the appeal, judge Roger Lafreniere wrote that Partey sought "extraordinary, mandatory interlocutory relief" that would have required Canada to set aside a "lawfully rendered inadmissibility finding and facilitate his entry for a specific event."

Former Arsenal midfielder Partey denies seven charges of rape and one count of sexual assault, relating to allegations by four different women between 2020 and 2022, and is due to stand trial next year.

Injured Livramento replaced by Chalobah

Trevoh Chalobah has been called up to replace the injured Tino Livramento in England's World Cup squad.

Livramento's calf injury is an early blow for Thomas Tuchel's preparations for the tournament, coming just one day before the Three Lions' opener against Croatia in Dallas on Wednesday.

Tuchel was able to replace Newcastle full-back Livramento in the squad with a deadline of 9pm BST on Tuesday – 24 hours before England's first game of the tournament – and Chelsea defender Chalobah was on his way to the United States on Tuesday. Chalobah will not be involved against Croatia, but will be available for subsequent group matches against Ghana and Panama.

Haaland scores double on near-perfect World Cup debut

Having seen Mbappe run riot against Senegal, this generation's other star striker clearly thought 'anything you can do, I can do better'. Making his World Cup debut, Erling Haaland scored twice in the first half as Norway beat a spirited Iraqi side 4-1 to end the first matchday top of Group I.

The 25-year-old is already Norway's record goalscorer, now with 57 goals in 51 caps, and it looks like as well as duelling for top spot in Group I, he and Mbappe will be fighting for the tournament's Golden Boot.

He only had 11 touches in the first half - the fewest of any player on the pitch - but two of them were goals. The first was a tap-in from a Moller Wolfe cutback, with the second also coming at close range as the Manchester City striker closed down Iraq keeper Jalal Hassan, who dawdled on the ball after a poor backpass by Zaid Tahseen and paid the price.

He missed a second-half chance for a hat-trick, too, and was narrowly denied an assist as he headed the ball across goal for Kristian Thorstvedt to bundle home Norway's fourth on the night - but the strike was marked down as an Aymen Hussein home goal.

Magic Messi equals Klose's record

Algeria were warned. A dainty pass slipped into the right side of the penalty area by Lautaro Martinez played Lionel Messi in on goal and he routinely found the back of the net by beating Luca Zidane on his near side. The crowd inside the Kansas City Stadium erupted in cheers only for the celebrations to get cut short as the football legend was ruled offside.

It was a chance taken just five minutes into Argentina's World Cup opener and looked as though the 38-year-old had picked up exactly where he left off when winning the tournament four years ago. But it was not to be and Messi had to wait a further 12 minutes before making his mark on the 2026 edition of the World Cup.

Supplied by his close teammate Rodrigo de Paul, the little master spun towards goal before drawing a stunning effort from left-to-right, through the hands of Zidane and into the top, right corner with the pinpoint accuracy of his heydays. It is the type of goal that reminds the World Cup hopefuls that Messi may be heading into the twilight of his career but he retains all the prowess and skill of his younger self and, perhaps most importantly, the desire to achieve wonders on the biggest stage of all.

A second goal of the game caame from a fortuitous tap-in before a slick move late in the second half set him up for a driving finish that takes him to 16 goals across his six World Cup tournaments. That puts him level with record holder Miroslav Klose who he will surely surpass before this tournament is done.

Leo Messi fired Argentina into the lead against Algeria and sent a reminder that he wants to regain the World Cup (AP)

Austria deny Jordan debut point

An own goal and a late Marko Arnautovic penalty denied Jordan a dream debut point as they fell short to Austria in their World Cup opener.

Romano Schmidt had given Austria the lead in the first half but that was cancelled out by Ali Olwan, who expertly bent home to score Jordan's first ever goal at a World Cup finals.

But there was heartbreak to come for the debutants, with Yazan Al Arab putting into his own net with 14 minutes to play to give Austria a lifeline, before Arnautovic converted from the spot with the last kick of the game to seal the win.

Football fans in Texas for the World Cup have been embracing American gun culture, flocking to a Dallas shooting range for an experience "we don't get in England".

The DFW Gun Range and Academy in Dallas has hosted a "little conga line of multi-cultures", with various teams' fans visiting since the World Cup started.

Staff member Carlos Castaneda reported that visitor numbers have "kicked up" notably in the past two days, coinciding with the arrival of Three Lions supporters.

Matthew Connell, 28, from Preston, said that the shooting range was "packed with fellow England fans".

"It's been hot, it's been very hot," he said.

"It's full of English fans here. You can tell everyone's just come down here to try it out because it's something we don't get in England and it's really good."

