After cementing her legacy as a legendary comedian with a record-breaking show that will polish the lede to her future obituary, Deborah Vance is ready for her next applause.
"Hacks" fifth and final season concluded on Thursday, May 26, revealing what's in store for Jean Smart's Deborah Vance and Hannah Einbinder's Ava Daniels in a series finale that left fans shedding tears of sadness, joy and laughter.
The finale opens with an unspecified time jump from Episode 9, when Vance made history as the first comedian to perform at New York's Central Park to a crowd of over 30,000. Upon achieving a new career peak, she was ready to retire from the comedy space with her head held high.
Over lunch, overlooking the Fountains of Bellagio in Las Vegas, Deborah tells Ava that she has cancer, is refusing chemotherapy treatment and plans to be legally euthanized after their planned vacation. A distraught Ava tries to talk her out of it and refuses to participate in Deborah's "suicide mission."
Despite her reluctance, Ava decides to show up for her best friend, and the two embark on an extravagant European trip that involves driving stick shift in the streets of Paris, high-end dining, shopping and clubbing until dawn. By the end of their adventure, Ava begs Deborah to reconsider her decision in a heartfelt plea, but she declines.
What's next for Deborah Vance?
"The worst part about dying is I can't even enjoy being bone thin," Deborah rushes to tell Ava, a punchline to the joke that ultimately saves her life.

The pair had bounced different versions of the joke off each other, and the final version was simply too good for Deborah not to perform onstage.
"I may not have 30 years, but I think I have another hour," she tells Ava as she commits to living long enough to at least write and perform a new comedy special.
Ava agrees to help her write it without any hesitation, and the two share a tear-jerking hug at the train station.

What's next for Ava Daniels?
Aside from helping Deborah write her new comedy special, Ava also finishes shooting the pilot for her reboot of "Who's Making Dinner?," which was ordered for a full season.
Deborah initially starred on the original 1970s version of the sitcom alongside her late ex-husband Frank Vance.
Ava first pitched a reboot following a group of young adults who could decide to live together; however, the network passed on the idea. She later pitched a script that would follow two women from different generations who learn from each other, inspired by her dynamic with Deborah.
What's next for Jimmy LuSaque Jr. and Kayla Schaeffer?
Jimmy LuSaque Jr. (Paul W. Downs) and Kayla Schaeffer (Meg Stalter) are together until the very end as they head the Latitute talent agency.
Christopher McDonald, Megan Stalter, Paul W. Downs and Robby Hoffman in "Hacks" Season 5 Episode 9.
The two were forced to close their Schaeffer & LuSaque agency after their startup firm failed to operate on their own commissions and after Kayla's father, Latitute CEO Michael Schaeffer (W. Earl Brown), started litigation against them. Kayla and Randi (Robby Hoffman) are given solid positions at the giant firm, while Jimmy is sent to work in the mailroom as retaliation for their tense history.
However, Jimmy discovers that Michael was secretly selling the voice and likeness of clients to AI companies without their consent and uses that revelation to blackmail him into stepping down. Michael grudgingly agrees to hand over the agency to Jimmy and Kayla, prompting many staff members to immediately quit during a keynote presentation.
Jimmy gives an inspirational speech about agents reigniting their passion to support the talent they represent and inspires their remaining staff. He returns to his office, where he worked in Season 1, and Kayla decides to ditch the massive corner office to work in her old desk by Jimmy's side.
How does 'Hacks' end?
The final moments of "Hacks" show Ava and Deborah spitballing jokes in Paris for the new special. Director Lucia Aniello then transitions to a shot of the city's Eiffel Tower, to the Paris hotel in Las Vegas, where the pair walk on the strip.
The episode concludes with an aerial long of the iconic Bellagio Fountains and a loud standing ovation is heard offscreen.
"Hacks" premiered in 2021 and was co-created by Downs, Aniello and Jen Statsky. The show has maintained an acclaimed five seasons and won 12 Emmys, including best comedy series in 2024, best supporting actress for Einbinder in 2025, and four wins in the best lead actress category for Smart.
