Chad Michael Murray promises that Sullivan's Crossing will carry on following the departure of costar Scott Patterson.
"It's one of those situations where you go, 'OK, well, just look at the show," Murray told Yahoo Canada for a story published Sunday. "What is the show? Where does it sit? And how do you hold it up and keep it true to itself?' And that's all on the text and the storytelling. There's no question in my mind that we did that. The show stays totally true to itself."
Sullivan's Crossing follows neurosurgeon Maggie Sullivan, who's played by Morgan Kohan, as she goes back to her Canadian hometown following legal trouble. Maggie tries to reconcile with her father, portrayed by Patterson. Murray's Cal Jones is her love interest.
Earlier this month, showrunner Roma Roth confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that Patterson's character would not physically be part of the series' upcoming fourth season. She cited his character, Harry "Sully" Sullivan, had gone to Ireland at the end of the third season, and she suggested that he could possibly return.
Patterson himself had then posted on Facebook that "the creative differences were becoming untenable and I just sadly realized that the show was not something that I could agree to continue. Every actor knows what it's like to fall in love with a character and a story. I fell in love with Sully and have nothing but fondness for him."
He continued, "It's unfortunate that it is now being implied that they moved on from me/Sully when the fact is the complete opposite, and those who sadly already have spoken out are also fully aware of this fact, and yet chose to say otherwise."

Murray, a veteran of TV shows such as Dawson's Creek, One Tree Hill, Gilmore Girls, and Riverdale, seemed unfazed by the change.

The Freaky Friday actor assured fans that Patterson's character will "still be a big part" of the upcoming batch of episodes.
"He still exists in this world, and there's still that relationship," Murray said. "And he built the Crossing, so it's always going to be there, and that's kind of the foundation that the show is built on."
Sullivan's Crossing premieres April 20 on the CW.