He said that the size of Dallas and the surrounding areas hosting the World Cup meant supporters had spread out across the region rather than gathering in one location.

"There's so much to do and it's so spread out here and Dallas is such a massive place – everyone's just all over the place," he said.

"In other tournaments people might be all together but not here."

Mr Connell said the trip had highlighted cultural differences between the United States and England.

He said: "Even though you look at America and think it's quite similar to England, it is a massive change in culture.

"The size of the cars being one thing, the big SUVs they drive.

"And the whole gun culture – like here, the way they all talk about it, it's just so normal for them and it's like, wow."

An England fan sits outside the DFW Gun Range and Academy in Dallas (PA)

Commenting on his experience at the range, Mr Connell said: "You quickly realise that it's a lot different to the video games, all the little intricacies with it, but yeah, it's really good – I'd recommend it to anyone over here."

Asked whether he would like similar access to firearms in Britain, he replied: "No, I think we're good without them."

Mr Castaneda said the World Cup had brought in an influx of overseas visitors.

"The last few days have been hectic – the Netherlands, the Japanese and now the British," he said.

"It's fun – it's like a little conga line of multi-cultures.

"It feels like we're hosting a very, very big get together."

Mr Castaneda said almost all of the foreign visitors had told staff they were in Texas for the World Cup.

DFW Gun Range Academy staff member Carlos Castaneda (PA)

Speaking about how many England fans he had seen, he continued: "The last two days have kicked up.

"Saturday and Sunday there was a lot of Dutch and a lot of Japanese, then into Monday we started seeing a lot more British.

"But today it's been nothing but British."

Mr Castaneda would not be drawn on how well Three Lions fans had fared at the shooting range, saying: "There's no comparison, everyone starts somewhere, there's no judgment."

He added: "But in terms of personality, as customers you guys have been nothing but phenomenal.

"Very, very personable people, very enjoyable – a lot of questions, a lot of answers, very informative also."

Mr Castaneda explained that people from all over the world viewed the shooting range with "different perspectives".

He said: "They come here and it's kind of like a hobby almost, a recreation.

"It's no different for us than going to Topgolf, or going to a driving range or doing other kinds of recreational sport.

"But yeah, different people, different lives."

- Kourtney Kardashian had a miscarriage a few years ago.

- The reveal came in her husband Travis Barker's new documentary.

- The couple later welcomed a son together named Rocky.

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker are opening up about a devastating time early in their relationship.

In the new documentary *Travis Barker: Love Is Louder Than Fear*, the couple revealed that, before their son, Rocky, was born in 2023, Kardashian got pregnant six months into their relationship, then had a miscarriage.

“When we lost the baby, we were devastated,” Kardashian said in the doc, which premiered on June 13 at the Tribeca Film Festival. “We cried for days.”

Kardashian and Barker were expecting a daughter, who they were planning to name Tulip. But when they went in for the three-month checkup, they learned that their baby no longer had a heartbeat.

The couple went public with their relationship in early 2021 and were officially married in May 2022. The following summer, Kardashian announced her pregnancy with a "Travis I'm pregnant" sign at the Los Angeles concert of his band, Blink-182. Their son Rocky was born in November 2023.

In addition to Rocky, Kardashian and Barker each have three children from previous relationships.

- Tom Holland is thinking ahead to the next generation of Marvel heroes.

- The MCU star recently shared that he would be happy to "mentor" the next onscreen Spider-Man, just as Robert Downey Jr. did for him.

- Holland even had a name in mind when asked which young actor would make a worthy successor.

Tom Holland is very invested in the future of Spider-Man, whether he's in front of the camera or not.

Weeks away from the release of *Spider-Man: Brand New Day* — his seventh outing as the titular character and fourth standalone movie — Holland is already thinking about the far away future. While the British actor has said that he hopes to play Peter Parker in a few more superhero entries, he also knows the day will come when his tenure as the web-slinger will end. At which point, Holland has insisted he would love to stay involved.

"In the way that Robert Downey [Jr.] was such a mentor for me in my first three movies, I would love to be that person for whoever is next," Holland told *Esquire* in an interview published Tuesday.

Asked if he has any suggestions for who might make a good successor, the actor revealed that he does in fact have a name in mind.

"Owen Cooper would be awesome," Holland answered, referencing the 16-year-old Brit who is hot off of a huge year after his breakout role in *Adolescence*.

Holland added, "Obviously he’s super-talented and the talk of the town right now."

