War isn't the only thing in the *Outlander* universe that can deliver a gruesome death. It turns out, picking berries on the ridge is just as dangerous.

It started out as a seemingly ordinary day. The women are gathering in the woods, and Amy (Joanne Thomson) is gushing over her newlywed status to Mr. Lindsay, who loves her as much as her two sons. Amy is definitely a tertiary character, and I imagine most of us do not possess an emotional connection with her storyline. But it's clear she's adored by Rachel (Izzy Meikle-Small), Lizzie (Caitlin O'Ryan), and Bree (Sophie Skelton), so we laugh along with the frontier women traipsing through the forest carrying on like besties.

Basking in the lightheartedness of the moment, it's quite unexpected to witness a huge black bear clock in on Amy, sitting charmingly on a mossy log, and pile drive her to the ground before eating half her face. Ten points to Gryffindor for Bree shooting and subsequently scaring the bear away.

At the same time in the same woods, Jamie (Sam Heughan) confides in Roger (Richard Rankin), sharing that, according to Frank's book, a battle is coming to the back country, and the patriots win. Jamie mentions that he allegedly fights alongside men named Sevier, Cleveland, and Shelby. Roger admits he hasn't heard of these men and wonders if Frank's research featured another man named James Fraser.

Captain Charles Cunningham (Kieran Bew) meanders up to Jamie and Roger, and it's discovered that Cunningham is a Freemason. As they discuss opening a lodge on the ridge to hold organized meetings, the three scramble when they hear several gunshots.

Suddenly, Jamie busts through the house to Claire's (Caitriona Balfe) surgical room and gently places Amy on the table. After a quick assessment of Amy's injuries, Claire makes somber eye contact with Jamie. There's nothing she can do to save the woman.

Amy's husband bursts through the door and, to Bree's horror, ushers Amy's two sons into the surgical room. No child should see their mother in that state. Sadly, everyone understands the gravity of these last precious seconds, and Amy's husband swears to his dying wife that he will keep her boys safe. Roger prays, and Amy takes her last breath.

Naturally, the next order of business is to hunt down the bear and end it. Jamie wants the oldest boy to join them to avenge his mother. He even gives him a tip that you shoot a bear in the shoulder to wound him, before you take the kill shot. This kid can't be more than 10 years old, yet here we are handing him a rifle. I would have never survived living in the olden days.

Our fearless hunting party hears another gunshot, and all eyes land on Captain Cunningham standing over a bear carcass. Cunningham assumed there were enough people helping Amy that he immediately tracked the bear after hearing Bree's gunshot. Calling the bear a "formidable foe," he's sad to hear that Amy didn't make it, and relieved to tell her son that his mother has been avenged.

Back at the house, Mrs. Cunningham (Frances Tomelty) waltzes into the surgery room with Amy's shroud and begins helping Claire prep for the burial. Claire was initially surprised that this busybody had assumed the role of her official helper without an invitation. Then Claire questioned why Amy already had a shroud made since she was so young. Mrs. Cunningham deadpans that she's so old that she should start sleeping in hers. Then she bustles away to get some hot water.

Is Mrs. Cunningham funny? Do we like her? What do we think about her Christian name — was this the first time you ever heard the name Elspeth?

As Claire and Elspeth figure out how to best stitch up Amy's face, there's a wedding celebration in Philadelphia. Mercy (Gloria Obianyo) and Henry (Harry Jarvis) are married! And William (Charles Vandervaart) chooses this glorious occasion to share the news that Henry's brother Benjamin has passed away. P.S.: He has a wife and a kid.

I'm not sure how Henry's honeymoon will go after that bombshell, but William promises to find out what happened and report back. William rides to the camp where Benjamin died in custody, and it is confirmed by the captain that there was an outbreak of jail fever. There are no other details beyond a poorly marked grave.

After promising a mound of dirt that he will tell Benjamin's son of his bravery, William asks for Benjamin's belongings. When the man tells William that he is sorry to hear that Benjamin died after his condition had improved so much, William's spidey senses start to tingle. According to this man, Benjamin passed away overnight and was already buried by morning.

William checks the red coat pocket to see if Benjamin's little army man trinket, a good luck charm he kept with him always, is safely tucked away. Nothing. The next thing we know, William is sneaking off in the dead of night to dig up his cousin's grave. And he finds another man staring back at him from the hole.

William has a project. This is exactly what he needs to figuratively crawl out of his own hole. I just hope he finds Benjamin alive. Otherwise, we are right back where we started with Jane's death on his conscience.

Back on the ridge, no one has time to mourn Amy's death, because it's all hands on deck for the birth of Rachel and Young Ian's (John Bell) bouncing baby boy! Ian desperately presses a pelt into Claire's hands and asks that she wrap the child in the furry blanket when he arrives. She scoffs and tells Ian that he will do that himself.

Please, please, please tell me that pelt was not Rollo.

The next day, a man by the name of Benjamin Cleveland (Turlough Convery) finds Jamie in the woodshed. Jamie pauses when he hears the same name that Frank mentioned in his book. Cleveland informs Jamie that he is raising a militia to protect the families and properties on the mountain. He also admits, without remorse, that he is the one who strung up three men in a tree as retaliation for being a Tory.

Cleveland is quick to report that Jamie has a Tory living on his land: Captain Cunningham. Jamie is quick to retort that he turned down George Washington himself. He will not be joining the militia, and he will handle Captain Cunningham.

So Jamie is the James Fraser in Frank's book. And apparently, Captain Cunningham may be a danger, but who's to know for sure? Jamie tells Roger and Claire of the exchange, and Roger asks if he is in the book. Jamie says he doesn't recognize any names in the book, which is weird because he couldn't imagine not fighting with his men.

Claire is frustrated. She lived with Frank for 20 years, and he never mentioned the research. In fact, he made her promise not to look for Jamie as a condition for taking her back and helping raise Bree. All the while, he was searching for Jamie himself.

Jamie calls a spade a spade. Maybe he was searching for Jamie to see if he could find Claire.

The boys head to the lodge to see what they can find out about Cunningham. It's convenient when Cunningham stands up to share with the brotherhood that he lost his son at Saratoga. He felt him die, but then saw the light re-enter his eyes as he told his father he would see him again in seven years. Cunningham shouts to the entire congregation that the soul is not destroyed by death. And that he himself will not taste death before that day. So he will use his time wisely and answer God's call.

So the question remains: What does Cunningham think God has called him to do? And how do you interact with a man who thinks he can't die?
