Friends stars Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer and Lisa Kudrow shared tributes, calling Burrows a mentor, icon, and paternal figure in their lives

"His warmth, humility and generosity made us feel safe, like family, and I'm sure we weren't the only cast to feel that way," Schwimmer wrote

Matt LeBlanc and his Friends costars are paying tribute to their late collaborator, James Burrows.

Burrows' family confirmed his death at the age of 85 to PEOPLE on Friday, June 19. The prolific TV director was known for his work on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Will & Grace, Taxi, Frasier, 3rd Rock from the Sunand Friends.

LeBlanc, 58, shared a rare Instagram post paying tribute to the director on Friday, June 19. "Jimmy, words cannot describe the impact and influence you had on us and everyone who was lucky enough to have known you," LeBlanc wrote.

"You sir are a true icon on so many levels. Well wishes in your next act," he continued, before concluding, "You will be missed. God Bless."

The Friends star shared a selfie of himself and Burrows smiling together in a stadium. He also included a photo of himself and David Schwimmer smiling widely as they hugged Burrows, who wore a goofier expression. The photo was taken in 2016 for the NBC special Must See TV: An All-Star Tribute to James Burrows.

Schwimmer posted the same photo to his Instagram and penned a heartfelt message to the director he considered "another Father figure."

"Jimmy Burrows brought out the best in every actor he ever worked with, and elevated every show he directed, making it funnier and more moving than anyone expected," he wrote. "His warmth, humility and generosity made us feel safe, like family, and I'm sure we weren't the only cast to feel that way. He looked out for us, on camera and off."

Schwimmer, 59, continued by recalling Burrows's "paternal" nature. "Loving, wise, encouraging, challenging, instructive, patient, inspiring, playful—and on my best days, I'd like to think, even proud," he wrote."Thousands of writers, actors, producers, crew members and network execs are forever blessed to have been on a sound stage with him, watching him work and learning from his incomparable talent," he wrote, before concluding, "Jimmy, I miss you already and I'm forever grateful to you. Thank you for being such a wonderful director, mentor and friend."

At the time of the Friends pilot, Burrows, who already had a storied career behind him, knew he needed to direct the show.

"I had a good sense about Friends and knew two things immediately: one, I didn't have time to direct it, and two, I had to direct it. It became the last pilot shot that year," he wrote in his 2022 memoir, Directed by James Burrows. "I fell in love with these six kids on the page immediately. Ninety-five percent of the original pilot script made it to air."

"I knew the show had a chance to really take off and told the kids, 'This is your last shot at anonymity. Once the show airs, you guys will never be able to go anywhere without being hounded.' None of them believed me," he wrote in his memoir.

Burrows directed 15 episodes of Friends, including "The One with the Blackout," which earned him another Emmy nod. During his career, Burrows earned 11 Emmys, was nominated 48 times, and directed over 1,000 TV episodes.

SEATTLE (AP) — Boston Red Sox pitcher Ranger Suarez lost his no-hit bid against the Seattle Mariners when Josh Naylor doubled with one out in the seventh inning Friday night.

The 30-year-old lefty issued a leadoff walk in the seventh to Cal Raleigh before Julio Rodríguez flied out. Naylor then lined a double up the right-center alley for Seattle's first hit.

Boston led 5-0 after scoring four runs in the top of the seventh.

Suarez retired the first 10 batters he faced before walking Raleigh in the fourth. Suarez followed by striking out Rodríguez and getting Naylor to line out to second base.

Suarez is in his first season with Boston after spending his first eight with Philadelphia. He went 12-8 in each of his last two seasons with the Phillies.

The United States are through to the last 32 of the World Cup after they eased to a comfortable 2-0 win over Australia in Seattle.

An own goal by Australia's Cameron Burgess after 11 minutes set the co-hosts on their way and Alex Freeman headed home a second before half-time for Maurico Pochettino's team, who now need just a point from their final match to ensure they top Group D.

Both sides had won their opening matches, but it was the US who looked the team best equipped to go deep into the tournament, riding the wave of good feeling from their 4-1 thumping of Paraguay to easily dispatch Antipodean opponents who offered little.

The manner in which Tony Popovic's team went behind was unfortunate. Folarin Balogun, fresh from his two goals in Los Angeles on Saturday, ran the ball to the byline and cut it back into the six-yard box for Burgess, in an attempt to clear, to fire past his helpless goalkeeper Patrick Beach.

An early own goal opened the scoring for the USA (Reuters)

Beach had been their star in their 2-0 win over Turkey, but he could do nothing about the United States' second goal.

Australia failed properly to clear a free-kick and the ball fell to Sergino Dest, whose attempt from the edge of the box ballooned up in the air for Freeman to head home after Beach had committed to the initial shot.

