It's been over a decade since an offhanded remark by Steve Carell sent Ryan Gosling spiraling into existential crisis on the set of *The Big Short*, but the trauma is still raw.
The *Project Hail Mary* actor stopped by *Late Night With Seth Meyers* on Wednesday to talk about his new movie, when Meyers pulled up a photo of his character, a school teacher who awakens from a 13-year coma aboard a spaceship and, as such, has long hair and a full beard.

"Oh my god," reacted Gosling, seemingly triggered. "I call him the space caveman… you know, I don't do this a lot. I have a little bit of trauma because I went for it a bit on this film, *The Big Short*."
In the 2015 comedic drama, Gosling's character was a banker embroiled in the 2000s housing bubble, and the Oscar-nominated actor wanted to truly transform for the role, taking his hair from dirty blonde to brunette.
"And I stepped out in my wig and costume and I ran into Steve Carell, who was the first person I saw," Gosling recalled to Meyers. "He just starred at me and was like, 'Never do this again.'"

And until *Project Hail Mary*, he didn't.
Furthermore, "I never spoke to him again," joked Gosling of Carell, also his co-star previously in 2011's *Crazy, Stupid Love* with Emma Stone and Julianne Moore.
Gosling first spoke up about the trauma caused by Carell back in 2015, during the promotion of *The Big Short*.
In a joint interview with ABC News, he recalled the moment he stepped on the set, in character and exuding confidence. "Putting on the wig… I felt like, 'Oh I got this,'" Gosling told *Nightline*'s Chris Connelly. "And then I walked out of the trailer and I saw Steve."
"Such a horror show," Carell reminisced, laughing. "He's such a good-looking human being, and it — he could not have looked creepier."