Cooper made his onscreen acting debut in the Netflix series, making such an impression on audiences that he soon became the youngest male actor to win an Emmy, scoring Best Actor in a Limited or Anthology series at 15. Cooper also scored at the BAFTAs, the Golden Globes, and the SAG Awards. He later played a Young Heathcliff in *Wuthering Heights *and is next set to appear in *Cry to Heaven*, Tom Ford's adaptation of the 1982 Anne Rice novel.

The high praise from Holland marks an especially full-circle moment for the young actor, who told I-D in April 2025 that he was inspired to pursue acting after watching Holland in his live action film debut,* The Impossible*.

In the same interview, Cooper confessed, "I want to play Spider-Man."

As the awards campaign around *Adolescence *peaked, his Spider-Man comment took on a life of its own, including rumors that Cooper was in talks to fulfill the dream role. Before long, the young actor was fending off questions about the Marvel hero in interviews.

"I’ve genuinely got no idea where that came from," Cooper said of the rumors in an August 2025 interview with *Variety*. "Perhaps I said it on my very first interview, but I can’t remember."

He added, "I’d like to do it, but not for a good long time, like 10-15 years. But that’s only when Tom Holland backs off."

Whoever steps into the role after Holland, the actor has made it clear that he'd like to help them find their footing when that next chapter of the franchise kicks off.

"For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter," he told *Empire* earlier this month. Whatever that looks like, I don’t know. But if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset."

Jennifer Garner says she and Chloë Sevigny "have circled each other forever."

It makes sense. Both actresses came up in the 1990s and have many high-profile projects on their respective list of credits. But, yet, they weren't afforded the chance to work with each other until *The Five Star Weekend*, Peacock's upcoming adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand's best-selling novel *The Five-Star Weekend*.

In fact, none of the actresses at the center of the new series — also starring Gemma Chan, Regina Hall, and D'Arcy Carden — had ever even met, much less worked together before filming last summer in Los Angeles and Nantucket, supported by a female showrunner and writer, female directors, and an all-female team of producers.

"Women are typically siloed off: You play you, and then maybe you have a best friend or a boss or an assistant, but it's rarely about a sisterhood," Garner, an executive producer on the series herself, tells **.

That said, costarring with such powerhouses, "I was nervous to meet all of them, because I'm a fan of all their work," says the actress, who adds that each woman ended up challenging her preconceptions of them in one way or another.

"Chloë is so cool-girl New York City and I'm so suburban mom, but actually, she's pretty suburban [too]," says Garner. "I was surprised by how maternal she is. D'Arcy is so, so emotional, such a connector. She's the person who is always making sure that we have taken a picture. Gemma, I was surprised that she's a lawyer." (Chan holds a law degree from the University of Oxford.) "I was also surprised when we had our dance scene. Gemma could really get down." As for Hall, "Regina has a real business mindset, and she's a real entrepreneur. And she's so smart. Regina's the whole package. All of us wanted time with Regina."

Jennifer Garner says she wants to have a 'physical fight' with Judy Greer: 'I'd like to wipe the floor with her'

Over the four-month shoot — three months in L.A., then a few weeks on Nantucket — Sevigny says Garner did a lot to make sure the cast felt comfortable getting vulnerable.

"She really set the tone and was very open," Sevigny notes. "We just started talking about very deep things from the get-go. And being a set of mostly women… everybody was very honest about things going on in their lives, and their past, and their struggles. It created a bond very quickly."

That bond helped the cast navigate the vacillations in tone that the new series required. Their stories, after all, grapple with losing your husband, your job, your health, your connection to your kids, your sense of self — things that aren't easily solved by shots of tequila and a ’90s dance party.

Sevigny, 51, loves that Hollywood is embracing a story like *Five Star Weekend*.

"There isn't much of a stigma, I think, around aging. Women in midlife are on the catwalks and campaigns," she says. "It feels very exciting now that that's happening." The actress notes the progress in the kinds of roles she's seeing now: "In general, there are more interesting parts for women — richer female characters, more complicated female characters. There's an appetite for it, and an allowance for it."

Midlife "is such an interesting age, because there's so much happening," adds Carden, 46. "In the same friend group, you could have somebody whose kid is going to college and somebody who's pregnant, and somebody who is in their second marriage and somebody who's divorced. The stories are endless."

"There is an audience who wants to see this, who likes this content. As an actress, it's obviously wonderful," says Hall, 55. "I feel really grateful to work, period. And to still be not limited by age."

*Five Star Weekend* series creator and showrunner Bekah Brunstetter, 43, attributes the increased interest in shows centered on women in their 40s and 50s to more awareness of this era of life in general.

"To get really granular about it, perimenopause wasn't a word until like five years ago," she says with a laugh. "We're thinking about [midlife] women instead of discarding them."