Should Turkey fail to beat Paraguay in the early hours of Saturday, the co-hosts will top the group regardless of their result in their final match, while Australia require a point against Paraguay to keep their fate in their own hands.

Pochettino told BBC One: "I think it was a fantastic game again, very good first half. I think we dominated the game against a very tough team.

Mauricio Pochettino has led the US to the knockouts (Reuters)

"I was saying yesterday Argentina have amazing fans, but I think we are matching Argentina. Our fans, I'm so happy for them."

Australia coach Tony Popovic added: "I don't know if it was the occasion but we looked sluggish and heavy-legged. They were quicker and more powerful.

"They won every duel and every second ball. When they do that it makes it difficult to gain any momentum."

CHICAGO (AP) — Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama surprised the first 100 visitors to walk through the doors of the new Obama Presidential Center, personally greeting them Friday.

The Obamas, joined by former "Reading Rainbow" host LeVar Burton, also read "Where the Wild Things Are" to 25 school children at the Chicago Public Library branch inside the center. When the former president read Maurice Sendak's line about being "king of all the wild things," Michelle Obama interjected with, "Although there were no kings," to applause.

Later, awed guests shook hands with the Obamas against the backdrop of a colorful, 38-foot-tall painting depicting a map of Chicago stretching to the ceiling, inspired by Carl Sandburg's 1914 poem about the city: "stormy, husky, brawling, City of the Big Shoulders."

"It was perfect. It was great," said 18-year-old Houefa Agassounon from Chicago after the surprise visit from the Obamas. "I was literally crying. I asked for a hug and everything."

She wrote a letter to the Obama Foundation last year, asking if she could be there when it opened. She said meeting the Obamas was a bonus.

"This is just the greatest thing of my 18 years of life," she said.

The Juneteenth opening followed a star-studded dedication ceremony where the Obamas gave rousing speeches to an audience including three former presidents, their former first ladies, and a host of politicians, A-list celebrities, musicians, athletes and others. Thousands more joined the livestream from a nearby park.

A weekend of events is planned for the sprawling campus on Chicago's South Side near where the Obamas lived and began his political career. It is adjacent to the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry in the lakefront park, and not far from the University of Chicago.

Tickets for the general public are sold out through the end of November. But those lucky enough to score them for the first day got the unexpected thrill of meeting the Obamas themselves.

The campus includes a towering museum that covers the political and personal realms of the nation's first Black president and first lady, while public spaces include a branch of the Chicago Public Library, a playground and athletic center, basketball courts and a picnic area with grills.

The tower's design is meant to depict four hands coming together in solidarity. Wrapped around one side are 5-foot tall concrete capital letters, an excerpt of Obama's 2015 speech commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Selma-to-Montgomery march. It begins, "You are America."

The bassist recently suffered a stroke

"There's never been anybody like Justin," wrote the band's lead singer Leigh Nash in a tribute on Instagram

Justin Cary, longtime bassist in Sixpence None the Richer, has died. He was 50.

Cary died on Thursday, June 18 after recently suffering a stroke, according to Sixpence None the Richer's lead singer Leigh Nash and a GoFundMe set up to support the bassist and his wife, Linda.

"Justin passed peacefully this morning and Linda was next to him," read a statement posted to the GoFundMe. "Please continue to pray and give strength during this very difficult time."

Per the fundraiser page, Cary "suffered a serious stroke" last week and was receiving care at Albany Medical Center in New York. "He has had two surgeries and is in the ICU," read a statement on the page earlier this week.

On Wednesday, June 17, another statement was shared to the GoFundMe noting that Cary was "in the ICU and on a respirator."

"Linda is right next to his bed reading to him and hopeful he hears her. She is also telling him how much he is loved," continued the note.

Earlier this week, Nash, 49, directed fans to the GoFundMe as she spoke about Cary on Instagram. "We love our brother so so much. Words don't cover it. I know so many out there love him too," she wrote.

Nash continued, "Saw his brilliance, second to NONE professionalism, class, humor (oh my lord the humor) wit, tough as an old boot as they say. Many more adjectives to describe him. Please pray for Justin and Linda."

Following his death, Nash shared another post in tribute to the bassist. "'We sure had a great time' is an understatement. Thank you, Justin," she began.

"We love you forever. Please keep his dear Linda close to your hearts. She is our family," continued Nash. "There's never been anybody like Justin."

Sixpence None the Richer was formed in 1992, and Cary joined the band in 1997 — the same year the group's self-titled album was released featuring the hit song "Kiss Me," which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In 2000, "Kiss Me" was nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the Grammy Awards.

Beyond Cary's work in the band, according to his website, he's played bass with acts including Counting Crows, Jennifer Knapp and Lee Brice.
