Paul Feig is excited to welcome Kirsten Dunst into the universe of The Housemaid.

"I mean, she's amazing," the director, 63, tells PEOPLE at the Saturday, March 28 Human Rights Campaign Los Angeles Dinner. Dunst, 43, will join Sydney Sweeney in The Housemaid's Secret, the planned sequel to the hit thriller that's now hitting theaters on Dec. 17, 2027.

"I've always been a fan of Kirsten," says Feig. "You know, no spoilers, but she hits the part very well."

The Oscar-nominated actress will play Wendy in the sequel, based on the 2023 installment of Freida McFadden's bestselling novel series. Returning after their December 2025 hit are Feig as director, Rebecca Sonnenshine as screenwriter, and Sweeney, Feig and McFadden among the producing team.

Why is Dunst so suited to her part in The Housemaid's Secret? "Because she'll be very unexpected in this role," Feig teases mysteriously to PEOPLE.

Lionsgate announced in December that production on The Housemaid's Secret will begin in 2026. As multiple outlets have reported, the sequel's release date will be Dec. 17, 2027 — almost two years exactly after the release of The Housemaid.

To celebrate Dunst's casting, Feig took to X (formerly Twitter), commenting on a post from The Housemaid's official account featuring a quote — "I would prefer if you refer to me as Mrs. Garrick." — related to her character. "So excited to welcome Kirsten Dunst to the Housemaid family!" wrote the Bridesmaids director.

"It is a privilege to bring The Housemaid's next chapter to the screen with Kirsten Dunst," said Erin Westerman, president of distributor Lionsgate, in a March 23 statement. "She is an icon. Her career reflects extraordinary range and fearlessness. Opposite the ever-magnetic Sydney Sweeney, she will be an electrifying force in a world where nothing is ever quite as it seems."

McFadden followed up her hit 2022 book with The Housemaid's Secret in 2023 and a third installment, The Housemaid Is Watching, in 2024. Speaking to Variety in January, the original film's star Amanda Seyfried expressed an interest in returning for at least a cameo in a future Housemaid sequel despite McFadden's series veering away from her character Nina Winchester. "I almost guarantee that I'm gonna be some small cameo in it," the actress said. "I will jump the f--- back into that."

Feig, speaking to PEOPLE at the HRC fundraising gala dinner, praised the LGBTQ+ org. "I'm a huge fan of what they do," said the filmmaker, vowing "anything I can do to support."

The Housemaid's Secret is in theaters Dec. 17, 2027, the same day as Avengers: Secret Wars and Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
